    This page intentionally left blank VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL ORDERS All societies must deal with the possibility of violence, and they do so in different ways. This book integrates the problem of violence into a larger social science and historical framework, showing how economic and political behavior are closely linked. Most societies, which we call natural states, limit violence by political manipulation of the economy to create privileged interests. These privileges limit the use of violence by powerful individuals, but doing so hinders both economic and political development. In contrast, modern societies create open access to economic and political organizations, fostering political and economic competition. The book provides a framework for understanding the two types of social orders, why open access societies are both politically and economically more developed, and how some twenty- five countries have made the transition between the two types. Douglass C. North is co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sci- ence. He is the Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as director of the Center for Political Economy from 1984 to 1990, and is the Bartlett Burnap Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research for twenty years, Professor North received the John R. Commons Award in 1992. The author of ten books, including Institutions, Institutional Change, and Economic Performance (Cambridge University Press, 1990) and Understanding the Process of Economic Change (2005), Professor North has research interests in property rights, economic organization in history, and the formation of political and economic institutions and their consequences through time.

No, these aren’t insects—these are the Future Farmers of America. “ Education’s Treasures, .•IN' Discover Yours’’ was the theme of this year’s state con­ vention which began May 8. Sunday morning’s session of the 900 FFA represen­ tatives from throughout California included an address I by the frrst female national FFA president, Jan Eberly. Eberly, 20, from Fallbrook, Calif, said she felt a certain warmth in returning to her home state of California. “ I have traveled all over the United States and halfway around the world, but 1 always love returning to the blue and golden state of California,’’ said Eberly, referring to the FFA association’s colors. Cal Poly President Warren Baker welcomied the FFA delegates to Cal Poly by crediting them with immense contributions to agriculture... “ It is a pleasure to have you here,’’ said Baker. “ I hope you en joy your v is it to our classroom s and la b ora tories." Keynote speaker at this year’s convention was Jim Kem from Jelm, Wyoming. Kem gave a humorous talk in which he discussed the realities of life. Rather than simply assuming these spaces to be the opposite of the modern city, my project rejects the empty term space and instead examines topographies, literally meaning the writing of place. Less an examination of passive settings, the study of topography in modernism explores the action of creating spaces—either real or fictional which intersect with a variety of cultural, social, historical, and often political reverberations. The combination of charged elements coalesce and form a strong visual, corporeal, and sensory-filled topography that becomes integral to understanding not only the text and its importance beyond literary studies. My study pairs four modernists—two writing in German and two in English: Joseph Conrad and Anna Seghers and James Joyce and Uwe Johnson. All writers, having experienced displacement through exile, used topographies in their narratives to illustrate not only their understanding of history and humanity, but they also wrote narratives which concerned a larger global ii community.

Nous avons un rocker psychédélique en mal de reconnaissance de son jeu guitaristique, un batteur apocalyptique passionné de musique classique, un ex-batteur de jazz féru de rythmes africains et un organiste moyennement doué et surtout dilettante. Difficile d'espérer, a priori, que ces quatre personnages révolutionnent quoi que ce soit concernant la musique. Et pourtant. Mais ils ne l'auraient pas fait sans un sérieux coup de pouce. De qui donc ? D'un musicien d'origine suisse généralement parfaitement ignoré dans ce contexte. Je veux parler de Thomas Kessler. Car la plupart des musiciens qui ont pris part à l'aventure de ce que je conte ici ont longuement assisté aux cours de composition dispensés au Conservatoire de Berlin par le compositeur de musique contemporaine Thomas Kessler. Celui-ci, très soucieux de contribuer à la maturation artistique des jeunes musiciens berlinois qui assistaient à ses cours, ne se contentait pas de leur enseigner sa déjà longue expérience en Quand on évoque l'Ecole de Berlin, on sait parfaitement de quoi on parle. On parle matière de musique expérimentale. Il a mis, en effet, à leur de séquences hypnotiques, de solos envoûtants et souvent orientalisants, de sons disposition un véritable studio où ceux-ci pouvaient répéter étranges et de nappes éthérées, le tout contenu dans de longues plages musicales librement et s'aventurer à loisir dans toutes sortes de aux parfums d'ailleurs et d'infini.
