Giorgio Moroder Legendary Godfather of Electronica Announces Australian and New Zealand Headline Shows GIORGIO MORODER LEGENDARY GODFATHER OF ELECTRONICA ANNOUNCES AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND HEADLINE SHOWS Frontier Touring is delighted to confirm that iconic production pioneer Giorgio Moroder has announced three headline shows this month in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland alongside his appearances as special guest for Kylie’s upcoming Kiss Me Once Australian tour. An Academy Awardwinning composer, superstar DJ, worldrecognized songwriter and prolific producer, Giorgio Moroder is one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Having engineered the disco landscape of the seventies, Moroder brought electronic music to the mainstream with frequent collaborator Donna Summer and their anthemic hits ‘Love To Love You Baby’, ‘Hot Stuff’ and ‘I Feel Love’. As well as his title as godfather of dance, Moroder has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in cinema history, including The Never Ending Story, American Gigolo, Cat People, Superman III, Scarface, Rambo III, and Beverly Hills Cop II as well as hit soundtrack singles ‘Take My Breath Away’ by Berlin (Top Gun), ‘Flashdance’ by Irene Cara and ‘Call Me’ by Blondie (American Gigolo). His work for film has seen him win no less than three Academy Awards that sit proudly alongside his four Golden Globes, four Grammys and in 2004 was an inductee into the Dance Music Hall of Fame for his outstanding contribution to the music industry. As well as his own esteemed work as a solo artist Moroder has worked with a veritable who’s who of icons including Elton John, Cher, Janet Jackson, Freddy Mercury, David Bowie, Chaka Khan, Cheap Trick, and Pat Benatar. He recently worked alongside modern electronic maestros Afrojack, Hot Chip and Laidback Luke on the Donna Summer remix tribute album Love To Love You Donna (out now through The Verve Music, w atch single ‘Love To Love You Baby’ feat. Chris Cox). In 2013 Moroder contributed to Daft Punk’s R andom Access Memories (out now through Columbia Records) with ‘Giorgio By Moroder’, that featured autobiographical lyrics from Moroder’s amid electrobeats and a swirling orchestra. The same year Moroder performed around the world as a DJ including appearances at Way Out West in Sweden, WIRE in Japan, Electric Picnic in Ireland, Electronic Beats in Vienna and at Sydney’s own VIVID Festival in 2014, where he was met with huge acclaim. ‘A night celebrating the music of dance pioneer Giorgio Moroder was as lavish, dynamic and sexually charged as disco itself.’ – ★★★★★ Five Stars The Guardian In January Moroder announced his first solo studio album in over 30 years. 74 Is The New 24 is set for release later this year and features collaborations with Kylie, Britney Spears, Charli XCX, Matthew Koma, Mikky Ekko, Sia and more. The title track and first single, ‘74 Is The New 24’, is an explosive piece of dance floor brilliance that not only evokes Moroder’s legacy of disco but hails him as one of the most important acts to watch in 2015. Climbing the Top 10 throughout Europe, second single ‘R ight Here, Right Now’ features celestial vocals from Kylie herself and an inescapable hook. Giorgio Moroder’s forthcoming Australian and New Zealand headline performances are a unique opportunity to witness one of modern music’s biggest influences in action. With a new collection of sure fire dance floor fillers as well as a jaw dropping back catalogue, these are set to be some the exciting shows of 2015. Don’t miss out. Course Title Classic Albums: The Berlin/Germany Edition Course Number REMU-UT 9817 D01 Spring 2019 Syllabus last updated on: 23-Dec-2018 Lecturer Contact Information Course Details Wednesdays, 6:15pm to 7:30pm (14 weeks) Location NYU Berlin Academic Center, Room BLAC 101 Prerequisites No pre-requisites Units earned 2 credits Course Description A classic album is one that has been deemed by many —or even just a select influential few — as a standard bearer within or without its genre. In this class—a companion to the Classic Albums class offered in New York—we will look and listen at a selection of classic albums recorded in Berlin, or recorded in Germany more broadly, and how the city/country shaped them – from David Bowie's famous Berlin trilogy from 1977 – 79 to Ricardo Villalobos' minimal house masterpiece Alcachofa. We will deconstruct the music and production of these albums, putting them in full social and political context and exploring the range of reasons why they have garnered classic status. Artists, producers and engineers involved in the making of these albums will be invited to discuss their seminal works with the students. Along the way we will also consider the history of German electronic music. We will particularly look at how electronic music developed in Germany before the advent of house and techno in the late 1980s as well as the arrival of Techno, a new musical movement, and new technology in Berlin and Germany in the turbulent years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, up to the present.

  • Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, and “I Feel Love”
Thamyris/Intersecting No. 26 (2013) 43–54 Turning the Machine into a Slovenly Machine: Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, and “I Feel Love” Tilman Baumgärtel The track “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer still seems to come out of another world. Even though the song was produced three decades ago, it still sounds alien and futurist. And the world, out of which “I Feel Love” came, has been built out of loops, nothing but loops. The song rattles on and on like a machine gun. The loops appear deceptively simple at first. “I Feel Love” is based on the electronic throb of a pattern out of a few synthesizer notes the sequencer repeats over and over and occasionally transposes. But in the framework of these minimalist preconditions the track develops a field of rhythmic differences, deviations, and shifts. The blunt, mechanical thumping of a machine turns into complex polyrhythms, strict rule turns into confusing diversity, and eventually becomes an organism out of repetitions. Even Donna Summer herself eventually got lost in the confusing labyrinth of rhythms in “I Feel Love.” In this essay I want to show how producer Giorgio Moroder succeeded in trans- forming the clatter of the synthesizer loops of “I Feel Love” into an organic pulse with the help of a relatively simple production trick. Then, I want to discuss how “I Feel Love” systematically dissolves and collapses antithetical oppositions. This pro- duction trick not only lends an organic quality to the mechanical loops, but, in the process, amalgamates nature and technology on a musical level.

  • INTRODUCTION Fatal Attraction and Scarface
1 introduction Fatal Attraction and Scarface How We Think about Movies People respond to movies in different ways, and there are many reasons for this. We have all stood in the lobby of a theater and heard conflicting opin- ions from people who have just seen the same film. Some loved it, some were annoyed by it, some found it just OK. Perhaps we’ve thought, “Well, what do they know? Maybe they just didn’t get it.” So we go to the reviewers whose business it is to “get it.” But often they do not agree. One reviewer will love it, the next will tell us to save our money. What thrills one person may bore or even offend another. Disagreements and controversies, however, can reveal a great deal about the assumptions underlying these varying responses. If we explore these assumptions, we can ask questions about how sound they are. Questioning our assumptions and those of others is a good way to start think- ing about movies. We will soon see that there are many productive ways of thinking about movies and many approaches that we can use to analyze them. In Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1992), the actor playing Bruce Lee sits in an American movie theater (figure 1.1) and watches a scene from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) in which Audrey Hepburn’s glamorous character awakens her upstairs neighbor, Mr Yunioshi. Half awake, he jumps up, bangs his head on a low-hanging, “Oriental”-style lamp, and stumbles around his apart- ment crashing into things.

  • Mapping Topographies in the Anglo and German Narratives of Joseph Conrad, Anna Seghers, James Joyce, and Uwe Johnson
MAPPING TOPOGRAPHIES IN THE ANGLO AND GERMAN NARRATIVES OF JOSEPH CONRAD, ANNA SEGHERS, JAMES JOYCE, AND UWE JOHNSON DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kristy Rickards Boney, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by: Professor Helen Fehervary, Advisor Professor John Davidson Professor Jessica Prinz Advisor Graduate Program in Professor Alexander Stephan Germanic Languages and Literatures Copyright by Kristy Rickards Boney 2006 ABSTRACT While the “space” of modernism is traditionally associated with the metropolis, this approach leaves unaddressed a significant body of work that stresses non-urban settings. Rather than simply assuming these spaces to be the opposite of the modern city, my project rejects the empty term space and instead examines topographies, literally meaning the writing of place. Less an examination of passive settings, the study of topography in modernism explores the action of creating spaces—either real or fictional which intersect with a variety of cultural, social, historical, and often political reverberations. The combination of charged elements coalesce and form a strong visual, corporeal, and sensory-filled topography that becomes integral to understanding not only the text and its importance beyond literary studies. My study pairs four modernists—two writing in German and two in English: Joseph Conrad and Anna Seghers and James Joyce and Uwe Johnson. All writers, having experienced displacement through exile, used topographies in their narratives to illustrate not only their understanding of history and humanity, but they also wrote narratives which concerned a larger global ii community.
