You can Take-out from almost every restaurant near the school. The korean word for Take-out is 포장 (po-jang). If you do not finish your meal, you can also ask to take out what’s left ! 4 FOOD & DRINKS

The taste is excellent and you will be pleased with the great service.

Note : Going with a small group of people is great, so the cost will not get too expensive

8 마루기 MARUGI Price : ₩ 7,000 (average) Specialty : and Other : Takoyaki, Gyoza (fried dumplings) If you do not speak Korean, just ask for chicken, , pork or noodles and the waiters will help you. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor. Try Dish #1 and Dish #7 (trust us, you won’t be disappointed !)

미다래 9 MIDARAE Price : ₩ 7,000 wons Specialty : Donburi, Udon, Small but cozy restaurant with wide selection of japanese dishes and some .

Note: on the way to the station.

Donburi : bowl of rice covered with beef (gyudon), fried shrimp (ebidon), fried pork (), chicken+egg ()... Udon : often served in a soup : japanese egg noodles served in a soup Okonomiyaki : pancake filled with vegetbles/meat/seafood Tonkatsu : fried pork cutlets Takoyaki : ball-shaped snack filled with octopus MUST-TRY FAST-FOOD You might want to try those, after eating too much rice !

10 PIZZA SCHOOL

Price : ₩ 5,000 - 10,000 Specialty : Pizza (Irish potato, bulgogi, chicken, steak, ddukgalbi...) and Simple, Good and Cheap !

Note : they will give free pickles !

11 서울 치즈 피자 SEOUL CHEESE PIZZA Price : ₩ 6,000 Good pizzas at cheap prices. A bit more expensive than Pizza School but often preferred. Note : open until 11:20 p.m.

12 MC’DONALDS

Price : ₩ 6,600 (average) Note : if you arrive too late, remem- ber they change the regular menu for Breakfast Menu ! Also offers a delivery service. 9 STREET FOOD

Located on-route HUFS station, these street snack stores have yummy treats that make a good afternoon snack from₩ 500 to 3,000. If you order enough, it could even be sufficient for a meal. We recommend you to try Odeng (fish cake on sticks) because it’s only₩ 500 !

At the street side stalls, you can drink soup for free! Just grab a paper cup and help yourself to the hot soup.

10 STUDENT CAFETERIA Humanities Building 1st floor

It’s convenient and really cheap so we thought it could be a good idea to explain how the cafeteria works. Working hours : Breakfast : 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. Lunch : 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Dinner : 4:40 p.m. - 6:40 p.m. You can choose among snacks and two menus (refer to the screen to know at what time the dishes are available). 11 Selection of good cafes

Seoul is a city where cafes can be found everywhere. It is a nice place to hang out with friends, especially cafes that are themed/ interestingly decorated. Typically, an Americano would cost under 3000wons, and any latte/flavoured latte/mocha would cost between 3500-4200 wons on average. Most cafes will also serve tea, their own specialty drinks, as well as bagel and thick toast.

Cafés in HUFS If you are rushing for class but need caffeine to stay awake, there is nothing to worry about because there are a few cafes located right within HUFS campus!

Caffe Bene One floor above Obama Hall Caffe Bene is one of the largest coffee chains in Korea

Grazie/Atti cafe Behind the library They have a study corner set aside in the cafe

- Be Bridge cafe (Globeedorm level 3) : They offer a variety of inter- esting drinks from different countries - Café Nescafe (Globeedorm level 1) : The coffee here is quite popular with students. Also, it is a brand of coffee you probably recognize - Artisée (Cyber Building) : Slightly pricey, but they sell really good bread.

Paris Baguette Café 1 They have cutely designed cups/cup hold- ers, as well as top 5 best selling bread that you should definitely try

Coffee D.N.A Roasting Company Popular among students, they only offer 2 take-outs. For those particular about the milk in their coffee, they offer you the choice of low fat or soy milk

The Yang Take Out They only offer take-outs, and their coffee 3 is one of the cheapest near school. (Amer- icano is under 2000wons)

4 - Café I’M : Their bagel is good, and they sell pak bingsu that looks very appetizing too! Plus point is that the café has quite a homey inte- rior, and a really clean toilet. 5 - : One of the biggest coffee chains in Korea; they serve quite a wide variety of drinks at an affordable price. 6 - Book Cafe : A great place if you are looking for a quiet environment to get work done. Every table has a little study lamp for you to use.

Bars around HUFS

7 RANDY’S This small but cool place is five minutes away from HUFS, many international students come here to have a good time chilling with their friends with a cold beer. Sharing a pitcher is a good option to break the ice and make new friends! Note: Do not worry if you do not like beer, they have a great variety of drinks for you. Also they have a pool table.

8 GIG Even smaller than Randy’s but cool as well. Here you can take your beer directly from the fridge without calling the waiter; you may also choose the songs that you want to hear in the bar. Note: GIG provides several brands of beer, going from Cass (One of the favorites here) to the well- known Corona.

TOM’s 9 This small place (again, I know) also has a bil- liard table for those lovers of Pool; likewise, with each pitcher you have to order some snacks too (Squid, Corn, Chips). Note: TOM’ is the smallest bar among these three, but if you visit this place once you will come back again.

14 Seoul night - time drinks !

As you have noticed, HUFS is not located in the city centre. If you want to go to bigger bars and clubs, there are three main neighbour- hoods for that. Let us introduce them !

Hongik University (Hongdae) (Line 2, Hongik station, Exit 9) Young and fun neighbourhood, dynam- ic even on weekdays and full of cheap shops, bars, clubs, street musicians and restaurants. Famous clubs : M2, Cocoon, NB2

Itaewon (Line 6, Itaewon station) International and cosmopolitan neigh- bourhood filled with bars and clubs. Famous clubs : Volume, Club Spy

Gangnam (Line 7, Cheongdam/Hackdong stations) Fancy and famous clubbing area, you can find many good places. But the entrance fee is more expensive here (around 30,000wons). Famous clubs : Ellui, Octagon, NB

For a fun and unforgettable Korean experience that allows drinking too , you should try Karaoke ! The korean word for it is Noraebang 노래방

15 DAILY NECESSITIES GROCERY We noticed that most foreigners were struggling to find groceries in . Here is some information about groceries around HUFS !

1 EMART The largest supermarket you can find around HUFS, it will sell most things that you may need. Opening hours: 09:00-24:00

You can buy: Bathroom essentials, snacks, drinks, fruits, small selec- tion of cooked food. If you cook, there is also meat, sea- food and vegetables here Note: Many items are sold in value packs; you could grab a friend or two along when you head down!

There are 2 other big supermarket chains in Seoul : Lotte & Home Plus, there you can find much more items and espe- cially foreign products !

Convenience Stores are really famous in Korea, 7eleven is

TIPS one example but there are other chains too, like C’U, GS25 and Family Mart. 21 2 7ELEVEN As any other 7Eleven this little convenience store is packed to the brim with snacks, ready-to-eat meals, beverages and an assorment of emergency items you may need at almost any time of the night and day, at very attractive prices. It will come in handy.

3 “ORANGE DISCOUNT MART” As its name suggests, some items here are cheaper than in the above two stores Opening hours: not specified, but afternoons are a safe bet! You can buy: Bathroom essentials, drinks, snacks, fruits, vegetables (if you cook) Note: This mart has more local selection

LOTTE MARKET 999 4 Nowhere near as large as E-mart, but a number of items are cheaper here if you are not buying in bulk.

Opening hours: 08:00-23:00; closed on some Sundays

You can buy: Bathroom essentials, drinks, snacks, fruits, small selection of meat and vegetables (if you cook) 17 L LOCAL STORES

Local fruits and vegetables store In the late afternoon, you will see many locals crowding around this store. Opening hours: not specified, but the widest selection can be found in the evening (around 6pm) You can buy: Great selection of fruits and vegetables (they look very fresh!)

HOMEWEAR Anything you need to make your “home” comfortable during your stay !

5 DAISO

You can find a value for money items at Daiso starting from ₩ 1000.

You can buy: Plastics (bottles, containers, clothes hangers), eating utensils, stationery, snacks, cleaning materials.

Daiso is located just next to Mcdonald’s.

Every student must go there in order to buy their bedclothes in order to sleep tight before going to class.

There is a large choice of items and many different kinds.

However, the prices are a bit expensive, around W40,000 for a pillow and a blanket.

11 NAIL AVENUE

Nail salon where you can have pedi- cure from ₩ 1,000 to 25,000, mani- cure from ₩ 10,000 to 15,000.

Nail care, nail coloring, foot massage with prices from ₩ 6,000 to 15,000.

That’s quite cheap right ? So don’t hesitate to go !

2 2 ETUDE HOUSE

Famous korean beauty products brand. You can find any kind of make-up and creams that will make you like the “Cute” Korean touch. Besides, prices are cheaper than foreign products ! 20 3 H. STYLE Situated on top of the 7Eleven, H. Style is a hair salon where you can ask for a cut, style, dye or hair treatment, for a reason- able price, depending on your demand. Most of hairdressers cannot speak english so the most convenient is to bring a pic- ture (or a Korean friend !) with you.

OLIVE YOUNG Famous Beauty shops chain (such as Watsons) with great variety of branded and quite expensive products. You can also find snacks and drinks there !

BODY CARE

GYM (MINERVA COMPLEX) You will have to register and pay it ad- vance (cheap fee) to use this Gym. There is also a free gym in the Globee Dorm, downstairs, open until 10pm. Note: For soccer or cheer leading, you can contact Demetra E. Gates at OISS Office. For other clubs, just visit the ISO Office. 21 HEALTH CARE

5 PHARMACY Pharmacies are easily recognizable with the sign 약 - yak.

DENTAL CLINIC Han Soo Hyun dental clinic of- fers outstanding medical care with utmost competent staff and latest advances in dental care technologies.

CLINIC At the Choi Il Kyu clinic you get a quick appointment (about ₩ 30,000) with a doctor who speaks a clear and understandable english.

8 MAC’S PC MAC’S PC is a cheap option for those who need to use a computer. These are top-of-the-line computers and are mostly used for gaming.

Basic snacks and drinks are available. Headphones are free of charge.

The price is only₩ 500 per hour. with a membership. Memberships are free and only require to register.

9 KARAOKE Noraebang (korean karaoke) is one of the hottest Korean entertainment spots. There karaoke rooms are every- where. They offer songs from all over the world. Food, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are available for purchase. The price is about₩ 20,000 for one room. 23 ESSENTIALS

POSTAL SERVICE

HUFS POST OFFICE The post office is located within the university just next to the cafeteria. You can dispatch by ship, air or express (any size), to the whole world from this post office. But remember that is is closed on holi- days and sundays.

COPY / PRINT

10 COPY SHOP Located directly in front of the main entrance, they offer low cost copy and print. Also available : the multiplication of whole books. ₩ 50 for one copy. From ₩ 10,000 to 20,000 for a copy of a 24 book (depends on the book). BANKING SERVICE

WOORI BANK 11 Here you can create a bank account for free, withdraw/deposit money directly from the ATM or the counter, exchange your money. If you live in the Globeedorm, you will come here to pay the rent in cash. There are english speakers who can help you if you have any question.

PHONE SERVICE

12 OLLEH (Operator) If you need a korean number dur- ing your stay, you can go to Olleh with your Passport or Alien Card to suscribe for prepaid card. An english-speaker is often in the store during the week and will help you. You can also go to the Global Olleh store (Hongik station exit 9). Most of us don’t have one because the Wi-Fi is free almost everywhere.

Kakaotalk - English Korean application similar to Whatsapp that all Koreans use. You will need it for all your group projects. It’s a really TIPS useful app that allows free calls with a Android Iphone Wi-fi connection. Campus map

Subway & Buses The first thing to do when you arrive in Seoul is to purchase a T-money transit card. This card is the most practical way for you to pay for the subway and the buses. You can purchase it in any convenient store or sub- way stations. It costs around 5000 wons. To charge it, it is really simple you just need to use the subway tickets vending machines in any suway station and just follow the instructions (You can only pay by CASH).

Bus fare : 1,050 wons Subway fare : 1,050 wons (increases with the distance)

Buses around HUFS

147 (in front of Real Ramyeon) - 북서울꿈의숲(Dream forest) 261 (in front of hufs bookstore) - 여의도(Yeo-ui-do), 동대문(Dong- dae-mun) 273 (in front of hufs bookstore) - With this bus, you can go to 고려대 (Korea univ.), 이화여대(Ihwa univ.)/홍대(Hongik Univ.)=신촌(Shin- chon area), 성균관대(Seong-gyun-gwan Univ.)=대학로(Dae-hak-ro). And also, this bus go to 종로(Jong-ro), 광화문(Gwang-hwa-mun).

N13 - this bus is the night bus. it runs from 12:00a.m. to 03:25a.m. This goes via Heogi, Cheongryangri to Sin sa, Gang-nam area and to Song-pa.

28 TRANSPORTATION

Do not forget to scan your T-money card when leaving the bus in or- der to have a free transfer.

Taxis

Taking a taxi can be very convenient in Seoul and it is quite cheap, espe- cially if you share it with you friends. Considering the time and the route the driver will take the fare might change (it is always more confortable to ride with a Korean speaker).

Price average for some basic courses (may differ in reality): - HUFS to Hongik University (Hongdae): 35min, 23kms, 19,300wons - HUFS to Itaewon (International area): 28min, 17kms, 14,800wons - HUFS to Namsan (mountain): 29min, 9kms, 10,600wons - HUFS to Han River (Yeuido): 29min, 24kms, 18,900wons

There are 2 categories of taxis, ordinary taxis (orange and grey taxis) you will mostly use and there are also Deluxe taxis (black taxis) offer- ing the best confort and rides but for a much higher price.
