WATER UTILIZATION AND WATER MANAGEMENT BALANCES OF THE LOM RIVER BASIN IN BULGARIA StIiliana Yancheva, Maria Temelkova Institute of Water Problems, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Sofia , Bulgaria [email protected], [email protected] Abstract The paper present the received results from water management balance (WMB) for existing multi - purpose water resources system (WRS) in the Lom river basin – one important feeder of Danube river in North-West Bulgaria. It is done a short description and are marked the specific features of present water resources use in the river valley. For certain points from the river network are determined the main statistical characteristics of natural river flow (for the period 1961 - 2004 year). Based on the developed scheme for water use and different variants of the individual users needs are made water management balances (WMB). Experimental simulations researches for WMB are carried out with prepared input information for the inflow and water demand. Sequences for the inflow and irrigation demand in the relevant points are 44 years long by months. The results for different variants of WMB are analyzed and it is made assessment of water availability of different users. The Lom river basin problems in result of the economical, political and climate changes are discussed. Keywords: river basin, water management balance, water supply availability, water resources management, operation, management, computer model, simulation, climate change. 1 INTRODUCTION The implementation of the European directive for water (Directive 2000/60/EU) and the Law for water in Bulgaria makes necessary the developing of Plans for water management of river basins (PMRB). That is why it needs to be done an assessment for the condition of the water resources and to develop water management balances (WMB) in the river basins.

E-mail: [email protected] Received 9 January 2019 │ Accepted by V. Pešić: 7 March 2019 │ Published online 9 March 2019. Abstract The paper represents results of surveys carried out in the Western Stara Planina Mts within the last four years in order to improve the knowledge of the butterfly fauna, especially in the Bulgarian part of the mountain. A total of 150 species of Lepidoptera (Papilionoidea) was recorded with comments on their distribution in the Bulgarian part of the studied region. Nineteen species were recorded for the first time in the Bulgarian part of the mountain and one species (Apatura metis) – for the Serbian part. It has been found that the highest butterfly diversity is linked to the largest limestone area in the mountain near Komshtitsa Village where 101 species were observed. Interesting records for some rare or endangered species (Muschampia cribrellum, M. tessellum, Lycaena helle, Kirinia climene, Apatura metis, Nymphalis vaualbum, Melitaea didyma, M. arduinna, M. diamina and Brenthis ino) are discussed in detail. The high conservation value of the studied region proves by the species considered as threatened at the European level, of which seven species are included in the Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive, 12 species are listed in the Red Data Book of European butterflies and 26 in the European Red List of Butterflies.

“ROAD MAP” FOR REVISION OF THE BULGARIAN BIOSPHERE RESERVES DESIGNATED UNDER UNESCO’S MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE PROGRAMME “ROAD MAP” FOR REVISION OF THE BULGARIAN BIOSPHERE RESERVES DESIGNATED UNDER UNESCO’S MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE PROGRAMME CURRENT STATE Bulgaria has 16 Biosphere reservesn (BR) all designated in 1977 – Alibotush, Bayuvi Dupki - Dzhindzhiritsa, Bistrishko Branishte, Boatin, Chervenata stena, Chuprene, Dzhendema, Dupkata, Kamchia, Kupena, Mantaritsa, Uzunbudzhak, Parangalitsa, Srebarna, Steneto, Tsarichina. They were selected to represent typical ecosystems with relatively untouched biotic and abiotic components and are more or less evenly distributed throughout the country. All BRs belong to the first generation of Biosphere Reserves, designated long before the adoption of the Seville Strategy and the Statutory Framework, and thus, they were established only with core zones. So, only the conservation and partly the logistic support funtions, related to research and biodiversity monitoring have been taking place. None of the 16 Bulgarian BRs coressponds to the zoning and functional requirements of the Seville Strategy and Statutory framework, adopted in 1995. Fifteen BRs are strict reserves and one (Srebarna) is a managed reserve according to the Bulgarian legislation. These categories are very strict and do not allow any human activities related to sustainable usage of natural resources. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria (Article 18) and the Protected Areas Act - PAA (Article 8, paragraph 1), the strict and managed reserves are exclusive state property and are managed by the respective governmental institutions and their branches, i.e. the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) and the Regional Inspectorates of Environment and Water (RIEW).

  • 41. Carboniferous Granodiorite
    41. Carboniferous granodiorite Location. 34 T 641581 E, 4809904 N. It is located 6.7 km south of Gorni Lom village. Category. Geosite of scientific value: outcrop of Carboniferous granodiorites. Geological setting. The outcrop is located in the Late Carboniferous St. Nikola Pluton, belonging to the Balkan granite-granodiorite complex. It is intruded between the rocks of the Chernivrah metamorphic complex and Berkovitsa low-grade metamorphic complex, parts of Berkovitsa tectonic unit. Description. The rocks of the St. Nikola Pluton crop out as prolonged in East-West direction body with width 3-3,5 km and length 16-17 km, continuing on Serbian territory. The pluton is composed of massive leucocratic to mesocratic coarse-grained rocks of granodiorite-granite composition, feldspar and quartz porphyry in places. The main rock-forming minerals are plagioclase, potassium feldspar, quartz and hornblende. Granite texture is plagioclase porphyry, and granodiorites are uneven-granular. In the rocks of the pluton is observed planar parallelism with equatorial orientation and inclination to the south from 40 to 85°. In places they show schistosity due to local tectonic events. In tectonically reworked areas granodiorites have undergone imposed metasomatic processes. Recent geochronological dating upon zircon (Carrigan et al., 2005) for St. Nikola Pluton indicate absolute age 311,9 ± 4,1 Ma, which refers to the Upper Carboniferous. Surrounding landscape. The area is surrounded by beautiful forests on the northern slopes of the highest part of the Western Balkan with peak Midzhur and outcrops of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Sensitivity and protection measures. Location of the geosite should be marked by dashboard with data about the Carboniferous magmatism and geology of the area in the center of Gorni Lom village.

Historia naturalis bulgarica, An annotated catalogue of the millipede order Julida... 35 18: 35-63, 2007 An annotated catalogue of the millipede order Julida (Diplopoda) in Bulgaria Boyan VAGALINSKI, Pavel STOEV VAGALINSKI B., STOEV P. 2007. An annotated catalogue of the millipede order Julida (Diplopoda) in Bulgaria. – Historia naturalis bulgarica, 18: 35-63. Abstract. The paper presents the first catalogue of the millipede order Julida (Diplopoda: Helminthomorpha) in Bulgaria. The order is currently known to comprise 3 families (Blaniulidae, Nemasomatidae and Julidae), 21 valid genera, 51 species and 3 subspecies in the country. Another 11 species and the genus Thachypodoiulus were quoted probably erroneously for Bulgaria. Archiboreoiulus pallidus and Megaphyllum dentatum were reported without mention of their exact localities, and have never been found since. All relevant literature sources are given for each species group taxon with exact pages; detailed distribution by geographical regions; as well as a list of habitats where the species was found in the country; altitudinal range; chorotype; and sometimes additional remarks. New data, among which the second and third finds in the country of Megaphyllum anatolicum denticulatum and Brachyiulus bagnalli, respectively, are given for 19 species. The paper also provides brief analysis about the habitat preferences and zoogeographical affinities of Bulgarian julids. Key words: Myriapoda, Julidae, Blaniulidae, Nemasomatidae, review, distribution, habitats, Bulgaria Introduction The study of the millipedes of order Julida in Bulgaria began with CHRISTOVICH (1892) who reported Iulus sabulosus from the Vitosha Mts. In the next fifty years julids found in Bulgaria were mentioned in the papers of ATTEMS (1904), JURINICH (1904), VERHOEFF (1926a, 1926b, 1928, 1937), SCHUBART (1934), LANG (1935, 1958) and JAWLOWSKI (1938).

Venets: The Belogradchik Journal for Local History, Cultural Heritage and Folk Studies Volume 6, Number 1, 2015 Research BORDERS AND BORDER ZONES: DIFFERENCES AND EQUALITIES Veliko Tarnovo, 30 May – 1 June, 2014 THE TORLAKS REGIONAL IDENTITY(-IES) AS A MOTIVE FOR CROSS-BORDER COLLABORATION IN SERBIAN-BULGARIAN BORDER ZONES Dejan KRSTIC Municipality of Zajecar, Serbia ______________________________________________________________ Abstract. Article presents a case study of local group named Torlaks inhabiting border zones of Serbian-Bulgarian states border. Because of mostly conflicting policies of neighboring Balkan states during 19th and 20th centuries the border was quite impervious. For decades, cross-border communication was interrupted. Over time, under the same ethnonym on both sides, and be- cause of the imperviousness of the border, different identity contents devel- oped, therefore one can speak about two different Torlak identities. The Tor- laks on both sides of the border got different national identities - those in Bul- garia are Bulgarians, and those in Serbia are Serbs. In the beginning of 21st century political and economic situation encouraged cross-border cooperation between the two countries and especially between the inhabitants of border 85 zones. New process of reunion of separated group and development of com- mon identity arose. Article describes the main manifestations of this process. Keywords: identity, border, border zones, policies, torlaks _______________________________________________________________ A bout the genesis and the development of the Torlaks regional identities There are several variations of words with a root tor in languages of Mongolian, Tibetan and Turkish people, where they denote some type of spa- tial confines (“bird trap”, “net”, “lasso” etc.). The words with this root came into the Balkans with the Turks.

  • Integral Environmental Assessment of Ogosta River Basin (Northwestern Bulgaria)
Integral Environmental Assessment of Ogosta River Basin (Northwestern Bulgaria) Dora Angelova Geological Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria email: [email protected] Abstract The present catchment basin of Ogosta river takes an area of 3,110 km2. The forming of river system in this basin is a result of diversities of endogenic-exogenic geodynamics of Fore Carpathian basin and Carpathian-Balkan horst-block mountain chain in Neogene and Quaternary. The cyclic tectonic and climatic undulations lead to radical changes of regional erosion base and local bases as well. These radical changes resulted in realization of multiple reorientations of water basins on the background of disappearing Neogene basin and simultaneously raising up of Carpathian-Balkan mountain chain, more precisely – of West Stara Planina mountain. At the lower courses of the rivers belonging to Ogosta river basin the Pleistocene loess complex up to 110 m thick with its five buried soil horizons mark and fossilize the development of older river valleys. The varied geological-tectonic structure facilitated the development of selective erosion and denudation to various extents. This resulted in the origination and shaping of multiple gorges, falls, valley widening, mountain and plain karst, asymmetric and symmetric parts, different river bed dips, etc. The erosion, erosion-denudation, deflation and karst relief in the Ogosta river basin besides the intensified recent morphodynamic processes is strongly influenced by the anthropogenic impact as well from the remote past to the present days (mining, agriculture, engineering, etc.). As a result of these processes in the basin are found 94 terrains strongly polluted with substandard substances in soil and water.
