============================================================================================= Vol. 15, No. 2 May, 2011 ============================================================================================= Acadia Bio-Blitz 2011: LEPS! There's still time to register for the 9th annual bioblitz at Acadia National Park on July 22-25, 2011, sponsored by the National Park Service, Maine Forest Service, Maine Entomological Society, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, and the SERC Institute at Acadia National Park. This year, the target group is the Lepidoptera: moths and butterflies. The event is open to professional entomologists, amateur naturalists, and other interested persons. As in the past, the event will be based at the park’s Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC) and collecting will be focused in the Schoodic section of the park. Lodging at the Schoodic Education and Research Center will be provided to participants at no charge; however space is limited, and will is available on a first-registered, first-served basis. Participants will only need to pay a small registration fee and food costs - meals will be provided by the SERC Institute. The event will begin with dinner Friday evening, followed by presentations on current research and issues of interest to the entomological and natural history community. This is certainly preferred for ease of data input. The new version of Levana now has an excellent import facility, that can convert pages of records in a few seconds. MS Excel, MS Works, or tables in MS Word or tab-text are all acceptable file types. It not only makes my life much easier, it is a joy to use! Please remember to include your name in the file name of your records. On days where several different recorders send a file called ‘butterfly records 11’, it’s chaos! It also helps if you include a header with your name on so that your printed records can be easily attributed to you. Woefully few people have taken this on board. Thanks to those that have, it takes so little to bring joy and relief to this poor recorder. Any recorders with computers but not currently sending their records electronically, please consider doing so. Even if you don’t have email, records can be sent on disc. These data highlight the continued range expansion of exotic species across North America. These new records also indicate that our collective knowledge of Pacific Northwest arthropod biodiversity and biogeography is underdeveloped, even for a relatively well known and species-poor group of insects. -

In the quest for information of use to bumble bee conservation the potential of our flower-rich cities has been overlooked. The overall aim of this study was to determine the status and foraging requirements of bumble bees in the urban environment provided by the city of London, U.K. My principal findings are as follows. Six common species and three rare species were identified. The greatest diversity of Bombus species was found in the east of London. Garden and wasteland habitats attracted the greatest abundance of workers and diversity of Bombus species. -

WELFORD ROAD CEMETERY BIOBLITZ 2016 Acknowledgements The organisers would like to thank all partners involved in the event; particularly members of the public, surveyors and volunteers who gave their time to take part and without whom the Welford Road Cemetery Leicester BioBlitz 2016 would not have been possible. A total of 316 species were found during the Leicester Bioblitz at Welford Road Cemetery 120 children took part What Is A A BioBlitz is an event varying in length but can last up to one whole day (24-hours) during which intense biological surveys are conducted within a designated area. It aims to record all living species present, from animals and plants, to fungi and algae. A BioBlitz strives to cover as many taxa as possible, with specialist scientists and naturalists from a range of disciplines pooling their identification abilities and knowledge to produce a species record. The term was coined in 1996 by Susan Rudy, a US National Park Service naturalist who helped with the first ever event at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Washington DC. Since then, BioBlitzes have taken place all across the world. BioBlitz events which are held annually/seasonally or in a particular location can help build up a better picture of how the site changes and supports biodiversity over time. Alongside the scientific data gathered, an important component of any BioBlitz is the involvement of the public and encouragement of citizen science. Events like this, which allow local people to engage with the biodiversity in their area, provide people with an excellent opportunity to venture into the world of science and conservation and to better understand the nature world around them.
