Besonders bei den Großgottesdiensten ist das immer wieder deutlich zu spüren. Die Corona-Pandemie hat unsere Planungen in diesem Jahr durcheinandergebracht. Wir wollen trotzdem diskutieren, uns digital begegnen und auch Gottesdienste feiern. Das ist wichtig – persönlich, füreinander und für unsere Gesellschaft. Der Schlussgottesdienst des 3. Ökumenische Kirchentages wird vor Ort in Frankfurt am Main auf einer Bühne an der „Weseler Werft“ gefeiert werden. Gleichzeitig wird dieser Gottesdienst live im ZDF übertragen und ein Mitfeiern ist bundesweit möglich. Dieses Mitfeiern wollen wir durch dieses Materialheft unterstützen. Sie finden den Ablauf des Gottesdienstes, die Lieder, eine Druckvorlage für einen „Gottesdienstzettel“ wie auch eine „exegetische Skizze“ für den dem Schlussgottesdienst zugrundeliegenden Bibeltext Jesaja 51,1–5. Darüber hinaus sind auch Ideen beschrieben, wie in einer Kirchengemeinde ein gemeinsames Mitfeiern des Schlussgottesdienstes eingebettet werden kann. „Schaut hin – blickt durch – geht los“. IASL 2015; 40(1): 1–20 Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf „… und steure deiner Feinde Mord“ Gewalt im Kirchenlied Abstract: This essay looks at moments of violence in Christian hymns. It analyzes chants used in the early modern struggle between Catholics and Protestants and in missionary movements which still can be found in contemporary hymnbooks. The article shows that the chants not only direct aggression against an outer enemy but also against the fiend within. As the German word ‘Gewalt’ means both ‘violence’ and ‘power’, the hymns oscillate between both meanings. The ‘Gewalt’ being praised in the hymns often self-reflectively addresses the chants’ own violence and/or power as it is illustrated by a brief look at Heinrich von Kleist’s novella Die heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik. DOI 10.1515/iasl-2015-0001 Kirchenlieder mit Gewalt in Verbindung zu bringen, liegt auf den ersten Blick nicht unbedingt nahe, dient das Kirchenlied doch in erster Linie der gottesdienst- lichen Erbauung und dem Lob Gottes. Und doch gibt es in den Gesangbüchern, die insgesamt ziemlich politisch korrekt geworden sind,1 bis heute Liedtexte, in denen es keineswegs zimperlich zugeht. Dies ist umso mehr in historischen Gesangbüchern der Fall. Es ist ein Leichtes, hier Beispiele zu präsentieren, bei denen man sich fragt, wie sie gesungen werden konnten, ohne dass sich dabei das christliche Gewissen regte. Im Fokus des vorliegenden Beitrags steht jedoch das, was tatsächlich in den Gesangbüchern stehen geblieben ist, was gewisser- maßen die Gewalt-Zensur überstanden hat und vielleicht doch unter dem Vor- zeichen einer gepflegten, impliziten, subtilen, in ihrer Ambiguität vielleicht den- noch wirkmächtigen Gewaltförmigkeit diskutiert werden kann. -

And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. -

It would cost me much, not to undertake any task which you might wish me to essay. You know how long it has been my wish to part with all controversy, and to consecrate the evening of my life to the unfolding of some of the deep truths of God’s Holy Word, as God might enable me, by aid of those whom He has taught in times past. This employment, and practical duties which God has brought to me, were my ideal of the employments of the closing years of a laborious life. Osman Washington, D.C. 2015 A Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity: A Neglected Catechetical Text of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore John H. Osman, Ph.D. Director: Joseph M. White, Ph.D. At the 1884 Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, the US Catholic bishops commissioned a national prayer book titled the Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity and the widely-known Baltimore Catechism. This study examines the Manual’s genesis, contents, and publication history to understand its contribution to the Church’s teaching efforts. To account for the Manual’s contents, the study describes prayer book genres developed in the British Isles that shaped similar publications for use by American Catholics. The study considers the critiques of bishops and others concerning US-published prayer books, and episcopal decrees to address their weak theological content. To improve understanding of the Church’s liturgy, the bishops commissioned a prayer book for the laity containing selections from Roman liturgical books. The study quantifies the text’s sources from liturgical and devotional books. The book’s compiler, Rev. Clarence Woodman, C.S.P., adopted the English manual prayer book genre while most of the book’s content derived from the Roman Missal, Breviary, and Ritual, albeit augmented with highly regarded English and US prayers and instructions. -

A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Dana Katz 2016 A Changing Mosaic: Multicultural Exchange in the Norman Palaces of Twelfth-Century Sicily by Dana Katz Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Art University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation examines the twelfth-century residences associated with the Norman Hautevilles in the parklands that surrounded their capital at Palermo. One of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval secular architecture, the principal monuments are the palaces of La Zisa and La Cuba, the complexes of La Favara and Lo Scibene, the hunting lodge at Parco, and the palace at Monreale. The Norman conquest of Sicily in the previous century dramatically altered the local population’s religious and cultural identity. Nevertheless, an Islamic legacy persisted in the park architecture, arranged on axial plans with waterworks and ornamented with muqarnas vaults. By this time, the last Norman king, William II, and his court became aligned with contemporaries in the Latin West, and Muslims became marginalized in Sicily. Part One examines the modern “discovery” and reception of the twelfth-century palaces. As secular examples built in an Islamic mode, they did not fit preconceived paradigms of medieval Western architecture in the scholarly literature, greatly endangering their preservation. My examination reconstructs the vast landscape created by the Norman kings, who modified their surroundings on a monumental scale. Water in the parklands was harnessed to provide for ii artificial lakes and other waterscapes onto which the built environment was sited. -

Ezenezi Doctor of Philosophy in Theology University of St. Michael’s College 2015 Abstract Vatican II stipulates that the laity by virtue of their baptism are constitutive members of the Church and should play their role in the mission of the whole Christian faithful in the Church and the world. More than fifty years since the beginning of the Council, the Church in Nigeria is still struggling to understand itself as well as to discern the identity, the role and participation of the lay Christian faithful in the mission of the Church. This thesis explores and analyzes the strengths and limitations of the current dominant ecclesiology of the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria, and constructively suggests various means of overcoming some of these deficiencies. It will proffer and argue that the contemporary challenges which Vatican II’s theology of the laity faces today in the Nigerian Roman Catholic Church call for a Church that is not only participatory, but also prophetic as well as a Church that engages and is constantly in solidarity with the people of God. -

Historical research, appropriately, focuses on "the what,” “the who," and "the when.” To many historians, "the where," the geographical component, is much less important, and, indeed, is sometimes overlooked. One of my students once reflected on the interplay of the two disciplines: “Historical geography, in contrast to history, focuses on locations before dates, places before personalities, distributions before events, and regions before eras.
