Its purpose is to assist with the ultimate aim or goal of catechesis, which according to St. John Paul II is “to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: only he can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity." (On Catechesis in Our Time, no. 5) It is also intended to ensure that the same content is being taught consistently in our parishes and Catholic schools, and to provide guidance for families who homeschool. In order to most effectively utilize this course of study, we ask each teacher or catechist to follow these practical steps: 1) Review PreK-8 chart, or the 9-12 grade chart, to get a basic sense of the subjects being taught for each grade level; later on, you can skim through the Course of Study for more detail. Note that the content for grades PreK-8 is now divided into 5 categories: ScriptureU U and the Four Pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (ProfessionU of Faith,U SacramentsU ,U ULife in Christ,U and ChristiaU n PrayerU). The content of Grades 9-12 continues to follow very closely the 2008 Doctrinal Framework document from the USCCB. 2) Familiarize yourself with the material for your own grade level; then mark your teacher's manual to indicate exactly where the material from your course of study is located in your textbook; if your textbook does not cover a certain area indicated in the course of study, it is your responsibility to teach this material from another source. 3) Please remember that you are not teaching the textbook --- you are teaching the course of study. Therefore, it is important that you teach all of the material for your grade level as indicated in the course of study. You are not obliged to "finish" the whole textbook, but rather to finish the whole course of study for your grade level. 4) Make a general plan for the whole year so that all the topics for your grade level will be covered appropriately. 5) Each week carefully plan your lesson to cover the material in the course of study: a. pray to the Holy Spirit before and after you plan your lesson b. write out your lesson plan; vary your activities (note: merely reading from a textbook each class can be deadening, so using a variety approaches is encouraged) Page 7 of 260 PreK – 12 Religion Course of Study --- Diocese of Toledo --- 2018 c. arrive early, have your materials ready, and greet the students at the door 6) Be sure to familiarize yourself with the appendix, as there are a number of tools and helpful resources. 7) Note there is a Glossary of terms which is designed to help familiarize you, and your students, with key terms and their meaning. Textbooks In keeping with diocesan policy, textbooks are to be selected from those listed by the USCCB as being in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church (see this link for the most recent listing: http://www.usccb.org/about/evangelization30TU -and-catechesis/subcommittee-on- catechism/conformity-review/index.cfm U30T Six Tasks of Catechesis At the heart of drawing students to communion with Christ is that of formation for discipleship. Jesus instructed his disciples, he prayed with them, he showed them how to live, and he gave them his mission. Christ's method of formation was accomplished by diverse, yet interrelated tasks. His example is the most important inspiration for effective catechesis today. Catechesis must address each of the different dimensions of faith. Each is a distinct yet complimentary task. Faith must be known, celebrated, lived, and expressed in prayer. Catechesis comprises six fundamental tasks, each of which is related to an aspect of faith in Christ. All efforts in catechesis should incorporate the following six tasks (cf. National Directory for Catechesis, p. 59-63): 1) to promote knowledge of the Catholic Faith 2) to promote knowledge of the liturgy and sacraments 3) to promote moral formation in Christ 4) to teach how to pray 5) to prepare the Christian to live in community and to participate actively in the life and mission of the Church 6) to promote a missionary spirit that prepares the faithful to be present as Christians in Society All of those involved in passing on the Catholic Faith to our students are encouraged to keep these six tasks in mind, and to ensure that all catechetical endeavors are shaped and directed by each of them. May this revised Course of Study prove to be a valuable aid and guide for fruitful catechetical ministry in the Diocese of Toledo! Page 8 of 260 PreK – 12 Religion

VINCENT FERRER, 869 Lexington Ave. New York, NY 10065 USA Abstract In the early 1980s, Cardinal Ratzinger and Archbishop Lefebvre undertook a corre­ spondence concerning the reception of the texts of the Second Vatican Council and the liturgical rites promulgated by Pope Paul VI. In contrast to Lefebvre 's hermeneutical emphasis on the individual drafters of the documents, Ratzinger proposed that these texts and rites should be understood not as the productions of individuals but as documents of the Magisterium and liturgical rites of the Church. In this essay, Ratzinger 's distinction is explored further by appeal to the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, who offers helpful in­ dications/or understanding the respective roles of individuals and the Church as a whole in the development of liturgical and doctrinal expressions of the faith of the Church. The essay concludes by proposing a language of "ecclesial authorship" of magisterial and liturgical texts that emphasizes the continuity that abides in the reform and development of the Church 's liturgy and doctrine.     Thurifer Procedures Preparing for Mass *Attire…dress as you would…when serving as Acolyte *Arrive inside church at a minimum 45 minutes before the start of Mass. *Position Censer Stand near Ambo/Lectern/Pulpit. You will need easy access to return boat before Gospel reading. Gather the following in Sacristy: *Thurible… (Metal censer suspended from chains) --Contains 4 items: Base; Tray; Top; Chains --If necessary, you may need to clean out any unburnt coals from the tray. You can dispense the coals directly in to the trash…please insure coals have been cooled. If not…place in sink, flow water over them. --Lighter…make certain it flames --Boat…contains the incense. Fill boat with incense --Spoon…position spoon in boat --Charcoal…2 discs Lighting of charcoal…10 minutes prior to start of Mass or Procession Service --Use tongs...with Star facing down…hold charcoal disc below countertop level. --Place lighter on underside of disc…the charcoal will flare…sparks will come off disc…continue to light until sparks have stopped.     “Your love and your grace. It is all I need.” Joan L. Roccasalvo, C.S.J. Week of November 16, 2017 How many times had they prayed in solitude and in public, “Give me your love and your grace. It is all I need?” A thousand times? In the end, they had no time to utter lengthy prayers, perhaps not even this final verse of St. Ignatius’ self-offering. Leisurely, they had prayed it for years. Now they were suddenly called on to live it in death. In the stealth of night, in those early hours of November 16th, 1989, six Jesuits were prodded from a deep sleep and dragged out of their beds to the grounds of their University of Central America. That moment had come when the prayer of self-giving would ask of them a final Yes. They were not entirely caught by surprise. Their residence had been visited a few days before. It was a warning as though to say: ‘Teach, but stay out of our business.’ Of all people, a young student of the Jesuit high school was enlisted to execute in cold blood six Jesuits, their cook and her daughter: Ignacio Ellacuría, the University Rector, an internationally known philosopher and tireless in his efforts to promote peace through his writings, conferences and travels abroad; . They also split open his head and spread his brains on the grass to make it clear why he had been killed. They certainly understood the symbolism of the head, the seat of the intellect. Gabrielli All rights reserved 2014 iii ABSTRACT SOLIDARITY MEDIATION IN THE FRENCH STREAM OF MYSTICAL BODY OF CHRIST THEOLOGY Name: Gabrielli, Timothy R. University of Dayton Advisor: William L. Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.
