RAFFA, The University of Texas at Austin The approach of the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death is a propi- tious time to recall the events that drove him from his native Florence and marked his life in various Italian cities before he found his final refuge in Ra- venna, where he died and was buried in 1321. Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. The poet’s politically-motivated exile, this biographical essay shows, was destined to become one of the world’s most fortunate misfortunes. Hornbake This dissertation is an exploration of associational life in central Italy, an examination of organizations that were central to the everyday experience of tens of thousands of Italians at a time when social, economic and geographical transformations were upending their everyday lives, 1945-1968. This dissertation examines facets of these transformations: the changing shape of cities, increasing mobility of people, technological changes that made possible new media and new cultural forms, from the perspective of local associations.     HISTORICAL WRITING AND COMMUNITY AMONG THE ORTI ORICELLARI by Heather Stein A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland September 14, 2015 Abstract My research interprets the specific context in which Florentine humanist historians of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth century wrote: the social, political and intellectual world that informed authors’ conceptions of history and how historical texts functioned in that world. Historical writing is the crucial link between Renaissance humanism and statescraft. In response to recent calls for a more actor-centred approach to problems of the state by scholars such as Pieroangelo Schiera, I demonstrate that by the early sixteenth century, the ten Florentine humanists and governors (Bernardo Rucellai, Giovanni Corsi, Pietro Crinito, Francesco da Diacceto, Francesco Vettori, Piero Martelli, Giovanni Canacci, Bartolomeo Fontius, Cosimo Pazzi and Bindaccio Ricasoli) who met regularly in Bernardo Rucellai’s eponymous gardens to discuss matters of politics and culture adopted a new philosophy of history that steered away from divine intervention in the secular world. Their historical philosophy focused instead on the human experience and emotional response to the spilling out of the violence of the battlefield into the population. My study situates the historical writing of the late-fifteenth and early- sixteenth century in the context of the Italian Wars and the developments in political thought leading up to the landmark publication of Machiavelli’s Il principe.     ‘Victims of the Same Destiny’: Italy in the Postcolonial, the Postcolonial in Italy Thomas James Langley Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics Newcastle University September 2015 ii Abstract This thesis concentrates on a series of canonical Italian anti-Fascist writers, and argues that their work is informed and underpinned by an engagement with colonialism. Working between Italian and English, the thesis establishes an original framework for comparative reading, in which it traces neglected lines of literary influence and networks of intellectual and political dialogue between Italian and Indian writers in the inter-war and post-war periods. The first chapter explores the contours of the ‘anti-colonial imagination’ underpinning the work of Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. Focusing particularly on his lesser-known and often un-translated pre-prison writings, it suggests that the critical terminology for which he has become best known in postcolonial studies emerges as part of his gradual elaboration of an anti-colonial position. The second chapter looks at the ways in which Ignazio Silone’s novel Fontamara represents Fascism as a form of internal colonialism, before moving on to think about the significance of its influence on Raja Rao’s Kanthapura and what the implications of this line of influence might be for our understanding of what defines postcolonial writing. The third chapter turns to the work of Carlo Levi, and argues that his lifelong commitment to exposing the internal colonization of the Italian South forms part of a broader anti-colonial commitment that carries him to India and brings him into dialogue with writers like Mulk Raj Anand.

Hanawalt Advisor History Graduate Program Professor Terri Hessler ABSTRACT From the death of every pope until the election of his successor in the early modern era, the entire bureaucratic and judicial apparatus of the state in Rome and the Papal States effectively ceased to function. During this interregnum, known as the sede vacante (literally, “the vacant see”), violence and disorder dramatically increased as the papal government temporarily lost its control over the populace and its monopoly of violence. The College of Cardinals and local civic governments throughout the Papal States, authorities deputized to regulate affairs during sede vacante, failed to quell the upsurge of violence that commenced immediately upon the pope’s death. Contemporary observers and modern scholars have labeled the violence of sede vacante as meaningless and irrational. I argue, rather, that this period of unrest gave Romans and subjects of the Papal States an opportunity to perform actions increasingly forbidden by the centralizing papal government—and thus ultimately to limit the power of the government and prevent the development of the papacy into an absolute monarchy. Acting as individuals or as collectivities, Romans and papal subjects sought revenge against old enemies, attacked hated outsiders, criticized papal policies, and commented on the papal election.

Combining an analysis of the Italian publishing market and a study of some socio-cultural dynamics that have affected the world of politics, the judiciary, and the media in the last thirty-forty years of Italian history, this dissertation tries to explain the fortune of crime fiction abandoning purely stylistic, psychologizing and sociologizing approaches. In this sense, crime fiction is seen as a point of contact between instances and powers capable of shedding light on some critical dynamics of contemporary Italian society, such as social fears, the institutional clash between state powers, the media’s role in modern trials. It emerges that crime fiction, being an enormously varied and profoundly flexible genre, is directly related to all these aspects. Although this link with reality influences a large part of contemporary crime fiction production, it is particularly evident in the work of many real-life magistrates, police officers, and investigative journalists who have turned into successful crime fiction writers.
