Lawrence Witzleben Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, Chair. This thesis examines current developments in the research and discourse on music and healing. Ethnomusicology has involved extensive work on documenting traditional music and healing traditions; however, ethnomusicologists have neglected to contribute their knowledge and effort to healthcare-oriented research. Music therapy, on the other hand, has been focusing on the benefit of the patient, but rarely relates its practices to traditional music and healing traditions or non-Western music. Despite the recent establishment of the Medical Ethnomusicology Special Interest Group in the Society for Ethnomusicology and increasing awareness of world music and cultural diversity in music therapy, scholars in the two fields have not yet collaborated with each other extensively. The motivations for this thesis are: to review previous developments in research on music and healing, to find out the reasons for the changes in the research trends of the past decade, and to see possible research directions in the future. In this monoGraph, I treat the nursinG home as an artificially constructed community in order to examine the role of music in daily life for the people to who live in, work at, and visit the Home. Particular attention is paid to the role of songwriting in an institution, the role of the sing-along for its participants, and the role of music and memory in the context of end-stage dementia.     Draft Syllabus Subject To Change 1 Music and Madness Carmel Raz This undergraduate seminar offers historical, critical, and cross-cultural perspectives on music as a cause, symptom, and treatment of madness. The course is intended to foster interdisciplinary engagement between students interested in music, medicine, literature, philosophy, and anthropology, and to provide them with critical tools to examine constructions of music and altered mental states in social, scientific, and historical contexts. In every class, we will investigate a number of approaches to a given mental state by discussing readings by musicologists, ethnomusicologists, historians, disability studies, and medico-scientific researchers. No musical background or skills are necessary to participate. In addition to an in-depth presentation of readings in class (approximately corresponding to one reading in each disciplinary area), students will complete occasional brief responses and quizzes, and will submit a final research paper. Assignments and Grading Breakdown: 1. Final paper (ca. 15-20 pages) and presentation (40% of grade) 2. Active class participation (25% of grade) • Come to class prepared to critique the readings assigned each class. 3. Written responses / quizzes (10% of grade) 4.   • Altered State of Consciousness (ASC)
    Sound Affects: Sound Therapy, Altered States of Consciousness and Improved Health and Wellbeing by Lyz Cooper MA, MSc, FICNM Abstract A study using a specific method of sound therapy (Himalayan singing bowls, transitioning to Gongs, transitioning to crystal singing bowls, transitioning to therapeutic percussion) was delivered in two ways – by a live soundbath, where subjects lay on the floor and received around 35 minutes of sound, and by a recording of the same which was available online. The focus of this research was to answer the following questions. 1. Is live sound more or less effective than digitally recorded and delivered sound and across what domains? 2. What are the consciousness altering effects of this method and to what degree are the domains effected? 3. What are the therapeutic benefits of sound induced ASC? Data was analysed by a test known as a Chi Square analysis to gauge significance. Statistically significant, highly significant and extremely significant data was produced in the domains of Physical Relaxation, Imagery, Ineffability, Transcendence of Time and Space, Positive Mood, Insightfulness, Disembodiment and Unity across both live and recorded studies. These findings have far-reaching implications for the use of sound therapy, specifically sound induced altered states of consciousness (ASC) going forward. Introduction and Context Over a 20 year period of working with therapeutic sound using techniques developed by myself, many people receiving sound therapy treatments have received benefit from life-limiting health issues such as anxiety dis-orders, chronic pain, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome to name a few. The thousands of case studies undertaken by our students and the team at The British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST) have highlighted common experiences that individuals receiving treatments and relaxation sessions share.

    SOCIETY FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY ETHICS COMMITTEE STATEMENT ON INSTITUTIONAL REVIEWS BOARDS (IRB) INTRODUCTION This statement represents the Society for Ethnomusicology’s (henceforth SEM) position regarding the IRB review process and is intended to help IRB panels understand the nature of ethnomusicological research and to help ethnomusicologists understand the purpose of IRB requirements. SEM understands that the IRB review process is designed to ensure that research is conducted at the highest possible standard and held to the highest levels of ethical integrity, but that, in some circumstances, IRB requirements do not adequately accommodate practical exigencies of ethnomusicological research. The research paradigms and administrative protocol enshrined in IRB review processes are based on the need to protect subjects and animals in medical and social research and are based on Westernized moral and legal foundations. In some circumstances, these paradigms and protocols may be contrary to appropriate ethical behaviors in cross-cultural contexts or the moral values of research participants and field interlocutors. While SEM recognizes the value of a process aimed at ensuring that appropriate ethical standards are maintained, SEM is concerned that IRB processes may in some cases be unduly unsympathetic toward ethnomusicological research practice. This document seeks to facilitate a common understanding between IRB members and ethnomusicologists as to what the appropriate interface between IRBs and ethnomusicologist might look like. SEM recognizes the need to respect and protect the rights of research participants and those of researchers. Because concepts and types of research, research practices, research participants, consent, confidentiality, and authorship differ between disciplines and fields, the quality of research and the wellbeing of the individuals and communities involved is best ensured by field-specific ethics oversight.

MEDICAL MUSIC: ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON MUSIC THERAPY by STEPHEN McMASTERS Under the Direction of Steven P. Black, PhD ABSTRACT Music-based healing is utilized as a healing tool in many cultural contexts around the world. This thesis examines the cultural practice of music therapy in the context of the larger discipline of medicine in the United States through an ethnographic study of music therapists in the Greater Atlanta area. It contextualizes this data with research in medical ethnomusicology that explores cross-cultural traditions of music in healing rituals. It also connects music therapy to the observation that forces of globalization are strongly correlated with an increase in rates of inequality, poverty, stress, and disease. This thesis discusses how Atlanta-area music therapists use music healing with patients suffering from physical and mental disease and how economic stratification impacts access to music therapy. It is concerned with deeper and not immediately evident processes taking place in music therapy, such as the role of music as a medium and facilitator in healing.
