DEFINITION AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT Berkman Regulator and Hydroelectric Power Plant is located 11 km to the northwest of Osmaniye Province, within the borders of Central District and on the Ceyhan River. The approximate head is 21 m between the upstream Aslanta ş Dam and HEPP and downstream Cevdetiye Irrigation Regulator. This head is planned to be utilized through upstream O şkan HEPP and Berkman HEPP. With an installed power of 3x10 MW, Berkman HEPP will generate 109,93 Gwh/year in total, 49,09 Gwh/year of which is reliable. Turkey is a rich country in terms of hydroelectric energy sources. However, only 11% of annual capacity estimated to be 108,5×10 9 can be used. This is nearly the half of our total annual energy consumption while the rest of it is provided from thermal sources and abroad. Berkman HEPP and upstream O şkan HEPP planned together are two plants which will be established in order to make use of the 21-meter head between Cevdetiye Regulator and Aslanta ş Dam on Ceyhan River. Total annual energy generation of the two regulators, each of which have 10,5 m heads, is 219,86 Gwh. This generation occupies an important place within Ceyhan Basin. Inasmuch as the state sector has to undertake investments of large dams, the authority to establish and operate the facilities bearing the quality of this type of “River type Power Plants” which do not require investment was granted to the private sector on 19/12/1984 with Law No. 3096. Berkman HEPP feasibility works desired to be conducted by benefiting from this law are carried out by TEMELSU Mihendislik Limited Şirketi (TEMELSU Engineering Limited Company). BERKMAN Hydroelectric Power Plant EIA Preliminary Survey Report 4 BOZAT INC. 1. NON-TECHNICAL REPORT SUMMARY The construction of Berkman Regulator and Hydroelectric Power Plant on Ceyhan River in the Central District of the Province of Osmaniye is planned by the “PARTNERSHIP OF ÖZALTIN İNŞAAT T İCARET VE SANAY İ A. Ş-NUROL İNŞAAT VE T İCARET A. Ş.” The closest settlement unit to the project area is Kumarlı Village, which is approximately 2,5 km away. Berkman HEPP is a plant which will be established in order to make use of the 21-meter head between Cevdetiye Regulator and Aslanta ş Dam. Construction stage of the project is expected to be completed in 3 years. Timetable on the activity is given in Annex-13. Area of the facility to be established remains outside the borders of adjacent area. While 100 persons will be employed at the construction stage of the Hydroelectric Power Plant, 5 persons will be employed at the operation stage. Within the scope of the project, general needs such as food, shower, WC etc. of the employees at construction stage will be provided from the prefabricated site building to be set up and the same needs will be met at the power house building at the operation stage. Economic life of the facility is reckoned to be 30 years depending on the changing and advancing technology. With the hydroelectric power plant constructed through this project, energy requirement of the Region that cannot be met will be satisfied to a large extent. With the advancing industrialization, the need for energy, which is already scarce, increases. For this reason, energy requirement of the industrialists and the whole region will be largely met thanks to the HEPP to be constructed. BERKMAN Hydroelectric Power Plant EIA Preliminary Survey Report 5 BOZAT INC. 2. PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS a) Capacity of the Project and the Area Covered by the Project etc. Berkman Regulator Project area is approximately 11 km to the northwest of Osmaniye Province, upstream of Cevdetiye Dam and around Sarpına ğzı and Kumarlı Villages. Coordinates of location of Berkman Regulator are 37° 16' north latitude and 36° 54' east longitude. In terms of topographical appearance, the land looks like Çukurova in regions between the sea and slopes that face onto the sea and like typical Central Anatolia in upper parts. Total basin area is 14.842km 2. With an installed power of 3×10 MW, Berkman HEPP will generate 109,93 Gwh/year in total, 49,09 Gwh/year of which is reliable. Properties of Berkman Hydroelectric Power Plant are given in Table-2.a.1. BERKMAN Hydroelectric Power Plant EIA Preliminary Survey Report 6 BOZAT INC. Development of these sectors gives rise to new energy and water requirements. Ceyhan River emerges as one of the closest sources to consumption centres. The most significant facilities among the ones that have been put into operation on Ceyhan River is Aslantaş Dam and HEPP. This facility carries the purpose of irrigation, flood protection and energy and has an installed power of 3x46MW. Its elevation from the base is 95m, elevation from riverbed is 78m and it is an earth fill-type dam. Kartalkaya Dam planned for irrigation is on the Aksu branch of Ceyhan River, is in operation also. This earth-fill type Dam has an elevation of 57 m from the base while it is 56 m from the riverbed.

Turkey: Background and U.S. Relations Updated November 9, 2020 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R41368 SUMMARY R41368 Turkey: Background and U.S. Relations November 9, 2020 U.S.-Turkey tensions have raised questions about the future of bilateral relations and have led to congressional action against Turkey, including informal holds on major new Jim Zanotti arms sales (such as upgrades to F-16 aircraft) and efforts to impose sanctions. Specialist in Middle Nevertheless, both countries’ officials emphasize the importance of continued U.S.- Eastern Affairs Turkey cooperation and Turkey’s membership in NATO. Observers voice concerns about the largely authoritarian rule of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Clayton Thomas Turkey’s polarized electorate could affect Erdogan’s future leadership. His biggest Analyst in Middle Eastern challenge may be structural weaknesses in Turkey’s economy—including a sharp Affairs decline in Turkey’s currency—that have worsened since the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic began. The following are key factors in the U.S.-Turkey relationship. Turkey’s strategic orientation and U.S./NATO basing. Traditionally, Turkey has relied closely on the United States and NATO for defense cooperation, European countries for trade and investment, and Russia and Iran for energy imports. A number of complicated situations in Turkey’s surrounding region—including those involving Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh (a region disputed by Armenia and Azerbaijan), and Eastern Mediterranean energy exploration—affect its relationships with the United States and other key actors, as Turkey seeks a more independent role. President Erdogan’s concerns about maintaining his parliamentary coalition with Turkish nationalists may partly explain his actions in some of the situations mentioned above.

  • The Tropical Fig Borer, Batocera Rufomaculata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), New for Turkey
The Tropical Fig Borer, Batocera rufomaculata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), new for Turkey by Göksel Tozlu and Hikmet Özbek Abstract: The Tropical Fig Borer, Batocera rufomaculata (De Geer, 1775) is recorded from the eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey as a genus, species and a fig pest new for Turkey. The material collected and the views of some growers suggest that B. rufomaculata was probably in- troduced to Turkey from Israel, Lebanon, Syria or Iraq in the 1970s. Key words: Batocera rufomaculata, Cerambycidae, fig borer, new record, new pest, alien spe- cies, Turkey, Middle East. Introduction The Tropical Fig Borer, Batocera rufomaculata (De Geer, 1775), has a tropical distribution, extending from southern China through Malaya, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Mauritius to eastern Africa (AVIDOV & HARPAZ 1969, KATBEH-BADER 1996). This pest species was introduced into Israel in 1949 (AVIDOV & HARPAZ 1969) and into Jordan in the 1940s (KAT- BEH-BADER 1996). Following this, HEYROVSKY (1963) recorded the presence of this species in Jordan in 1957. Although HALPERIN & HOLZSCHUH (1993) indicated that B. rufomaculata has been disappearing in Israel since the 1970s, more recently KATBEH-BADER (pers.

The gonadosomatic index, somatic condition, oocyte size, and fecundity were calculated on a monthly basis. Reading of scales indicated that the maximum age was 4+ years for A. mossulensis and A. marmid. The estimated length–weight relationships were W = 0.206 × FL2.065 for females and W = 0.119 × FL2.138 for males in A. mossulensis, and W 2.678 2.631 –0.14(t + 1.39) = 0.029 × FL for females and W = 0.030 × FL for males in A. marmid. Growth in length equations were Lt = 19.6[1 – e ] –1.40(t + 1.04) –1.37(t + 1.04) –1.29(t + 1.04) for females and Lt = 20.1[1 – e ] for males in A. mossulensis and Lt = 17.3[1 – e ] for females and Lt = 16.6[1 – e ] for males in A.
