We have tried to make the dire tory easy to use, listing material by category and type of material. Categories includc instructional packages, issues analysis, primary information, and theory & practice of development education. Definitions of these categories appear in the Guidelines for Selecting Instructional Resources for NCoDE Database, on next page. Types of material include audio-visuals, books, curriculum units, kits, etc. In our index, we cross-referenced the resources by theme and region. While some materials could be indexed in many themes, we listed them in no more than two in order to avoid duplication. There are 250 annotated resources in the directory, of use to teachers, and all those engaged in educating about international development issues. In addition to the directory, we disseminate this information on a quarterly basis in NCoDE Resources, a newsletter supplement published in ACCESS (The American Forum's newsletter) and Ideas and Information about Development Education (co-sponsored by Inter Action, International Development Conference, and NCoDE). Annotations are provided for information only and in no way imply the Clearinghouse's endorsement. Annotations were written by TIE- American Forum staff based on resource submission forms which were completed by authors or publishers. While we have included the latest information available on prices and costs, these are subject to change and we encourage you to contact the publisher before ordering. Similarly, addresses and telephone numbers change, but they can usually be obtained through calling information. A word about our choice of terms... The terms used for defining topics were selected according to the UNbis Thesaurus (United Nations Bibliographic Information System), and for their definitions we recommend that you refer to the United Nations Macro-Thesaurus. Within annotations, you will notice that we preferred the terms "South" or "Southern" to other terms such as 'Third World," and "developing" when referring to areas of the world in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. While "South/ern" has its own limitations, it seems that it is preferred by our friends from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as expressed by NGO representatives from these parts of the world at numerous Inter Action Annual Fora. We invite your comments and suggestions for our next edition. The editors. GUIDELINES Selecting Instructional Resources for NCoDE Database The National Clearinghouse on Development Education (NCoDE) is developing a database of materials and resources for teaching a variety of audiences about development. The following information is provided to help individuals and organizations determine which of their materials are appropriate for submission to the database. How does the clearinghouse define Development Education? In determining the appropriateness of materials and programs for our database, we use the following definition of development education: "Development Education has as a primary goal the building of a committed constituency for development at home and abroad.It begins with a recognition of global interdependence and the continuing need for justice and equity in the world. Its programs and processes convey information, promote humanitarian values, and stimulate individual and community action aimed at improving the quality of life and eliminating the root causes of poverty," from A Framework for Development Education in the United States, Inter Action,1984. What goals will materials in the database reflect? We will include materials which are consistent with our definition and aimed at engendering a better understanding of the developing world and of the economic, social, political and cultural parameters of development.These resources will have different objectives including, but not limited to: * providing information on development issues such as aid, debt, trade, health, education, agriculture, hunger, population, the environment, human rights, appropriate technology, etc. fostering understanding of global interdependence, including the role of the industrialized world, and in particular, the U.S. in North-South relations, developing skills in analysis of development problems and solutions, promoting values and attitudes of respect for cultural differences and cooperation, motivating people to take actions to alleviate problems associated with underdevelopment. What kinds of resources will be included in the database? Resources will be selected in the following categories: Category 1: Instructional packages explicitly designed for teaching about development. These materials will both provide information and include instructional strategies.Examples:curriculum guides, workbooks, videos and films with discussion guides, maps, atlases, and wall charts with teaching guides, etc. Category 2: Resources that can be used by development educators to develop their own instructional

    What’s in a Name #5 Turner Alley #401 Chartered July 28, 1969 Cedar Rapids #5 Turner Alley is perhaps the most widely recognized address in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is the site of a garage loft, which served as home and studio for Grant Wood during the time when the painter created his most famous works. “American Gothic” which brought immediate fame to Wood in 1930, and “Daughters of the Revolution,” both fine examples of Wood’s sensitive use of satire, were painted at #5 Turner Alley. In fact, the ten years he lived there were the painter’ most productive. Best known as a regionalist painter, Wood portrayed Midwestern rural life in many of his works. However, time, energy and inventiveness he expended in making a home at #5 Turner Alley prove that Wood could create in a great variety of media. Wood created a Spanish style home for himself and his widowed mother along with a workshop/studio for himself at #5 Turner Alley. Aided by some of his art students, Wood grooved, sanded, painted and lacquered the floorboards to represent tile. Wood himself hewed the beams and rough-plastered the walls, did the wrought iron work even to forging the iron, designed and made the time-table front door, and invented, perhaps the only fireplace made from a metal bushel basket turned upside down and used as a cowl. The sunken bathtub at #5 Turner Alley was a compromise. Grant Wood wanted a shower, his mother wanted a tub. Therefore, Wood devised a clever system for both.

  • Lou Henry Hoover
    LOU HENRY HOOVER Juliette Low invested Lou Henry Hoover as a Girl Scout in 1917. From then until the end of her life, Lou Henry Hoover was actively engaged in the Girl Scout movement. She was a leader of Troop 8 in Washington, D.C. for ten years; a council member in Palo Alto, California; Chairman of the Girl Scout National Board of Directors; twice elected President of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.; and honorary president when her husband was President of the United States. Although she was interested in all of Girl Scouting, the out-of-doors was her special love. An expert and enthusiastic camper, she was eager for all girls to experience camping. Day camping was introduced into Girl Scouting during Mrs. Hoover’s first term as President of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Lou Henry Hoover’s love of open spaces and of outdoor living developed as a child when she went camping with her father. On these trips she learned facts and legends about rocks, flowers, trees, birds, and animals, in addition to acquiring skills for living in the outdoors. These childhood experiences prompted her to major in geology at Leland Stanford University. There she met Herbert Hoover and later, a year after she graduated in 1898, married him. Mr. Hoover’s work as a mining engineer took them all over the world. Whether living in China, Mandalay, Japan, Australia, Russia, England, or the United States, Lou Henry Hoover always found and kept a nearby outdoor sanctuary. When the Hoovers went to live in the White House, they found a campsite in the wilderness in Virginia.

  • First Ladies As Political Women
    ABSTRACT Title of Disserta tion: FIRST LADIES AS POLITICAL WOMEN: PRESS FRAMING OF PRESIDENTIAL WIVES, 1900 – 2001 Lisa M. Burns, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Shawn J. Parry -Giles Department of Communication University of Maryland This project contends that press framing of the U.S. first lady institution throughout the twentieth century positioned presidential wives as important public women who were presented as models of American womanhood. An analysis of the print news coverage reveals that the first lady institution serves as a site of ideological contestation over women’s public and political roles, reflecting the intersection of gender, publicity, and power at particular historical mome nts. The press practice of gendered framing draws on often competing ideologies of American womanhood, and in doing so shapes the content of news narratives. The subjects of the stories often become representatives of social gender norms. I call this pract ice personification framing, which is the positioning of a well -known individual as the embodiment of a particular ideology. A personification frame serves as an ideological short cut used by journalists to simplify, in the case of first ladies, the comple xities of gender role performance, making such discussions easier to insert into the limited space of a single news story . An outgrowth of personification framing is the emergence of first ladies as public women , gendered celebrities , political activists , and political interlopers , positioning that reflects press representations of women’s public and political roles at various points in U.S. history. The publicity and scrutiny surrounding gendered performances of the first lady position construct boundarie s of empowerment and containment that help to normalize women’s public activity and domestic empowerment while challenging women’s public and private political influence.
