NATIONAL EISENHOWER MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS LESSON Atoms for Peace: Eisenhower and Nuclear Technology Duration One 45-minute period Grades 7–12 Cross-curriculum Application U.S. History, World History, Media Arts NATIONAL EISENHOWER MEMORIAL LESSON: ATOMS FOR PEACE | 1 EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Historical Background The advancement of nuclear technology and the subsequent devastation to Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945 from atomic bombs dropped on them during the final stages of World War II introduced a completely new means of waging war to the world. The fears that Americans associ- ated with nuclear weapons only increased as first the Soviet Union and then communist China developed their own atomic bombs. The issue of nuclear power was not just a problem for America but a global challenge, compli- cated largely by the lack of scientific data regarding military effect and environmental impact. It was within this context that Eisenhower took the unprecedented step of promoting the use of atoms for peace rather than for war. To convince Americans that nuclear power had positive benefits for the country, the federal government under Eisenhower launched a program called “Atoms for Peace.” The program took its name from a stunning speech delivered by Eisenhower to the United Nations General Assembly in 1953. Eisenhower believed that “the only way to win World War III is to prevent it.” He recommended the creation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to help diffuse political tensions and solve the “fearful atomic dilemma” by both monitoring atomic weapons and support- ing research into peaceful uses for atomic energy such as medicine and agriculture. -

13 Collecting Statistical Data 13.1 The Population 13.2 Sampling 13.3 Random Sampling 1.1 - 1 • Polls, studies, surveys and other data collecting tools collect data from a small part of a larger group so that we can learn something about the larger group. • This is a common and important goal of statistics: Learn about a large group by examining data from some of its members. 1.1 - 2 Data collections of observations (such as measurements, genders, survey responses) 1.1 - 3 Statistics is the science of planning studies and experiments, obtaining data, and then organizing, summarizing, presenting, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions based on the data 1.1 - 4 Population the complete collection of all individuals (scores, people, measurements, and so on) to be studied; the collection is complete in the sense that it includes all of the individuals to be studied 1.1 - 5 Census Collection of data from every member of a population Sample Subcollection of members selected from a population 1.1 - 6 A Survey • The practical alternative to a census is to collect data only from some members of the population and use that data to draw conclusions and make inferences about the entire population. • Statisticians call this approach a survey (or a poll when the data collection is done by asking questions). • The subgroup chosen to provide the data is called the sample, and the act of selecting a sample is called sampling. 1.1 - 7 A Survey • The first important step in a survey is to distinguish the population for which the survey applies (the target population) and the actual subset of the population from which the sample will be drawn, called the sampling frame. -

No question or topic was too large or small for conversations that often carried on into the wee hours of the morning. Caley Horan, Eric Richtmyer, Tim Smit, and Aaron Windel will undoubtedly be lifelong friends, mahjong and euchre partners, fantasy football opponents, kindred spirits at the CC Club and Mortimer’s, and so on. I am especially grateful for the hospitality that Eric and Tim (and Tank the cat) offered during the fall of 2008, as I moved back and forth between Syracuse and Minneapolis. Aaron and I had the fortune of living in New York City at the same time in our graduate careers, and I have fond memories of our walks around Stuyvesant Park in the East Village and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and our time spent with the folks of Tuesday night. Although we did not solve all of the world’s problems, we certainly tried. Living in Brooklyn, I also had the opportunity to participate in the short-lived yet productive “Brooklyn Scholars of Domestic Service” (AKA the BSDS crew) reading group with Vanessa May and Lara Vapnek. -

As Wisconsin soldiers demobilized, policymakers reevaluated the meaning of wartime service—and fiercely debated how the state should recognize veterans’ sacrifices. BY JILLIAN SLAIGHT he Great War seemed strangely distant to Ira Lee Peterson, even as his unit camped mere miles from the front lines in France. Between drills and marches, the twenty-two-year-old Wisconsinite swam in streams, wrote letters home, and slept underneath the stars in apple orchards.
