CHAPTER ONE BEFORE 1880, THROUGH EXCUSES ONLY She is in the swim, but not of it. —Journalist magazine In 1890, only 4 percent of American journalists were women, and percentages in other writing fields were even lower.Those few who made a serious com- mitment to writing found their course severely constrained—by their educa- tion, family responsibilities, social codes, and isolation from other writers. Because of these limited freedoms and connections, American women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries wrote by relying on some form of justifi- cation or rationalization, which varied with the decades, and they usually wrote professionally for only part of their adulthood. Cast in the insubstantial role of Non-Writer, a subset of the care-giving Woman, these writers were meant to address only women readers on narrowly defined women’s topics such as home- making while the genres and pronouncements of male Writers were shaping American intellectual culture. Although their choices were few, for women working within a patriarchal system without supportive networks or groups, these excuses and restrictive definitions did provide some space for writing. DURING THE COLONIAL PERIOD In the colonial period, women’s labor was frequently needed, in towns and certainly on the frontier, and it provided their means of securing a living when 1 2 A GROUP OF THEIR OWN left without father or husband. Some better educated single women and wid- ows worked in journalism—writing, editing, printing, and distributing news- papers while also taking on contract printing jobs. Chapter One Introduction to the Study In the spring of 1989, a 9-year-old boy was gunned down in the streets of a major city in The United States. The horror of this homicide was that both the victim and the assailant were children. During the 1980s this city, like most other large urban cities, was besieged by a growing number of violent acts: assaults, thefts, rapes, homicides, suicides, hate crimes, extortions, and destructions of property, but the murder of this young child became the catalyst which propelled specific action. In this case, a community educational organization called The Cottage Family and Child Care Center, which is the subject of this study, was created. Curcio and First (1993) write that “we can do more than just cope” in our “efforts to proactively defuse and prevent violence” (p. 50). As an antidote to growing violence in our schools and communities, they support the concept of community involvement and the relatively new notion of full-service schools (p. 35). School-linked services, full-service schools, or school community connections are terms which have been surfacing during the last decade and mean different things to people, depending upon their background and experience. While recognizing the semantic challenge that exists and the diversity of actual program designs represented by these terms, some commonality is beginning to surface in the literature. Adler (1994) identifies a number of common threads that weave through various definitions of school-linked or community-linked services: neighborhood accessibility, collaboration for holistic purposes, prevention rather than crises orientation, new systems, flexibility of funding, staff development, and system-wide changes (p. -

It is an expectant, exciting time – a promise kept by the Constitution for a better future. Rituals developed over time and became traditions of presidential hopefuls – the campaign slogans and songs, hundreds of speeches, thousands of handshakes, the countless miles of travel across the country to meet voters - all reported by the ever-present media. The candidate must do a balancing act as leader and entertainer to influence the American voters. Today the potential first spouse is expected to be involved in campaign issues, and her activities are as closely scrutinized as the candidate’s. However, these women haven’t always been an official part of the ritual contest. Campaigning for her husband’s run for the presidency is one of the biggest self-sacrifices a First Lady want-to-be can make. The commitment to the campaign and the road to election night are simultaneously exhilarating and exhausting. In the early social norms of this country, the political activities of a candidate’s wife were limited. Nineteenth-century wives could host public parties and accept social invitations. She might wave a handkerchief from a window during a “hurrah parade” or quietly listen to a campaign speech behind a closed door. She could delight the crowd by sending them a winsome smile from the front porch campaign of her own home. But she could not openly show knowledge of politics and she could not vote. As the wife of a newly-elected president, her media coverage consisted of the description of the lovely gown she wore to the Inaugural Ball. -
