Boston College From European Anti-Jesuitism to German Anti-Jewishness: A Tale of Two Texts “Jews and Jesuits will move heaven and hell against you.” --Kurt Lüdecke, in conversation with Adolf Hitleri A Presentation at the Conference “Honoring Stanislaw Musial” Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland (March 5, 2009) The current intense debate about the significance of “political religion” as a mode of analyzing fascism leads us to the core of the crisis in understanding the Holocaust.ii Saul Friedländer has written of an “historian‟s paralysis” that “arises from the simultaneity and the interaction of entirely heterogeneous phenomena: messianic fanaticism and bureaucratic structures, pathological impulses and administrative decrees, archaic attitudes within an advanced industrial society.”iii Despite the conflicting voices in the discussion of political religion, the debate does acknowledge two relevant facts: the obvious intermingling in Nazism of religious and secular phenomena; secondly, the underestimated role exercised by Munich Catholicism in the early life of the Nazi party.iv My essay is an effort to illumine one thread in this complex territory of political religion and Nazism and my title conveys its hypotheses. First, that the centuries long polemic against the Roman Catholic religious order the Jesuits, namely, its fabrication of the Jesuit image as cynical corrupter of Christianity and European culture, provided an important template for the Nazi imagining of Jewry after its emancipation.v This claim will be exhibited in a consideration of two historically influential texts: the Monita 1 secreta which demonized the Jesuits and the Protocols of the Sages of Zion which diabolized the Jews.vi In the light of this examination, I shall claim that an intermingled rhetoric of Jesuit and Jewish wills to power operated in the imagination of some within the Nazi leadership, the most important of whom was Adolf Hitler himself. -
The Twenty-First Crossroad
THE TWENTY-FIRST CROSSROAD Christ's Church has existed now for almost two thousand years. Church history tells us that within this vast length of time only twenty ecumenical councils· have taken place. We are indeed fortunate that the twenty-first ecumenical council wili convene during our life-time. For as Lorenz Jaeger, Archbishop of Paderborn and a member of the preparatory commission for the Second Vatican Council, has stated, "councils are always held at the great crossroads in the Church's history." Christianity is now approach ing one of these great crossroads. Centuries have often gone by from one ecumenical council to another as indeed happened between the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century and the First Vatican Council in the nineteenth. And in our own time, ninety years have elapsed since the Piedmontese army forced the First Vatican Council to a premature close in 1870. Perhaps as a result of this great lapse of,time, we of the twentieth century have often come to look upon ecumenical councils. as instruments which have been very useful and necessary to tlie Church in past ages, but which are no longer needed in the present se.t-u'p of the Church. Some have felt that the definition of papal infaliibility in matters of faith and morals, the high-point of the First Vatican Council, makes future ecumenical councils superfluous. If the pope cannot err when he speaks ex cathedra, what need is there for the lengthy discussions which often occur in an ecumenical council? Reviewed by Todd Weir (Queen's University, Belfast) Published on H-German (November, 2010) Commissioned by Benita Blessing Was the Early NSDAP a Confessional Party? Given the growing number of studies charting the complicity of segments of the Protestant lay and clerical leadership with National Socialism, it comes as no surprise that historians are also turning up skeletons in the closet of Germany's Catholic community. What is surprising about Derek Hastings's monograph is the time frame he charts for Catholic complicity with the Nazi movement. Whereas the course of Protestant entanglement appears as an ascending line through the final phase of the Weimar Republic, Hastings argues that Catholic involvement with the Nazi movement was substantial and even critical in the first years of the movement, until relations soured in the run-up to and aftermath of the "Beer Hall Putsch" of October 1923. Thereafter both the NSDAP and the Catholic Church were happy to sweep the memory of this interlude under the carpet. Hastings begins his study by alerting the reader to the peculiarities of Catholic politics in Bavaria, and particularly in its capital. Although predominantly Catholic, the voters of Munich gave the Center Party a scant 15.9 percent of their votes in the Reichstag election of 1912. -

THE HOLOCAUST AND THE SEARCH FOR FORGIVENESS An Invitation to the Society of jesus? Pope John Paul II has led the Church into a new era in its relationship with the Jewish Community. Progress rests on painstaking efforts to uncover the truth, identify failures where they exist, and humbly seek forgiveness. Recent scholarship presents a complex picture in Europe both before and immediately after the Second World War, both in the local churches and at the Vatican. Such can dor prompts a question: Should the Society of Jesus, serving its own role in the universal Church, review its own history during this dark period, and where neces sary, join in the Churclis search for forgiveness? ear the beginning of the new millennium, Pope John N Paul II made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and prayed at Judaism's most holy site, the Western Wall of Herod's Tem ple. -
Sacramental Theology and the World Church
SACRAMENTAL THEOLOGY AND THE WORLD CHURCH In the last decade or two of his life, Karl Rahner detected the emergent reality of a new era in the history of the Church and, whether consequently or antecedantly, in the history of the world.1 His idea of an incipient "world Church" was prompted by the specifically Catholic experience of the Second Vatican Council, which brought together in Rome some two thousand bishops from all six continents. Rahner was a European, and more particularly a German-speaking European. His active ecumenism bloomed late: it was practically limited to contacts with Germanic Lutheranism, and it remained to the end rather bookish. For good or ill, my own cultural and ecclesial perspectives differ considerably from Rahner's. I am a minister of the British Methodist Church, with whose maternal milk I took in a commitment to ecumenism in its classical Faith and Order form, including the goal of organic unity such as has been achieved or attempted among local and regional churches of different denominations in many parts of the British Commonwealth. I worked for six years as a missionary in French-speaking Equatorial Africa, and for the past five years I have lived in the U.S.A. These differences need to be kept in mind as I seek to interact with Rahner's concept of a world Church, and more particularly from the angle of sacramental theology. The world Church appears first in Rahner's eyes as an historico- geographical phenomenon. But even then it is not merely a matter of extension in time and space. -

D. Cornell University 2011 The dissertation revisits the West German literary scene of the 1960s and 1970s to investigate how two of its Jewish participants, Jean Améry and Wolfgang Hildesheimer, sought to promote ethical responses to the Holocaust. The study incorporates literary analysis and socio-political reflections on the ethics of public life. First, it is an analysis of the relationship between judicial confrontation of the German criminal past, the silence in the wider German cultural sphere in the wake of this confrontation, and the two writers’ efforts to expose and address this ethical disconnect (chapter I). Second, it draws attention to two very different modes of reactive affect, ressentiment and melancholia. Through readings of Hildesheimer’s novels Tynset (1965) and Masante (1973) in chapters II and III, on the one hand, and Améry’s essay “Ressentiments” (1966) and the essay-novel Lefeu oder Der Abbruch (1974) in chapters IV and V, on the other, the dissertation analyzes these two modes. Hildesheimer employed a register of ethical writing that articulated the interconnected processes of mourning and melancholia, but unlike recent scholarship that focuses on these categories and valorizes melancholia as source of productive socio-political action, Hildesheimer did not prescribe them as exemplary modes of affective reparation. -
