Stahnisch (Guest Editor)1 Abstract: The processes of long-term migration of physicians and scholars affect both the academic migrants and their receiving environments in often dramatic ways. On the one side, their encounter confronts two different knowledge traditions and personal values. On the other side, migrating scientists and academics are also confronted with foreign institutional, political, economic, and cultural frameworks when trying to establish their own ways of professional knowledge and cultural adjustments. The twentieth century has been called the century of war and forced migration: it witnessed two devastating World Wars, which led to an exodus of physicians, scientists, and academics. Nazism and Fascism in the 1930s and 1940s, forced thousands of scientists and physicians away from their home institutions based in Central and Eastern Europe. “Did you ever go half way …” was a central question that all of them had to align with their personal consciousness, their family bonding, and the relationship to their academic peers. No one could leave without finding their individual answers to this existential question that lay at the bottom of their professional and scientific lives. Following this general theme, the current special issue particularly reflects on the personal stories and institutional narratives of German-speaking scientists and physicians to North America since the 1930s, as a relevant case study from twentieth-century history of medicine and science. By drawing on diaries, questionnaires, institutional histories (including those of the Max Planck Society among others), novels, and personal estates, this special issue as a whole intends to emphasize the impact of forced migration from a North-American perspective by describing the general research topic; showing how the personal lives of many of these individuals were intertwined with their careers and choices of scientific topics, projects, and personal destinies. Moreover, this special issue seeks to explore whether new historiographical approaches can provide a deeper understanding of the impact of European émigré psychiatrists, psychologists, and cognitive scientists on emerging fields of medicine and science, including community and geriatric medicine, developmental neuroscience, and psychiatric traumatology 1 Afffiliation: Dr. Frank W. Further papers were delivered collectively as “Personal Stories and Institutional Narratives from German-speaking Émigré Physicians, Scientists, and Academics between the 1930s and the 1960s.” This constituted a themed panel held on 30 May 2016 in conjunction with the annual meetings of the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) and the Canadian Historical Association (CHA). It was organized under the overall aegis of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences through the generous support of an Interdisciplinary Session Award to the Guest Editor as Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee.     BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Most of the sources on German history from 1890 to the end of the Weimar Republic are of use in a study of Maximilian Har­ den. In the following paragraphs are noted, besides the un­ published sources, only the published materials that deal directly with Harden, and the general works or monographs on the period that have been used most extensively. Many works cited in the text are not listed here; a complete reference to each one is found in its first citation. The indispensable source of information on Harden is the magazine he edited from 1892 until 1922. The one hundred and eighteen volumes of the Zukunft contain the bulk of his essays, commentaries, and trial records, as well as many private letters to and from him. The Zukunft was the inspiration or the source for Harden's principal pamphlets and books, namely Kampfge­ nosse Sudermann (Berlin, 1903); KopJe (4 vols., Berlin, 1911-1924); Krieg und Friede (2 vols., Berlin, 1918); and Von Versailles nach Versailles (Hellerau, 1927). Even Deutschland, Frankreich und England (Berlin, 1923), written after the Zukun}t had ceased publication, was in large a repetition of Zukunft articles. Harden's earliest work, Berlin als Theaterhauptstadt (Berlin, 1889), consisted in part of pieces he had written for Die Nation. Apostata (Berlin, 1892), Apostata, neue Folge (Berlin, 1892), andLiteraturund Theater (Berlin, 1896), were collections of his essays from Die Gegenwart. The Gegenwart and the other magazines for which he wrote before 1892 - Die Nation, Die Kunstwart, and M agazin fur Litteratur - are also indispensable sources. Harden's published writings also include articles in other German and foreign newspapers and magazines.

    HEINRICH BEHMANN'S 1921 LECTURE ON THE DECISION PROBLEM AND THE ALGEBRA OF LOGIC PAOLO MANCOSU AND RICHARD ZACH Abstract. Heinrich Behmann (1891{1970) obtained his Habilitation under David Hilbert in G¨ottingenin 1921 with a thesis on the decision problem. In his thesis, he solved|independently of L¨owenheim and Skolem's earlier work|the decision prob- lem for monadic second-order logic in a framework that combined elements of the algebra of logic and the newer axiomatic approach to logic then being developed in G¨ottingen. In a talk given in 1921, he outlined this solution, but also presented important programmatic remarks on the significance of the decision problem and of decision procedures more generally. The text of this talk as well as a partial English translation are included. x1. Behmann's Career. Heinrich Behmann was born January 10, 1891, in Bremen. In 1909 he enrolled at the University of T¨ubingen. There he studied mathematics and physics for two semesters and then moved to Leipzig, where he continued his studies for three semesters. In 1911 he moved to G¨ottingen,at that time the most important center of mathematical activity in Germany. He volunteered for military duty in World War I, was severely wounded in 1915, and returned to G¨ottingenin 1916. In 1918, he obtained his doctorate with a thesis titled The Antin- omy of Transfinite Numbers and its Resolution by the Theory of Russell and Whitehead [Die Antinomie der transfiniten Zahl und ihre Aufl¨osung durch die Theorie von Russell und Whitehead] under the supervision of David Hilbert [Behmann 1918].

    SONIC, INFRASONIC, AND ULTRASONIC FREQUENCIES: The Utilisation of Waveforms as Weapons, Apparatus for Psychological Manipulation, and as Instruments of Physiological Influence by Industrial, Entertainment, and Military Organisations. TOBY HEYS A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2011 1 ABSTRACT This study is a trans-disciplinary and trans-historical investigation into civilian and battlefield contexts in which speaker systems have been utilised by the military-industrial and military-entertainment complexes to apply pressure to mass social groupings and the individuated body. Drawing on authors such as historian/sociologist Michel Foucault, economist Jacques Attali, philosopher Michel Serres, political geographer/urban planner Edward Soja, musician/sonic theorist Steve Goodman, and cultural theorist/urbanist Paul Virilio, this study engages a wide range of texts to orchestrate its arguments. Conducting new strains of viral theory that resonate with architectural, neurological, and political significance, this research provides new and original analysis about the composition of waveformed geography. Ultimately, this study listens to the ways in which the past and current utilisation of sonic, infrasonic, and ultrasonic frequencies as weapons, apparatus for psychological manipulation, and instruments of physiological influence, by industrial, civilian, entertainment, and military organisations, predict future techniques of socio­ spatialised organisation. In chapter one it is argued that since the inception of wired radio speaker systems into U.S. industrial factories in 1922, the development of sonic strategies based primarily on the scoring of architectonic spatiality, cycles of repetition, and the enveloping dynamics of surround sound can be traced to the sonic torture occurring in Guantanamo Bay during the first decade of the twenty-first century.

This is an exploration of the personal story and intellectual context of Moses Schönfinkel, including extensive new research based on primary sources. December 7, 1920 On Tuesday, December 7, 1920, the Göttingen Mathematics Society held its regular weekly meeting—at which a 32-year-old local mathematician named Moses Schönfinkel with no known previous mathematical publications gave a talk entitled “Elemente der Logik” (“Elements of Logic”). Während der Anteil der deutschen Juden an der Gesamtbevölkerung unter einem (!), in Berlin unter vier (!), Prozent lag, umfasste er bei den Berliner Kassen- und Krankenhausärzten fast die Hälfte. Auch sie waren eher konservativ und deutschnational, viele waren im Ersten Weltkrieg zu dekorierten Frontkämpfern geworden. Staatsbeamter und hauptamtlicher Hochschullehrer zu werden, war aber für sie trotzdem kaum möglich.
