Juli 2013/ Exclusion and Forced Displacement at the Charité: Persecuted Colleagues 1933 - 1945 Since Mendelssohn and Lessing, Berlin had been a city characterized by liberal teachings, in which the presence of Jewish doctors was greater than anywhere else in the territory of the German Reich. In 1933 the percentage of Jews accounted for just 1 % of the total German population. In Berlin, the Jewish population amounted to less than 4 % and yet, within the Berlin Health Service, the number of serving Jewish physicians totaled almost 50%. These doctors tended to be politically conservative in outlook with a strong sense of national identity. Many had served in the First World War and had been decorated for their duties on the front lines. Despite this, it remained extremely difficult for Jewish doctors to become civil servants and full time university tutors. But beyond the realms of university life, there were a great number of Jewish medical colleagues who served as licensed habilitated tutors, private lecturers (PD) and professors (ao) who were affiliated to the Berlin Medical Faculty. These physicians formed half of the medical faculty teaching staff. Persecution of Jewish colleagues began long before 1933. National(social)ist students were increasingly supported by the main student body and this made it progressively impossible for Jewish professors to continue to teach. In addition, directors and heads of institutes were content to issue dismissals for Jewish staff on the 31st of March 1933, before the racial laws came into effect and no concerns regarding the government’s racial policies can be found in faculty protocols. On the contrary, the majority of faculty superiors were quite keen to demonstrate their “loyalty” by issuing dismissals as soon as possible. Following this, teaching licenses were revoked and university professors were thus eliminated from the academic staff body. These were just the first steps towards persecution and extermination of professional existence. Medical unions were also quick to respond to contemporary political views, promptly removing „Jews and Marxists” from their boards and committees. On the 22nd of April 1933 the "activity of non-Aryan physicians and doctors considered to be involved in communist activities” was also prohibited. This meant that doctors who had previously been discharged from hospitals and institutes were no longer able to treat patients in established practices. Cooperation with "Aryan" doctors (practice stand-ins, referrals, etc.) was also forbidden. By the summer of 1933 other part time Jewish university staff, including scientific researchers and chief consultants based at other hospitals were also dismissed. The annulment of medical licences followed. Soon after this, physical persecution began and late attempts at emigration were often unsuccessful. Those who did not wish to emigrate or who were not in a position to leave Germany were deported and in many cases these persons were murdered in death camps. The list of excluded and evicted Charité colleagues depicted on these columns is based on information pertaining to university lecturers (>160) and a small number of assistants and other employees (<30). These persons were either members of the university medical faculty or Charité associates who were persecuted for racial or political reasons. The list is based on current knowledge from available sources. Information pertaining to assistants and other Charité employees and the large number of ex-matriculated students is still missing. The Charité must strive to investigate the fates of these persons in the near future. The limited number of women whose names are listed on these columns reflects the restricted career opportunities that were available to women at the time. In addition there are large gaps in the available information concerning the fates of listed professors, in many cases not even the date of death is known. Stahnisch (Guest Editor)1 Abstract: The processes of long-term migration of physicians and scholars affect both the academic migrants and their receiving environments in often dramatic ways. On the one side, their encounter confronts two different knowledge traditions and personal values. On the other side, migrating scientists and academics are also confronted with foreign institutional, political, economic, and cultural frameworks when trying to establish their own ways of professional knowledge and cultural adjustments. The twentieth century has been called the century of war and forced migration: it witnessed two devastating World Wars, which led to an exodus of physicians, scientists, and academics. Nazism and Fascism in the 1930s and 1940s, forced thousands of scientists and physicians away from their home institutions based in Central and Eastern Europe.

  • 'Chronophilia': Entries of Erotic Age Preference Into Descriptive
Med. Hist. (2015), vol. 59(4), pp. 575–598. c The Author 2015. Published by Cambridge University Press 2015 doi:10.1017/mdh.2015.47 ‘Chronophilia’: Entries of Erotic Age Preference into Descriptive Psychopathology DIEDERIK F. JANSSEN* Independent researcher, Nijmegen, The Netherlands Abstract: A scientific nomenclature of erotic age preferences informed the mid- through late nineteenth century joint appearance of homosexuality and sexual abuse of minors on the medico-legal scene. Yet, even in the twenty-first century, legal, psychiatric and culture-critical dimensions of related terms are rarely cleanly distinguished. Review of primary sources shows the ongoing Western suspension of notions of ‘sick desire’, alongside and beyond the medicalisation of homosexuality, between metaphor, legal interdiction and postulated psychopathology. Virtually all early attention to erotic age preference occurred in the context of emergent attention to erotic gender preference. Age of attraction and age difference centrally animate modern homosexuality’s pre-modern past; its earliest psychiatric nomenclature and typologies (1844–69); its early aetiologies stipulating degrees of sexual differentiation (1890s); its concomitant sub-classification (1896–1914); its earliest psychophysiological tests (1950s); and, finally, its post-psychiatric, social scientific typologies (1980s). Several identifications of ‘paedophilia’ were seen throughout the 1890s but as a trope it gained cultural momentum only during, and as a seemingly intriguing corollary of, the progressive

  • Educational Material Secondary School Levels I & II
Educational material Secondary school levels I & II IN THE BERNISCHES HISTORISCHES MUSEUM www.einsteinmuseum.ch Introduction Dear Colleagues, Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was living in Bern when – exactly 110 years ago – he turned our perceptions of space and time upside down with his theory of relativity. This world-renowned genius spent 18 years of his life in Switzerland. Of Jewish or- igin with Swabian roots, Einstein possessed a German, a Swiss and an Austrian passport. Later, he acquired American citizenship as well. However, he did not iden- tify with his various nationalities but saw himself rather as a citizen of the world. He was also an ardent pacifist. As part of the Bernisches Historisches Museum, the approximately 1000 m² of ex- hibition space in the Einstein Museum offer an account of the life of the physicist, interwoven with great historical events and the political and social trends of the 20th century. Some 550 original objects and replicas, 70 films and numerous ani- mations outline the biography of the genius and his ground-breaking discoveries and, at the same, time illustrate the history of his time. For school teachers, we offer various sources of information. As usual, you can ar- range for your class to be guided through the exhibition by one of our experienced museum staff. An audio guide in nine languages is also available. This educational material contains suggestions to help you organise your visit to the museum as well as providing information for preparatory or follow-up lessons in the classroom. The exercises for students follow the layout of the exhibition and – unless explicitly mentioned otherwise in the header – are suitable for both sec- ondary school levels (I and II), whereby the degree of difficulty depends on the knowledge of the individual student.

His ground- breaking theories about dream interpretation and psychological types have often been overshadowed by allegations that he was anti-Semitic and a Nazi sympathizer. Most accounts have unfortunately been marred with factual errors and quotes taken out of context; this has been due to the often partisan sympathies of those who have written about him. Some biographies of Jung have taken a “Stations-of-the-Cross” approach to his life that adds little new information. Richard Noll’s The Jung Cult and The Aryan Christ were more specialized studies but created a sensationalistic portrait of Jung based on highly selective and flawed assessment of the historical record. Though not written in reaction to Noll (the research and writing were begun long before his books appeared), this dissertation is intended to offer a comprehensive account of the controversial aspects of Jung’s life and work.

  • Homosexual Desire in Revolutionary Russia: the Regulation of Sexual
5 Perversion or Perversity? MEDICINE, POLITICS, AND THE REGULATION OF SEX AND GENDER DISSENT AFTER SODOMY DECRIMINALIZATION ow would Soviet power understand and regulate same-sex H love? One ambitious junior psychiatrist in 1922 had no doubt that the latest scientific knowledge dictated a medical view of the issue: Doctors look upon homosexuals as unfortunate stepchildren of fate. They are like cripples, similar to the blind, deaf-mutes, et cetera, who owe their defect only to a physiological deformation; but they can in no way be considered ill-intentioned, debauched people offending public morality and therefore, the term perversion [izvrashchenie] (inversio), and not perversity [izrashchennost’] or even less so, debauchery [razvrash- chennost’], is used to designate this pathological condition.1 V. P. Protopopov of Petrograd argued for a potentially progressive ap- proach. By banishing the old regime’s religious, moralistic understand- ing in favor of a view already widely supported in Western medical circles, Soviet jurisprudence and medicine would rationalize the treat- ment of this sexual anomaly. As “homosexuals” were thought to be victims of a biological deformity and not responsible for their sexual drives, a modern society relieved of bourgeois philistinism would no longer condemn them to prison but invite them instead into the clinic. Writing as Russia’s new criminal code was still under discussion in the People’s Commissariat of Justice, Protopopov expressed what some held to be the rationale for the eventual decriminalization of sodomy. The Communist Party’s preoccupation with the fundamental ques- tions of rule dominated its politics in the 1920s. A succession struggle followed Lenin’s incapacitating strokes beginning in 1922 and his death in January 1924; the associated debate over industrialization between 126 PERVERSION OR PERVERSITY? 127 Stalin and his opponents occupied the first peacetime years of Soviet rule.
