SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of microfilm purchased from the National Archives. The collection documents early military history of , as a territory and a state. For the most part, the records cover Indians from 1871-1896, and volunteer service in the Civil War. The records on microfilm are a part of RG94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office, housed in the National Archives.

The collection is divided into five series: 1) Letters Received by the Adjutant General's Office, 1871-1880; 2) Special Reports and Miscellaneous, 1805-1896; and 3) Returns Received from Regular Army Cavalry Units, 1868-1916; 4) Returns Received from Regular Army Infantry Units, 1876-1894; and 5) Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers;.

Series One contains correspondence and reports received by the Adjutant General's office that are a part of M666 of the National Archives collections.

Series Two contains special reports of expeditions and investigations by the Adjutant General's office, 1805-1896, including such subjects as the Zebulon Pike expedition, the civil war, the , and the Powder River Expedition.

Series Three, purchased in 1993, contains returns of the 3rd through the 12th cavalry units while they served in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa, and particularly Fort Robinson and vicinity. The records on microfilm are a part of RG94, Adjutant General, at the National Archives and microcopy M744. This microfilm was purchased for the use of and can be found at our Fort Robinson facility only. Series Four, purchased in 1997, contains returns of 4th, 8th and 9th Infantry Regiments. The records on microfilm are from microfilm publication M665 of the National Archives. Fort Robinson has all four rolls plus the returns from the 4th Infantry, 1886-1895.

Series Five, purchased in 1995, contains service records of volunteer Union soldiers who served in organizations from the territory of Nebraska. Members of the Civil War Conservation Corps prepared the records for filming. Donations from Cliff and Mary Hillegass and Cliffs Notes, Inc. of Lincoln provided the funding needed to microfilm the records. The units represented in this microfilm include the First and Second Nebraska Cavalrys, and the First Battalion of the Nebraska Cavalry.

Series Six contains the records of service and enlistments for Indian Scouts, including the Omaha & Pawnee indians.

Document File 4163 (Sioux War), 1876 Correspondence, telegrams, reports, relating to Sioux uprisings, battles, and surrender of indians, 1876-1877. Included is information on the Sioux Expedition, the Power River Expedition, defeat and surrender of Crazy Horse; a speech made by “Spotted Tail”, Sioux chief in Dec. 1876; and reference to the Battle of Little Big Horn. Important correspondents include, Lt. Gen. Phil Sheridan; Wm. Tecumseh Sherman, and Gen. George Crook. Correspondence ranges from March 1876 to October 1877.
