Velema, Department of History, University of Amsterdam Paper prepared for the conference ‘The Republican Tradition: From the Hanseatic League to the Era of the Enlightenment’, European University at St. Petersburg, December 7-9, 2012 Not to be quoted or cited without permission from the author It is more than half a century ago that R.R. Palmer, who was soon to become famous with his magisterial work The Age of the Democratic Revolution, introduced an international scholarly audience to the Dutch revolution of 1795, also known as the Batavian revolution. In his pioneering article ‘Much in Little: the Dutch Revolution of 1795’, he pointed out that the fall of the Dutch ancien régime and the revolutionary transformation of the Netherlands that followed this downfall could best be understood as part of an international and interlinked series of revolutionary events.1 On a small scale, the Batavian revolution therefore could serve to ‘illuminate the whole complex of war and revolution which then gripped the Western world’.2 As he made abundantly clear in the title of his later magnum opus, Palmer had a relatively simple and straightforward view of the struggles that tore the Western world of the late eighteenth century apart. Just as democracy had been at issue in the Dutch revolution of 1795, the whole European and American world of the final decades of the century of Enlightenment saw the rise of a new and historically unprecedented democratic opposition against all sorts of aristocratic ‘constituted bodies’. -
Mistranslations of the Prophets' Names in the Holy Quran: a Critical Evaluation of Two Translations

I. Issa Dept. of English & Translation, Jadara University, PO box 733, Irbid, Jordan Abstract This study is devoted to discuss the renditions of the prophets' names in the Holy Quran due to the authority of the religious text where they reappear, the significance of the figures who carry them, the fact that they exist in many languages, and the fact that the Holy Quran addresses all mankind. The data are drawn from two translations of the Holy Quran by Ali (1964), and Al-Hilali and Khan (1993). It examines the renditions of the twenty five prophets' names with reference to translation strategies in this respect, showing that Ali confused the conveyance of six names whereas Al-Hilali and Khan confused the conveyance of four names. Discussion has been raised thereupon to present the correct rendition according to English dictionaries and encyclopedias in addition to versions of the Bible which add a historical perspective to the study. Introduction In Prophets’ names comprise a significant part of people's names which in turn constitutes a main subdivision of proper nouns which include in addition to people's names the names of countries, places, months, days, holidays etc. In terms of translation, many translators opt for transliterating proper names thinking that transliteration is a straightforward process depending on an idea deeply rooted in many people's minds that proper nouns are never translated or that the translation of proper names is as Vermes (2003:17) states "a simple automatic process of transference from one language to another." The American Revolution Institute Plan of Instruction on the American Revolution In order to ensure proper understanding and appreciation of the American Revolution and its legacy, the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati has developed this plan of instruction on the American Revolution for students in grades nine through twelve. The plan is designed to be followed during that part of a secondary school course on U.S. history that covers the period between 1754 and 1791, beginning with the French and Indian War and ending with the ratification of the U.S. Bill of Rights. The American Revolution Institute recommends that each state, or as local circumstances may dictate, each school district, adopt a version of this plan. The plan is based on the interpretive framework developed by the American Revolution Institute to organize and synthesize the enduring achievements of the American Revolution and presents them in a way that makes sense of an extremely complex series of social, economic, political, intellectual, legal, and constitutional developments spanning nearly forty years. That interpretive framework rests on the best advanced scholarship on the Revolution published over the last seventy years, an extraordinary body of creative work that places the American Revolution at the center of American history. Students taught according to this plan of instruction should learn that the American Revolution: • secured the independence of the United States from British rule; • established republics in each of the independent states as well as a federal government based on republican principles; • created American national identity; and • committed the new nation to ideals of liberty, equality, natural and civil rights, and responsible citizenship that have shaped American history for nearly 250 years. -
The Figure of Joseph the Patriarch in the New Testament and the Early Church
ABSTRACT “Much More Ours Than Yours”: The Figure of Joseph the Patriarch in the New Testament and the Early Church by John Lee Fortner This paper investigates the figure of Joseph the patriarch in early Christian interpretation, demonstrating the importance of such figures in articulating a Christian reading of the history of Israel, and the importance of this reading in the identity formation of early Christianity. The paper also illumines the debt of this Christian reading of Israel’s history to the work of Hellenistic Judaism. The figure of Joseph the patriarch is traced through early Christian interpretation, primarily from the Eastern Church tradition up to the 4th century C.E. EVOLVING OUR HEROES: AN ANALYSIS OF FOUNDERS AND "FOUNDING FATHERS" IN AMERICAN HISTORY DISSERTATIONS John M. Stawicki A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2019 Committee: Andrew Schocket, Advisor Ruth Herndon Scott Martin © 2019 John Stawicki All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This thesis studies scholarly memory of the American founders and “Founding Fathers” via inclusion in American dissertations. Using eighty-one semi-randomly and diversely selected founders as case subjects to examine and trace how individual, group, and collective founder interest evolved over time, this thesis uniquely analyzes 20th and 21st Century Revolutionary American scholarship on the founders by dividing it five distinct periods, with the most recent period coinciding with “founders chic.” Using data analysis and topic modeling, this thesis engages three primary historiographic questions: What founders are most prevalent in Revolutionary scholarship? Are social, cultural, and “from below” histories increasing? And if said histories are increasing, are the “New Founders,” individuals only recently considered vital to the era, posited by these histories outnumbering the Top Seven Founders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine) in founder scholarship? The thesis concludes that the Top Seven Founders have always dominated founder dissertation scholarship, that social, cultural, and “from below” histories are increasing, and that social categorical and “New Founder” histories are steadily increasing as Top Seven Founder studies are slowly decreasing, trends that may shift the Revolutionary America field away from the Top Seven Founders in future years, but is not yet significantly doing so. -

This consensus, however, collapsed as a result of the partisan strife of the 1790s. The Federalist Party embraced the strategic rationale laid out by naval boosters in the previous decade, namely that only a powerful, seagoing battle fleet offered a viable means of defending the nation's vulnerable ports and harbors. Federalists also believed a navy was necessary to protect America's burgeoning trade with overseas markets. Republicans did not dispute the desirability of the Federalist goals, but they disagreed sharply with their political opponents about the wisdom of depending on a navy to achieve these ends. In place of a navy, the Republicans with Jefferson and Madison at the lead championed an altogether different prescription for national security and commercial growth: economic coercion. The Federalists won most of the legislative confrontations of the 1790s. But their very success contributed to the party's decisive defeat in the election of 1800 and the abandonment of their plans to create a strong blue water navy. -

It’s an odd question, mostly because Jews are the only ethnic group who would actually have the audacity to ask it about themselves. It is diffi cult to imagine Swedes, Bosnians, or Italians sitting around and pondering that question. Jews have never been able to aff ord the luxury of that lack of introspection. The German liberal rabbi and theologian Leo Baeck put it this way: “The Jews have always been a minority. But a minor- ity is compelled to think, and that is the blessing of being a minor- ity.” So, why does there need to be a Jewish people? It’s quite sim- ple: the Jews were God’s last resort. The Book of God’s Disappointments For a supposedly “Jewish” book, the TANAKH (the Hebrew Bible) certainly takes its time in getting to the Jews. The fi rst eleven chap- ters of the Bible have nothing to do with Jews or Judaism.
