IOSR Journal of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 26, Issue 2, Series 8 (February. 2021) 26-33 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Genesis of Nationalism and Nationalist Movement in a Bengal District Maldah, 1905-1916 Akhil Ray ABSTRACT: The paper is dealt with the genesis of the regional form of national Consciousness that has been emerged during the year from 1905 to 1916 in one of the regions of Bengal namely Maldah. This period has also witnessed the emergence of a new class of English educated intelligentsia, which had been the chief vehicle for spreading nationalist consciousness in this district. Maldah, as one of the regions of colonial Bengal, proved to be significant in many respect in these years of nationalist struggles and paved the future discourse of this movement. The distinct entity of intelligentsia has been developed in the first two decades of the twentieth century in Maldah and it has spread across the region to influence the minds of the people of whom educated played a crucial role. This paper also analyses the diverse role of the intelligentsia and students in two important movements, one was the anti-partition of Bengal (Swadeshi) in 1905 and the other was the revolutionary terrorism. This has also given birth to a new hope and aspirations for participating in these struggles and proved crucial in the ongoing national movements. KEYWORDS: Maldah, Nationalism, Anti-partion, Terrorism, Swadeshi, Intelligentsia. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date of Submission: 13-02-2021 Date of Acceptance: 27-02-2021 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The emergence and growth of national consciousness and subsequently nationalist movement in Maldah from1905 to 1916 is the main thrust of this paper. -

The Department of School Education has undertaken the task of Universalisation of Elementary Education and is getting ready to reach out to Universalisation of Secondary Education. We are happy to reduce the out of school children in Upper Primary level. We have been successful in bringing almost all children to Primary School through effective mobilisation by the Village/Ward Education Committee and participation of mothers in particular. Besides reduction in the number of Out of School Childern and Drop Out rates at the Primary level, increase in the capacities including improved access to Elementary Education could be seen around the State. Steps have also been initiated for a significant expansion at the Secondary and Higher Secondary level. About 3800 new set up Upper Primary Schools are coming up to cater to the needs of these huge number of students. Both Pre-service & In-service Training of Inspecting Officers/Teachers at different level were scaled up for qualitative improvement at every level of School Education. -

MALDA DISTRICT Sri Rajarshri Mitra, District Magistrate & Collector I.A.S
DISASTER MANAGEMENT PLAN 2020-2021 MALDA DISTRICT Sri Rajarshri Mitra, District Magistrate & Collector I.A.S. Malda (W.B) Telephone : Office : 03512-252381 Resi : 03512-252415 Fax : 03512-253092 Email : [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________________ FOREWORD The area enclosed by the district of Malda has historically been affected by the changing course of the rivers, even as its rise was due to being a major reverine port in the first place. Disturbances in the course of Ganga resulted in shifting of capital of the entire Bengal from Gaur (Lakhnauti) to Pandua in 1342 and again from there in mid-15th century when river Mahananda started to veer away from this site. The rivers have given this land fertility and also cursed it by frequent flood and erosion. The unique geological features of this district make it particularly vulnerable. Major part of the district except the eastern blocks covers an adjacent tract of flat lowland between 27 m and 21 m contours sloping gradually from north to south, and is classified into two additional physiographic regions viz the Tal and the Diara. Topographic gradients along the Tal region, consisting of the area defined by Chanchal Sub-Division, are barely existent, at an average of a mere 0.05 degree. Therefore, Ganga is the only fast moving river in this region, with a average gradient of 1:14500. The other minor regional rivers of the Tal barely manage to crawl across the tract at extremely low gradients ranging between 1:21000 and 1:25000 for Mahananda, Tangan and Punarbhava and even lower at 1:31200 for Kalindri. -
Disguises of Shiva Nationalism and Folk Culture in the Bengal
Disguises of Shiva Nationalism and Folk Culture in the Bengal Borderland since 1905 By Aniket De Department of History Tufts University An Honors Thesis submitted to the Department of History Of Tufts University in partial fulfilment of the requirements For the degree of Bachelor of Arts Examined by Ayesha Jalal, Mary Richardson Professor of History, Chair Kris K. Manjapra, Associate Professor of History Sarah Pinto, Associate Professor of Anthropology Defended on April 26, 2016 2 Abstract This thesis studies the history of a folk theatre form called Gambhira, performed in what is today the northern part of the Indo-Bangladesh border, principally in the districts of Malda and Chapai Nawabganj. On the Indian side, it is performed around the figure of the Hindu god Shiva; people address their complaints and grievances by ridiculing and grumbling to the god. Across the border in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Shiva has been replaced by a Muslim farmer, the genre of grumbling remaining the same. Lying at the interface of cultural and intellectual history and ethnography and drawing on archival and ethnographic work conducted in India, Bangladesh and England, this thesis traces how various changes in this local, small-scale performance form have occurred in dialogue with broader, structural events of modern South Asian history since 1905, like anti-colonial nationalism, the Partition of India, and the making of postcolonial nation-states. The history of Gambhira acts as a lens to reveal how the idea and practice of the “folk” has remained, throughout the twentieth century, a site of mediation between metropolitan political ideologies and local cultural worlds.
