FANZINE INDEX Whole Number One ________________a - Conto__________________ December 1952 This is the first of an anticipated series of issues of this index, which is intended to present data on fanzines of all times for any purpose the fanzine-inclined fan may find useful0 As information currently exists, this is not a complete indexo (A glance at page 2 will show that even such an important fanzine as ”Ah! Sweet Idiocy’” has been omittedo) Any fan with a general collection of three or more feet of fanzines could probably supply some information that is lacking hereo The more fans that do supply this information, the more complete subsequent swings around the alphabet will be0 Regardless of the gaps, however, this is by far the most complete index of fanzines ever pub­ lished, and we only hope that it will be of some interest and possibly even of benefit to the fan editor, collector, or historiano The basic information for this indez comes from Ro Do Swisher, who, between approximately 193$ and 19^6, did the terrific task of compiling information on fanzines from the beginnings to mid-19^6o Information subsequent to this has been added by Bill Evans and Bob Pavlat, with invaluable assistance from various fans far top numerous to mention,, However, Bob Silverberg did provide assistance above and beyond the call of duty, wading thru this fanzine collection at our request for information; and Walter Ao Coslet’s index of fanzines distributed thru the aegis of the Spectator Amateur Press Society has also been of great assistance0 In years past the work of Bob Tucker, Julius Unger,, and ^sj Ackerman seem to have been particularly helpfulo Many other fans have helped, currently, and in the past, help without which this index would be even more incomplete than it is nowl A few words about the symbols and organization of material used in this index seems to be required., Generally speaking, the informa­ tion is arranged as follows: lo Fanzine title, and, if appropriate, author0 2o Editor(s)0 Jo Volume and issue number, and whole numbero h-o Date0 5o Page size, considering an x 11 page as unityo 6o Number of pages in the issueo 7o Reproduction method usedo The above information varies, depending upon the method that ° seemed best at the time of typing, but the presentation is, we believe, clean enough if the reader exerts himself just a trifleo The fanzine title used is that which seems most likely to be looked under foi’ in­ formation, with frequent use of cross-indexing when it appeared that a fanzine might be looked for under two or more titles□ Speaking broadly, the author is listed when the creative work in the publication is the work of one man, the editorial and publishing work that of another., Usually, the numbering system of the editor is used, regardless of the sense that it may or may not make., Wien an obvious error is made by the editor, the correct number is shwon with a footnote to show in­ formation that actually appeared on the magazine□ The same has been done with regard to dating systerns□ In the case where no number and/or date appeared on the magazine, an estimated date or number has been shown in .parentheseso (The use of parentheses may also Indicate that the information shown came from sources other than the fanzine itself\ such as a:fanzine review column.) (Tod und Teufel) ...... 305 INTRODUCTION Frank Wedekind’s name is widely, if vaguely, known by now, outside of Germany, and at least five of his plays have been available in English form for qui^e some years, yet a resume of biographical facts and critical opinions seems necessary as introduction to this—I will not say authoritative, but more care- ful—book. The task is genial, since Wedekind was my special study at Munich in 1913, and I translated his two Lulu tragedies the year after. The timidity or disapprobation betrayed in this respect by our professional critics of foreign drama makes my duty the more imperative. James Huneker merely called him “a naughty boy !” Percival Pollard tiptoed around him, pointing out a trait here and a trait there, like a menagerie-keeper with a prize tiger.

    Early Modern Catholicism : an Anthology of Primary Sources

    Early Modern Catholicism makes available in modern spelling and punctuation substantial Catholic contributions to literature, history, political thought, devotion, and theology in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Rather than perpetuate the usual stereotypes and misinformation, it provides a fresh look at Catholic writing long suppressed, marginalized, and ignored. The anthology gives back voices to those silenced by prejudice, exile, persecution, or martyrdom while attention to actual texts challenges conventional beliefs about the period. The anthology is divided into eight sections entitled controversies, lives and deaths, poetry, instructions and devotions, drama, histories, fic- tion, and documents, and includes seventeen black and white illustrations from a variety of Early Modern sources. Amongst the selections are texts which illuminate the role of women in recusant community and in the Church; the rich traditions of prayer and mysticism; the theology and politics of martyrdom; the emergence of the Catholic Baroque in literature and art; and the polemical battles fought within the Church and against its enemies. Early Modern Catholicism also provides a context that redefines the established canons of Early Modern England, including such figures as Edmund Spenser, John Donne, John Milton, William Shakespeare, and Ben Jonson. 1. Durante Alberti, ‘The Martyrs Picture’, 1583. The Blessed Trinity is depicted with two martyrs, St Thomas of Canterbury (1118–70) on the left and St Edmund of East Anglia (849–69) on the right. Christ’s blood falls on the British Isles and erupts in flame. The text is the College motto, Ignem veni mittere in terram (I have come to bring fire to the earth) (Luke 12:49).

The Author Janina Falkowska is a retired professor from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario (Canada) and Professor at the University of Economics and Humanities (WSEH) in Bielsko-Biala (Poland). She specializes in East-Central European and Western European cinemas and has published extensively on Polish and East-Central European cinemas in journals and books related to Eastern and Central Europe. She has initiated a series of conferences about small cinemas in Europe and organized workshops and conferences on European cinemas in Canada.

So during the rest of the day for which they were paying me money, the guys in production would give me sheets of paper with pictures printed on them, I would cut out the pictures and uhen they would give me crayons and let me color them in.     1954 Retro Hugo Nominating and Voting Statistics Noreascon Four – The 62nd Worldcon Boston, Massachusetts USA The nominees that follow were chosen by popular vote by 131 members of Noreascon 4 and Torcon 3 who submitted valid nomination forms for work done in 1953. A total of 131 nomination forms (35 paper and 96 on-line forms) were received. As required by the WSFS Constitution, we report the top 15 vote-getters in each category. (In no category did anyone else get as many as 5% of the nominations cast in that category.) Except for a few items which are marked as ineligible, no attempt was made to validate the name title or eligibility of any item which would not affect the final nomination listing. When a nominee received nominations in more than one category, we combined nominations to the correct category where appropriate. To determine the viability of categories, potential nominees with four or fewer nominations were dropped from consideration; where this dropped a given category below three nominees, the category was dropped as non-viable.
