(Tod und Teufel) ...... 305 INTRODUCTION Frank Wedekind’s name is widely, if vaguely, known by now, outside of Germany, and at least five of his plays have been available in English form for qui^e some years, yet a resume of biographical facts and critical opinions seems necessary as introduction to this—I will not say authoritative, but more care- ful—book. The task is genial, since Wedekind was my special study at Munich in 1913, and I translated his two Lulu tragedies the year after. The timidity or disapprobation betrayed in this respect by our professional critics of foreign drama makes my duty the more imperative. James Huneker merely called him “a naughty boy !” Percival Pollard tiptoed around him, pointing out a trait here and a trait there, like a menagerie-keeper with a prize tiger. -
Early Modern Catholicism : an Anthology of Primary Sources
Early Modern Catholicism makes available in modern spelling and punctuation substantial Catholic contributions to literature, history, political thought, devotion, and theology in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Rather than perpetuate the usual stereotypes and misinformation, it provides a fresh look at Catholic writing long suppressed, marginalized, and ignored. The anthology gives back voices to those silenced by prejudice, exile, persecution, or martyrdom while attention to actual texts challenges conventional beliefs about the period. The anthology is divided into eight sections entitled controversies, lives and deaths, poetry, instructions and devotions, drama, histories, fic- tion, and documents, and includes seventeen black and white illustrations from a variety of Early Modern sources. Amongst the selections are texts which illuminate the role of women in recusant community and in the Church; the rich traditions of prayer and mysticism; the theology and politics of martyrdom; the emergence of the Catholic Baroque in literature and art; and the polemical battles fought within the Church and against its enemies. Early Modern Catholicism also provides a context that redefines the established canons of Early Modern England, including such figures as Edmund Spenser, John Donne, John Milton, William Shakespeare, and Ben Jonson. 1. Durante Alberti, ‘The Martyrs Picture’, 1583. The Blessed Trinity is depicted with two martyrs, St Thomas of Canterbury (1118–70) on the left and St Edmund of East Anglia (849–69) on the right. Christ’s blood falls on the British Isles and erupts in flame. The text is the College motto, Ignem veni mittere in terram (I have come to bring fire to the earth) (Luke 12:49). -

The films discussed provide an excellent platform for enhancing debates on politics, gender, migration and new aesthetics in cinema at departments of history, sociology, literature and film. The Author Janina Falkowska is a retired professor from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario (Canada) and Professor at the University of Economics and Humanities (WSEH) in Bielsko-Biala (Poland). She specializes in East-Central European and Western European cinemas and has published extensively on Polish and East-Central European cinemas in journals and books related to Eastern and Central Europe. She has initiated a series of conferences about small cinemas in Europe and organized workshops and conferences on European cinemas in Canada. -

Tragedies inspired by his death began to surface due to the efforts of the Society of Jesus, the religious order that used him to embody its theological and rhetorical agendas. This dissertation investigates the figure of San Hermenegildo as a stage character in the period comprised between 1590 and 1690. Specifically, it looks at five tragedies, two Spanish, two Italian, and one Mexican, to demonstrate how the treatment of the martyr varied widely according to geo- political and rhetorical necessities. The subtle balance between the evident consistency of the Hermenegildo theatrical trope and the many differences traceable in the individual plays illuminates the powerful ideologies and the propagandistic objectives that Jesuit theatre came to embody during the Baroque era, as well as the struggle for power happening within and without the Society of Jesus. -
