The Hugo ceremony was co-hosted by George Takei (aka Sulu, from ), who was very entertaining. We attended the pre-Hugo reception Ñ I was invited because Naomi was serving as the designated Acceptor for Guy Lillian (Southern fan, former Con Stellation Guest, and many-time-Hugo Nominee). There was a huge spread of food, but we were still too full to enjoy much of it. The design of the Hugo, revealed at the reception, was quite different than most. Standing next to the Hugo rocket, and almost as tall, was a statue of , a character in a popular Japanese TV series. It will certainly go down as one of the more unique Hugo designs. As for the ceremony itself, there were a surprising number of technical problems with microphones, slide synchroniza- tion, etc., but they got the kinks worked out after awhile. Everything was translated to/from Japanese, which often meant two rounds of applause, so it seemed to take considerably longer than usual. But in all it lasted about two and a quarter hours, which isnÕt hugely more than the average Hugo cere- mony.
