What is the scope of the project? This is a new nine-acre commons complex including five residence halls, a dining commons, and an 800 space parking garage. The complex provides campus housing for 1,250 students. The project cost $146 million. Cast Stone is an important architectural feature throughout the SMU campus.

2015 Excellence Award Winners SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence

What special molding or casting techniques were necessary to illustrate the Architect’s concept on the project? There were many extremely large pieces of Cast Stone on the project. The pieces at the rotunda and entry averaged over 4 cubes per piece. The casting of such large pieces presented special planning - proper and timely tamping and turning of the pieces. The rotunda design of the dining area with its 30,000 sq. ft. area, created the most planning from a manufacturing perspective. The Cast Stone pieces at the roof cornice had a 35 degree radius. The Cast Stone sign, spanning over 100 ft., for the dining commons consisted of a radius design supported by Cast Stone columns. 2015 Excellence Award Winners SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence

Degree of Difficulty This project consisted of over 23,000 pieces of Cast Stone. The size and critical timing of this project made this project difficult. There was a small amount of space for storage of the Cast Stone at the job site, therefore scheduling, shipping accuracy and coordination were critical. 2015 Excellence Award Winners SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence

Were there unique project requirements that presented particular challenges and how were they met? The completion of the project coinciding with the opening of the residence halls for the fall semester was a project requirement.
