The overall 7.78% prevalence of bovine trypanosomosis was recorded from 836 blood sample collected from selected animals using Buffy coat method. Trypanosoma congolense was the dominant species 36 (55.38%), while the low infection was mixed infection of Trypanosoma Congolense and trypanosome vivax 2 (3.07%). The highest prevalence 36(17.64%) of the disease was recorded in Merfo peasant association while the lowset 1(0.7%) was recorded in Kutala-Lube association. The mean packed cell volume (PCV) was 21.95% and 24.47% in parasitamic and aparasitemic animals, respectively. There were statistically significant difference (P<0.05) in prevalence of the disease between sexes and higher prevalence rate 26(9.42%) and 48(8.75%) in poor body condition scores and with > 3 years ages, respectively. -

Background: The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (GOE) is currently implementing its second Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP), “the Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to End Poverty” (PASDEP - 2005/06 - 2009110 dated September 2006). One of the eight pillars highlighted in PASDEP is to strengthen the infrastructure backbone of the country, aiming at major expansion of the road network. This is intended to facilitate growth, in both the agriculture and industrial sectors, by opening up corridors, port linkages, tourism areas, as well as linking emerging regions better to the rest ofthe country. The Road Sector Development Program (RSDP: 1997-2010) which was initially launched in 1997, identified a number ofkey aspects that are addressed under PASDEP - e.g. developing roads connecting areas of great potential to alleviate poverty; missing road links important to the national economy and regional equity; etc. 2. Proposed roads: The following three federal link road sections - which are the subject of the Environmental Impacts Assessment (EIA) reports summarized in this document - are selected to be financed by the World Bank under the proposed Ethiopia Road Sector Development Stage IV Project (APL4) in Support of Govt’s RSDP from the above- mentioned aspects to enhance rural development through linking rural areadweredas to truck road network, enabling the rural population benefit from rapidly restoring road network. -

No. 17 October-December 2015 Quarterly Early Warning Bulletin for Food and Agriculture El Niño and Rainfall Source: International Research Institute for Climate and Society Alerts on threats to the food chain and food security in countries and regions FAO Quarterly Early Warning Bulletin for Food and Agriculture No. 17 October-December 2015 The Quarterly Early Warning Bulletin for Food and Agriculture integrates information on food security and threats to the food chain for the three months ahead. It is a product of collaboration between the Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES) for transboundary animal and plant pests and diseases and food safety threats, the Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS), and the Intelligence and Coordination Unit of the Food Chain Crisis Management Framework (FCC). Data is provided by GIEWS and EMPRES. Highlights Threats to the food chain1 and food security: Animal and aquatic diseases: o With the upcoming winter, the forecast for Avian Influenza is as follows: − In West Africa, the risk of further spread of Avian Influenza (H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) to Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger and Nigeria in poultry is persisting. To date no reported cases of human samples tested. − In Southeast Asia and China, a high risk of occurrence of Avian Influenza (H5N1, H7N9, H5N2, H5N3, H5N6, and H5N8) outbreaks is expected with potential spread within endemic countries and to free areas. o The risk of re-occurrence and spread of a vector borne disease - Rift Valley fever (RVF) - is amplified in Eastern Africa with El Niño conditions. Strong persistent El Niño conditions are associated with periods of widespread and prolonged heavy rainfall creating ideal environmental and ecological conditions for the emergence of RVF vectors. -

In many production areas of Ethiopia up to 85% of the farmers and 35% of the total arable land were allotted for ginger production. However, this potential spices crop wiped out by a sudden outbreak of bacterial wilt epidemics in 2011 and 2012. A survey was conducted on the status of ginger bacterial wilt incidence in major growing areas of Ethiopia and laboratory work was done to identify the causal agent of ginger wilt. The diseases were found distributed in all ginger growing areas and the loss were estimated up to 100%. During 2012 survey season the wilt incidence percentage was recorded maximum (93.5) in Sheka zone followed by Benchmaji zone (91.6) and Majang zone (65.7) while the lowest wilt incidence was recorded in gamogofa zone (10.7). During 2014 survey season wilt incidence percentage was recorded maximum (98.9) in Benchmaji zone followed by Majang zone (98.8) and Sheka zone (97.4) while the lowest wilt incidence was recorded in Keffa zone (78.4).
