YOUTH MINISTRY

"Lord, you are my ; I will exalt you and praise your name for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago." - 25:1 Thank you to everyone who came to our Cookies With Olaf Valentine’s Day Party! We raised $175 for the Blessing House! This week we will focus on the true meaning of love. As John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life”. We will focus on what this means! Those in grades 6th-8th will meet at 5:30 p.m., we will all attend the Teen Mass at 7:00 p.m., and high school students will meet from 8:00-9:30 p.m. in the Youth Group Room! Mother/Son Game Night: On Saturday, February 25th, we will have our first annual Mother/Son Game Night. Moms and sons of all ages are invited to join us in O’Brien Hall for board games, super-sized games, contests, prizes, dinner, and more. All proceeds will go towards our Life in the Mission Trip to Arizona! Please see the attached flyer for more information! Help Support our Youth Group’s Mission Trip: April 18-23rd, our Life in the Eucharist Retreat for Teens Team will be heading to Saint Michaels, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. This is the largest Navajo Reservation in the US. We will be leading the students who attend Saint Indian School in the Life in the Eucharist Retreat over the course of two days. One day we will serve the students in grades 6-8th, and the following day will serve 9-12th grade. To learn more about the school we are serving, please check out their website: www.stmichaelindianschool.org Part of our Mission trip is to provide resources for their school’s chapel. We want to leave our friends at this school with an everlasting gift to enhance their worship and prayer life. For this, our teens came up with a memorial of sharing music resources to celebrate the Eucharistic with a regular worship resource. They are in desperate need of hymnals and Mass cards to use in their Eucharistic celebration. Our Youth Group’s goal is to purchase 500 Mass cards as well as Spirit and Song Hymnals at $13.00 per book. But we need your help! By purchasing a hymnal for the students at St. Michael Indian School, your family’s name will be placed in each book. Please help us in reaching our goal to provide this much needed resource for the students at St. Michael Indian School! We will also gladly accept any additional monetary donations to help cover the cost of the Mass cards and our Mission trip! We will be taking up a second collection for our trip the weekend of February 18th and 19th. Thank you for your prayers and support!

FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

7th Sunday of Ordinary Time: The Sermon on the Mount continues with Jesus’ first homily about our life as a of God. We are to be perfect as God is perfect. Perhaps understanding a little more clearly: we are to be God in our world. Just as we are blessed, happy or witnessing God when we mourn, seeking the pure of heart, or are being peacemakers – we are perfectly witnessing God to others. May we recognize that we are moving in this direction of truly being God for others and growing in holiness each day of our lives as God’s will is done!

Lots of news this week and things to prepare so let’s get to it! Anthony Ruggerio is no longer on our Pastoral Staff. After Easter we will begin the process again to search for a new pastoral associate for music & liturgy. In the meantime, our great team that filled in last year will continue again: • 4:30 p.m. Saturday – Matt Parrotta & Co. • 8:00 a.m. Sunday – Roberta Modica, The Kramer’s & Co. • 10:00 a.m. Sunday – Michelle Kitko & Adult Choir & Co. • 12 Noon Sunday – Michelle Kitko & Young Adult Choir • 7:00 p.m. Sunday – Julie Parrotta, Teen Choir & me Preparing for LENT: How can we be more “perfect,” or be more like God? That’s why we go on this Lenten Journey each year, to renew our lives and turn our hearts more closely in sync with God’s heart. While Lent is a few weeks away, it’s good to start thinking and preparing for this holy season, changing calendars, organizing our families to think of participating in the following: • ARISE FAITH SHARING GROUP: When we did our Pastoral Plan 3 years ago, members said that they wanted more opportunities to get together to learn about scripture, meet new parishioners and share their faith. Join in a group either here or with our clustermate, Saint Clare for a group that meets in the morning, or afternoon or in the evening at either location. • BIBLE STUDY: Men gather Tuesday’s in the parish office at 7:00 p.m. There is a mixed gender group that meets on Wednesday’s at 7:00 p.m. • WEEKDAY MASSES: Come one day a week to one of our many weekday Masses in the church, the chapel or Saint Ann Shrine at 11:30 a.m. • SUNDAY MASS: Come early to prepare the readings – give yourself more time with getting ready for Mass with your family – and get here in time to hear the great preludes and other musical pieces that our ministry works hard on preparing. Or for those who leave early from Mass – plan on staying for the entire liturgy. • MORNING OR EVENING PRAYER: Join with the Blessed Sacrament Community that leads the prayers of the church, 8:00 a.m. or 4:45 p.m. weekdays. 20 minutes of prayers, intercessions, the recitation of the psalms.

• PRAYER IN THE PRESENCE OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: When driving in the area, make a visit to the chapel to spend more time in prayer, or even better, make an appointment with God by signing up for an hour of praying with the Community at Prayer ministry. • OPERATION RICE BOWL: Make sure to have a rice bowl on your table (they will be in the bulletin next week and around the perimeter of the church) so that you may be in communion with those who need food. Follow the calendar that is provided to grow in our awareness of the needs of our brothers and sisters around the globe. • STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Join in this special devotion either with the entire community, Friday night at 7:00 p.m. or at another time during the week. • PLAN ON ATTENDING THE PARISH MISSION AND BRING OTHERS WITH YOU: March 11 – 14. • SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: We have many opportunities for the sacrament to be celebrated individually or communally: o Students 1 st Penance: Wednesday, February 22, 7:00 p.m. o Saturdays: 3:30 p.m. until the last one is there in line o Monday, March 13, 7:00 p.m. during parish mission o Wednesday, March 15, pick a time between 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. The Diocesan Night of Confession at every church in the diocese that is able o PSR Students: Monday, March 20 o Thursday, April 6: Saint Clare at 7:00 p.m. • TAIZE PRAYER: Monday, March 27, 7:00 p.m. Call a friend; visit the sick; volunteer in a ministry to share, live your discipleship and faith And those Old Palm Branches: It’s our annual custom to burn our old palms branches for the ashes. If you forgot to bring your palm branch back to church, have no fear! You may bring it back at any time. We invite you to bring them to the central Fickel Narthex or at anytime and then we will take care of them for you. It all begins Ash Wednesday: Wednesday, March 1 – so we need to prepare as the calendar flips to another month. See the times elsewhere in the bulletin for the convenient schedule we offer from 6:30 a.m. in the morning to 7:00 p.m. at night. Bringing Back our Social Action Committee: For some years we had a group of men and women who helped us register to vote, remind us of legislative needs and our Christian response to them, as well as help us meet with our legislatures. I have had a few women and men interested in bringing this committee back. With Sr. Kathleen Ryan, SND, the diocesan director, we will have an organizational meeting on Thursday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Billiart Room. Parish Directory: It has been almost 6 years since our last pictorial directory for the parish. It’s time for another one – and during the merry month of May we will invite all parishioners to have their family picture taken. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the project, helping take names, registration and support the process. We will take pictures in the parish offices. Just think! You will have your family Christmas picture ready. Additionally we will have our parish ministries featured. Leaders of organizations and ministries are asked to have a brief statement about the ministry so that we may highlight it and inform others of the great service. Thanks for coming forward to help with this project!

Let us continue to pray for each other and continue our faithful service to one another in the LORD.

In Christ our Eucharist,

Reverend John Thomas J. Lane, SSS, ‘79 Pastor

CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY

Last week I celebrated 39 years as a Deacon and it brought to mind how the good Lord has brought me through these years. God gave me wonderful parents who along with my family inspired me to consider this vocation. I also got support from the religious in my parish. After studying to become a of the Blessed Sacrament I was asked to consider being a permanent deacon for the diocese of New York, and was ordained in St. Patrick Cathedral of New York City. It was a joyous occasion for me, but sad because my family couldn’t attend due to the famous snow storm of 1978. My first assignment was as a chaplain at a hospital during the aids epidemic in which I spent much time counseling the aids patients. Ten years later I went to a parish in Houston, Texas and learned the craft of being a clown from Barnum & Bailey. I used this new skill working as a chaplain and then began a clown ministry. We even had people from Hollywood who were working on the movie "Patch ” come to observe us! Coming to the parish of St. Paschal Baylon has been such a blessing and has given me such spiritual help and support for our ministry. For 39 years God has blessed me with being a part of so many wonderful ministries with such wonderful people and I pray for good health so I can continue to minister to this great parish. Deacon Joe
