Ext 1732 [email protected] We, the people of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Community, believe we are called by God to live our faith and to bring others to Christ by our words and actions. 2 | Welcome to the Catholic Communities of the Ashland Cluster Fr. Jerome’s Message Love and do what you want (Mt 5:17–37) How could Jesus ever annul the law and the prophets? He brings the law to fulfillment by giving us the new law of love. Christianity is not a religion of laws but of love, because love is the supreme law. All the Ten Commandments are summarized in just one: the love of God and the love of neighbor. That is why St. Augustine says: “Love and do what you want!” Jesus came not to abolish the law but to accomplish it; not to cancel the law but to complete it; not to flout the law but to fulfill it. Our virtue must be keener than that of the scribes and the Pharisees if we are to enter the kingdom of God. We need to be reconciled with one another before we attempt to be reconciled with God. Revenge is easy. It makes us clench our fist. Reconciliation is difficult. It makes us to extend our hand in friendship. The measures we take to avoid the occasion of sins must be draconic and drastic. Mere cosmetic changes will not suffice where surgical amputation is necessary. If we play with fire, we are sure to get burned and burn others as well. Thought of the Week: “We must walk united with our differences: there is no other way to become one. This is the way of Jesus.” (Pope Francis) Question of the Week: : What does it mean love of God and love of neighbor for me? Excerpts from “The Sacred that surrounds Us” How everything in a Catholic Church points to Heaven Lectionary The Lectionary is a book used in the Mass that has the first and second readings, Responsorial Psalms, and Gospel readings. “The readings are divided by the day or the theme (baptism, marriage, vocations, etc.) rather than according to the books of the Bible. Introductions and conclusions have been added to each reading”. The Lectionary is read at the ambo in the sanctuary. The chants, readings, and prayers for the Mass were once contained in separate books. One of those books, the Lectionary, in- cluded a list of texts that directed the reader to certain passages in the Bible. When missals were created, the various books merged together under one volume containing these readings for the Mass. In the current Roman Liturgy, the Lectionary is sep- arated out and used in Mass and contains all the Scripture readings for the Mass, including the Gospel reading. Although it has the Gospel readings in it, another book (the Book of the Gospels) is used on Sundays and holy days of obligation. The Lectionary allows us all to hear biblical passages at Mass so that we can fully know, love, and serve God. We hear almost the entire Bible in a three-year cycle at Mass. Oral instruction has been a very important part of the Christian Liturgy since the very beginning. New Christian followers learned their faith by going to Mass. After Jesus ascended into heaven, letters and Gos- pels were written for specific audiences to build up the Christian communities. By the end of the fourth century, there were close to 300 letters and Gospels claiming apostolic authority. After two councils, AD393 Council of Hippo and AD397 Council at Carthage, the Bible canon was decided. Once the Church infallibly set for the whole Christian community the letters and Gospels that should be considered inspired by God, the writings that were read were finally unified. We are truly united in our worship as Catholics even though our community is worldwide. Today, as we sit in Mass, we know that the words we hear, sing and say are divinely inspired and priceless. February 16, 2020 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | 3 Weekly Parish Ministries Update - How we make a difference together from Ric Johnson This week we are grateful for: The “Coffee and Donuts after Mass” organizers: these wonderful volunteer families have made a terrific impact on the community-building and social interactions of our church after the 9:00 am Mass. (There have even been inquiries of wheth- er a similar time can happen after the 6:00 pm Mass.) Thank you SO much for your stewardship of time and talent in making this weekly social time a very family friendly parish tradition. This not only covers all of our buildings (churches, school, rectory, garages, even an outhouse), and our cemeteries, but also liability insurance for all of our staff and properties. Our Insurance carrier covers all of the parishes in the whole Superior Diocese, and thus we receive group rates for our insurances.
