WHAT IS BEREAVEMENT?

Someone you love very dearly has died and the pain, sadness and confusion seem too great for any words to mean anything. Even life itself can seem hollow and meaningless and yet, everything becomes new again. The one who suffers this loss is the mourner who must travel through the phases of grief. Working through grief is hard work, accomplished over a period of time and made easier when shared with others. The St. Paschal/St Clare Bereavement Support Group can help. WALKING IN HOPE…A BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Each of us grieves the loss of a loved one in a different way; yet, many experiences are common to all. St. Paschal and St. Clare wish to offer support to widows and widowers, parents who have lost a child or anyone who has lost a significant person in their life. A six-week support group will be offered beginning on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. We will meet in the St. Paschal Rectory Parlor from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in a relaxed atmosphere with guest speakers, support materials and refreshments. Come join us and feel free to bring a friend or relative. This support group is open to parishioners and non- parishioners. There is no charge. For more information, contact Barbara Curran at 440- 840-5511, Corky Mondello at 440-449-3584 or the St. Paschal Rectory at 440-442-3410.

CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY

This past week we were all saddened by the death of Tom Gilbrite. On many occasions, Tom drove one of the vans to go feed the homeless. We all enjoyed his sense of humor. Tom’s told me that when Tom’s wife died it was a great loss to him but what helped him in his sadness was volunteering at our ministry. Our faith helps us to see that our loving wants us to reach out in our pain to help those who are also in pain. Let us remember that God is with us now and wants us to care for one another, so that we may become a family to each other. This is what our ministry strives to do and we thank you for your constant generosity. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD. P.S. We are still in need of sneakers from size 8-12. Also, if you need a handyman, contact Deacon Joe at 440-442-3400 ext. 108.

2017 SPRING FLING CORNER 2017 Spring Fling Update - With summer quickly winding down and the end of the “orange barrel construction season” only to be followed by winter, can Spring Fling be far off? The answer is no. Once again we are like a newborn, 9 months out and about to begin our planning process. Luckily unlike a newborn child, we do not have to concern ourselves with health care or education costs. It all begins on September 12 th at 6:30 p.m. in the Sr. Dorothy Kazel room. We are always looking for new faces to add to our core committee. We typically meet monthly for 1-1.5 hours maximum. Please consider attending our kickoff meeting to see if it may pique your interest to join in the fun... Contact Bob Mastrangelo via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 440- 442-2854 for additional information.

EYMARD CORNER WE ARE BACK! Get ready for another great year of Eymard Spiritual Gatherings where we gather to pray, socialize, enjoy good food and learn. If you have never attended, you may want to see what you are missing at one of SPB’s best daytime events. The Eymard Spiritual Group will gather on TUESDAY, September 27, 2016 in the Eymard Room of the Parish Family Center of St. Paschal Baylon Church. 11:00 a.m.-SOCIAL; 11:30 a.m. - St. Peter Julian Eymard Novena; Noon- Potluck Dinner; 1:00 p.m. -Guest Speaker : Terrie Baldwin, Director, Diocese of Cleveland, Office of Evangelization. Angels on the Wire Ollie here, Fishing wasn’t so good this summer. I bought some new fishing tackle but I took it back. Didn’t catch any fish! So I heard Terrie Baldwin was going to speak at this month’s Eymard Spiritual group. She’s going to talk about “Angels.” My mother always said, “Angels watch over you.” I wasn’t sure I needed or wanted all that watching but I wasn’t going to fuss with Mom. The thing about angels is, we see more of them on Christmas cards and such than we actually see in real life. I have not seen one with those wings on or carrying a very large trumpet. But they are out there. Terrie will tell us where they are and I think we may be in for a surprise. Terrie knows a lot of their hiding places. By the way, I am bringing something very special to this event and boy will you be surprised. See you there. We also will be welcoming our ushers who perform a great service to our faith community. They do more for us than carry around a basket. Bring a main dish which is greatly needed or a dessert, enough to serve 6-8 and lunch is free; otherwise, a donation of $5.00 is recommended. FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Due to the Labor Day holiday and publication schedule, these bulletin inserts were prepared August 27.

24 th Week in Ordinary Time: During this LORD’S DAY we also remember the 15 th anniversary of a terrible day in American history. Our Gospel reminds us of the Christian witness of forgiveness and reconciliation. We have seen the cycle of violence throughout history, even among Christian and God- loving people, who do not adhere to God’s loving ways and care for human beings. WE continue to pray for this cycle of hate to end with the inspiration of an all-merciful, all-loving, all- forgiving God.

New This Week: We have been preparing for our pastoral plan goal of having a Marriage Encounter couples retreat weekend, October 8-9. I hope that couples are signing up to take advantage of this retreat, with grandparents and other family members assisting in babysitting. While we have been focusing on this retreat for existing married couples, it’s important to note that the church rolled out an updated liturgy for celebrating marriage. The readings and prayers have been updated; there are new blessings for an engaged couple, blessings for the anniversary of an important anniversary of marriage, new nuptial blessings, more singing, such as the Gloria and a song after the vows and more. Couples preparing for marriage will be the first to prepare and celebrate the new liturgies for the sacrament; as part of our pastoral plan to increase education about church life, now you know too, and will notice some differences as you attend church weddings.

Speaking of Liturgy… In a few days we will be having our first Liturgy Commission Meeting of the “new year.” We are actively recruiting new members to serve on this consultative body for the clergy at SPB and the planning, evaluating and implementing of worship events. It is important to us to have a good representation of parishioners serving with us on this commission. We want people from the pews to join with the coordinators of the different ministries (ushers, lectors, communion ministers, altar servers, art & environment and music). Why don’t you try out a meeting with us and see if it is for you? We only meet for an hour, Monday nights at 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the parlor of the parish offices. See you there Monday, September 19.

Upcoming Annual Events: While it’s only September 11 – it’s important to make sure that you place on your October calendar our regular events to respect life: • October 1/2: Respect Life Sunday • October 2, 1 – 2:00 p.m. on Wilson Mills Road Sidewalk – Respect Life Rally • October 2, 1:30 p.m. Pet Blessing in the Horseshoe Parking Lot Green Space • October 22 – 23: World Mission Sunday – Special Presentation by Dot Teso from the Saint Michael Indian School, Arizona – hear about our partnership for this year with our youth group and LIFE IN THE EUCHARIST TEAM

Sign UP for Leadership Day – All Liturgical Ministers Too! Don’t forget to call in or email your RSVP for attending the retreat night – requested for on a weeknight.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our diocesan legal office has reminded us to remind you – no political materials may be distributed at church. Here is the recent memo: The has an important role to play. As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated, the Catholic Church has a responsibility to “teach fundamental moral principles that help Catholics form their consciences correctly,” “to provide guidance on the moral dimensions of

public decisions,” and “to encourage the faithful to carry out their responsibilities in political life.” Faithful Citizenship , Part I, Paragraph 15. The conference also noted the need to do so without “endorsing or opposing candidates.” Currently, the Internal Revenue Code mandates that an organization exempt from income tax under section 501(a) as described in section 501(c)(3) [such as parishes] may not “participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.” This is an absolute prohibition, and one instance of political campaign intervention could lead to the revocation of tax-exempt status. Practically speaking, the prohibition on political campaign intervention includes the following: • Making statements (through any medium) of support or opposition for a particular candidate, political party, or political action committee (“PAC”). Providing or soliciting financial support to or for any candidate, political party, or PAC. • Providing or soliciting in-kind support to or for any candidate, political party or PAC free use of its facilities, equipment, office supplies, staff, volunteers, etc. • Soliciting signatures for a petition enabling a candidate to appear on the ballot. • Providing loans or loan guarantees to any candidate, political party, or PAC. • Distributing (or permitting the distribution of) voter education materials on parish property (DO NOT PUT ON VEHICLES) that are biased with respect to any candidate, political party or PAC. • There are some restrictions on renting facilities to candidates or political parties. The IRS has opined: “The political campaign activity prohibition isn’t intended to restrict free expression on political matters by leaders of churches or religious organizations speaking for themselves, as individuals. Nor are leaders prohibited from speaking about important issues of public policy. However, for their organizations to remain tax exempt under IRC Section 501(c)(3), religious leaders can’t make partisan comments in official organization publications or at official church functions. To avoid potential attribution of their comments outside of church functions and publications, religious leaders who speak or write in their individual capacity are encouraged to clearly indicate that their comments are personal and not intended to represent the views of the organization.”1 Likewise, pastors and others should not use parish facilities or resources (including parish copy machines, paper, mailing lists, etc.) when participating in political activities.

We have a lot to pray for on this anniversary weekend – for the common good, for love, peace and reconciliation and more. Let’s us continue to pray for each other too!

In Christ our Eucharist,

Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, ’79, Pastor
