PRESS STATEMENT MINISTRY OF HEALTH MALAYSIA UPDATES ON THE CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) SITUATION IN MALAYSIA 23 October 2020 Current Status of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Who Have Recovered The Ministry of Health (MOH) is pleased to inform that today Malaysia reported 467 COVID-19 recovery cases. Therefore, cumulatively, 15,884 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been discharged (64.8% of total cumulative cases). The breakdown of cases that have recovered by state is as follows: • Sabah (246 cases) • Selangor (105 cases) • Kedah (74 cases) • Pulau Pinang (24 cases) • Melaka (7 cases) • Terengganu (4 cases) • Johor (4 cases) • Sarawak (1 case) • Negeri Sembilan (1 case) • Pahang (1 case) Current Situation of COVID-19 in Malaysia Today, Sabah continues to report the highest number of cases at 528 cases (74.4%). This is the result of intensive active case detection carried out in Sabah. The mobilisation of healthcare workers has aided screening efforts in the field as well as delivery of medical treatment. Logistics for sample delivery have also been improved and helped improve turnaround time for RT-PCR tests results. Meanwhile, the states in the Klang Valley reported an additional 73 cases (10.3% of the total cases). Of these, 34 cases (46.6%) are from existing and new clusters. These states as well as Sabah have already been placed under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO). A total of 180 cases (25.4%) reported today are from the Penjara Kepayan Cluster (140 cases), Penjara Reman Cluster (39 cases), and the Tembok Cluster (1 case). One (1) case today was a returnee from Sabah, which makes the number of cases reported to have a history of travel to Sabah since 20 September 2020 is 466 cases. As of 23 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 710 additional confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported to the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) MOH today. Cumulatively there are 24,514 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. Therefore, there are currently 8,416 active and infective COVID-19 cases. They have all been isolated and given treatment. Of the 710 additional cases reported today, Kuala Lumpur reported one (1) imported case who was infected overseas. The case is a non- Malaysian traveller from Nepal. The details of the local transmission COVID-19 cases are as follows: • Sabah: 528 cases o 203 cases from existing active clusters, including 2 cases from a new cluster i.e. Samudera Cluster. o 169 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases. o 156 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • Selangor: 62 cases o 29 cases from existing active clusters, including 10 cases from new clusters i.e. Palma Cluster and Jaya Cluster. o 18 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases. o 1 case from screening of returnees from high-risk areas (Sabah). o 14 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • Pulau Pinang: 39 cases from existing active clusters. • Negeri Sembilan: 37 cases o 28 cases from existing active clusters, including 1 case from a new cluster i.e. Jaya Cluster. o 2 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 7 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • WP Labuan: 19 cases o 16 cases from existing active clusters. o 1 case from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 2 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • Kuala Lumpur: 10 cases o 5 cases from existing active clusters, including 1 case from a new cluster i.e. Palma Cluster. o 2 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 3 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • Perak: 4 cases o 1 case from an existing active cluster. o 3 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • Johor: 4 cases o 1 case from an existing active cluster. o 2 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 1 case from other COVID-19 screenings. • Terengganu: 2 cases o 1 case from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 1 case from other COVID-19 screenings. • Sarawak: 2 cases from other COVID-19 screenings. • Kedah: 1 case from an existing active cluster. • Pahang: 1 case from an existing active cluster. Currently, 90 confirmed COVID-19 cases are receiving treatment in the intensive care units (ICUs), with 28 patients on ventilation support. Regretfully, 10 additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to the National CPRC MOH today. Cumulatively, there are now 214 COVID-19 deaths in Malaysia (0.9% of total cumulative cases). Three (3) New Clusters Reported Today MOH would like to inform that there are three (3) new clusters have been identified today. 1. The Samudera Cluster This new cluster involves the Sandakan district, Sabah. The index case for this cluster (Case 22,612) was detected positive for COVID-19 from symptomatic screening on 20 October 2020 and admitted into the Duchess of Kent Hospital. Screening of close contacts has identified seven (7) additional confirmed COVID-19 cases. As of 23 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 8 individuals have been screened, of which: • 8 confirmed COVID-19 cases (2 additional cases) 2. The Palma Cluster This new cluster involves the Gombak and Hulu Selangor districts in Selangor, and the Kepong district in Kuala Lumpur. The index case for this cluster (Case 20,399) was detected positive for COVID-19 from symptomatic screening on 17 October 2020 and admitted into Sungai Buloh Hospital. Screening of close contacts has identified 12 additional confirmed COVID-19 cases. As of 23 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 101 individuals have been screened, of which: • 13 confirmed COVID-19 cases (9 additional cases) • 88 individuals awaiting result 3. The Jaya Cluster This new cluster involves the Sepang district in Selangor and the Seremban district in Negeri Sembilan. The index case for this cluster was detected positive for COVID-19 from screening at a workplace on 20 October 2020 and admitted into Sungai Buloh Hospital. Screening of close contacts has identified eight (8) additional confirmed COVID-19 cases. As of 23 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 48 individuals have been screened, of which: • Nine (9) confirmed COVID-19 cases (3 additional cases) • 39 individuals awaiting results Health Advisory on COVID-19 MOH advices the public to continue to comply to the recommendations and health advisories that are often emphasised. These advisories must be incorporated as the new normal in our daily life, including: • Avoid the 3Cs: Avoid Crowded places; Confined spaces; and Close conversations. • Practice the 3Ws: Wash hands frequently with water and soap; Wearing facemasks is now mandatory in public areas (starting from 1 August 2020 as directed by the National Security Council) or highly recommended if symptomatic; Warn self and others for the following, in line with MOH’s advisories: o Avoid shaking hands or touching others, including bumping parts of the body in lieu of shaking hands o Practice good coughing and sneezing etiquette o Seek early treatment if symptomatic o Stay at home and avoid from visiting others o Regularly clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces in common areas In addition to the SOPs, continue to adhere to THiS as the new normal: • T: Terms set under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) • Hi: High-risk groups such as children, infants, older adults and the disabled must be protected, and if unwell with symptoms, to seek early treatment • S: Safe physical distancing is practiced at all times, of at least 1 metre away from others MOH will continue to monitor the development of the COVID-19 situation, both in the country as well as internationally, based on available information from the World Health Organization (WHO). The public will be continuously updated on the latest information. In addition, MOH will ensure that appropriate preventive and control measures are continuously implemented. Thank you.
