ISSN (Online): 2349 -1183; ISSN (Print): 2349 -9265 TROPICAL PLANT RESEARCH 5(3): 275–285, 2018 The Journal of the Society for Tropical Plant Research DOI: 10.22271/tpr.2018.v5.i3.035 Research article Fruits seasonality in selected markets at Mont-Ngafula district in Democratic Republic of the Congo: Biodiversity and food values Mike Mukendi Tshibangu, Gédéon Bongo Ngiala, Anthony Kikufi Batoba, Eric Bukaka Wakini Yeto, Koto-te-Nyiwa Ngbolua, Henry Mbale Kunzi and Félicien Lukoki Luyeye* Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Kinshasa, B.P. 190, Kinshasa XI, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo *Corresponding Author: [email protected] [Accepted: 15 October 2018] Abstract: Fruit seasonality remains so far one of the priorities of agricultural research and development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, due to the lack of reliable statistics and a schedule, it seems unappreciated and underestimated. This situation limits the prospect of fruit resource promotion and justifies the initiation of the current study of which the objective was to assess the biodiversity and fruit food value available according to the season in Kinshasa. The survey was carried out between January and June 2016 in the Lukunga district, particularly in Mont-Ngafula township where 100 vendors of fruits in selected markets of this township were interviewed. In the current survey, about twenty fruits sold on these markets were recorded and these fruits belong to 22 families dominated by Anacardiaceae and Rutaceae families. It was observed that the greater varieties of fruits were available in February than in June. It was noted that papaya, banana, coconut and apples were present from January to June while mangosteens, fewer passion fruits, rambutan and pink apples were only present in January and February.

Discovered in 1903, the disease is endemic in all provinces. Ivermectin was introduced in 1987 as clinical treatment, then as mass treatment in 1989. Created in 1996, the NPOC is based on community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI). In 1999, rapid epidemiological mapping for onchocerciasis surveys were launched to determine the mass treatment areas called “CDTI Projects”. CDTI started in 2001 and certain projects were stopped in 2005 following the occurrence of serious adverse events. Surveys coupled with rapid assessment procedures for loiasis and onchocerciasis rapid epidemiological assessment were launched to identify the areas of treatment for onchocerciasis and loiasis.

  • Witchcraft, Violence and Everyday Life: an Ethnographic Study of Kinshasa
WITCHCRAFT, VIOLENCE AND EVERYDAY LIFE: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF KINSHASA A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY BY SILVIA DE FAVERI COLLEGE OF BUSINESS, ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION OF ANTHROPOLOGY BRUNEL UNIVERSITY OCTOBER 2014 Abstract The inhabitants of Kinshasa, who call themselves Kinois, deal with insecurity and violence on a daily basis. Cheating and thefts are commonplace, and pillaging by street gangs and robberies by armed thieves are everyday occurrences. The state infrastructure is so poorly regulated that deaths by accident or medical negligence are also common. This, and much more, contributes to a challenging social milieu within which the Kinois’ best hope is simply to ‘make do’. This thesis, based on extensive fieldwork in Kinshasa, analyses different forms of violence which affect the Kinois on a daily basis. I argue that the Kinois’ concept of violence, mobulu, differs from Western definitions, which define violence as an intrinsically negative and destructive force. Mobulu is for the Kinois a potentially constructive phenomenon, which allows them to build relationships, coping strategies and new social phenomena. Violence is perceived as a transformative force, through which people build meaningful lives in the face of the hardship of everyday life. Broadly speaking, this thesis contributes to the Anthropology of violence which has too often focused on how violence is imposed upon a population, often from a structural level of a state and its institutions. Such an approach fails to account for the nuances of alternate perspectives of what ‘violence’ is, as evidenced in this thesis through the prism of the Kinois term mobulu.

RAPPORT SPECIAL BUREAU DES NATIONS UNIES POUR LES DROITS Janvier 2008 DE L’HOMME EN REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO ENQUETE SPECIALE SUR LES EVENEMENTS DE MARS 2007 A KINSHASA 1 UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIES United Nations Organization Mission in the Mission de l’Organisation des Nations Unies en Democratic Republic of the Congo République démocratique du Congo ENQUETE SPECIALE SUR LES EVENEMENTS DE MARS 2007 A KINSHASA RESULTATS PRELIMINAIRES 1.0 Résumé 1.
