It examines the development of ideas of collectivism and individualism in Russian society, focusing on the cultural aspects based on the examples of selected works from Russian literature. It also searches for the answers in the philosophical works of Vladimir Solovyov, Nicolas Berdyaev and Vladimir Lossky. -

DeBlasio, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2010 This dissertation takes as its primary task the evaluation of a conflict of paradigms in Russian philosophical thought in the past decade. If until the early nineties Russian philosophers were often guilty of uncritically attributing to their domestic philosophy a set of characteristics that fell along the lines of a religious/secular binary (e.g. literary vs. analytic; continuous vs. ruptured), in recent years the same scholarship is moving away from the nineteenth-century model of philosophy as a “path” or “special mission,” as it has been called by Konstantin Aksakov, Aleksei Khomiakov, Ivan Kireevskii, and later, Nikolai Berdiaev, among others. -

The air of tolerance and wealth built on trade has enabled culture, science, and the Arts to flourish in the city for centuries. Today, Gdańsk remains a key meeting place and major tourist attraction in Poland. While the city boasts historic sites of enchanting beauty, it also has a major historic and social importance. In addition to its 1000-year history, the city is the place where the Second World War broke out as well as the birthplace of Solidarność, the Solidarity movement, which led to the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. The European Solidarity Centre www.ecs.gda.pl The European Solidarity Centre is a multifunctional institution combining scientific, cultural and educational activities with a modern museum and archive, which documents freedom movements in the modern history of Poland and Europe. The Centre was established in Gdańsk on November 8th 2007. Its new building was opened in 2014 on the anniversary of the August Accords signed in Gdańsk between the worker’s union “Solidarność” and communist authorities in 1980. The Centre is meant to be an agora, a space for people and ideas that build and develop a civic society, a meeting place for people who hold the world’s future dear. The mission of the Centre is to commemorate, maintain and popularise the heritage and message of the Solidarity movement and the anti-communist democratic op- position in Poland and throughout the world. -

THE SLAV RECEPTION OF GREGORY OF NYSSA’S WORKS: AN OVERVIEW OF EARLY SLAVONIC TRANSLATIONS Lara Sels Although a lot has been written about the “translatio” of Byzantine Christianity in the mediaeval Slavia orthodoxa, advancing a critical assessment of the Slav reception of the Greek Fathers remains a pre- carious undertaking. Although the mere listing of patristic texts in Slavonic translation obviously falls short of the demands of the sub- ject, a notion of the corpus of translated texts is called for.1 The modest aim of the present article, which deals with the reception of Gregory of Nyssa among the orthodox Slavs, is first and foremost to establish the nature and the range of the material reception of his writings by means of an overview of Old Slavonic translations of his works and of substantiated traces of influence of his writings on Slavonic texts, from the time of the Moravian mission (863) throughout the Slav Middle Ages and up to the 16th century.2 After the Moravian Mission and the ensuing Cyrillomethod- ian period during which liturgical texts and parts of the Bible were made available for the Christianization of the Slavs,3 the next locus of 1 Research into Slavonic translation literature is often hampered by practical obsta- cles such as the poor cataloguing of Slavonic manuscripts, erroneous ascriptions of texts both in manuscripts and manuscript catalogues, a lack of comprehensive inven- tories and incipitaria etc.; cf. Although He S is God (together with the Father and the Holy Spirit), He became a man—or, as we often put it, He became incarnate —enfleshed. Mankind, at its very beginning in Adam and Eve, had fallen away from Divine life by embracing sin, and had fallen under the power of death. But the Lord Jesus, by His incarnation, death upon the Cross, and subsequent resurrection from death on the third day, destroyed the power death had over men. By His teaching and His whole saving work, Christ reconciled to God a humanity that had grown distant from God1 and had become ensnared in sins.2 He abolished the authority the Devil had acquired over men3 and He renewed and re-created both mankind and His whole universe.4 Bridging the abyss separating man and God, by means of the union of man and God in His own Person, Christ our Saviour opened the way to eternal, joyful life after death for all who would accept it.5 Not all the people of Judea, the Hebrews, God’s chosen people (Deut 7:6; Is 44:1), were ready to hear this news, and so our Lord spoke to them mostly in parables and figures. -

It first studies the peculiar features of Maximus’s Neochalcedonian christology in order to understand what he means by “Incarnation” (Chapter 1). It then discovers this same logic operative in Maximus’s protology (Chapter 2) and eschatology (Chapter 3). I therefore conclude that Maximus’s declaration, “The Word of God, very God, wills that the mystery of his Incarnation be actualized always and in all things” (Amb 7.22), ought to be interpreted literally. Monastic worldview of Paisii Velichkovskii 7 PERSPEC†IVA Legnickie Studia Teologiczno-Historyczne Rok XIII 2014 nr 2 (25) s. 7–23 Adam Drozdek MONASTIC WORLDVIEW OF PAISII VELICHKOVSKII Petr Velichkovskii was born in 1722, the youngest son of the archpriest of Polta- va. He attended a parochial school and in 1735 he enrolled in the Kiev Academy. Attracted from early years to the monastic life and dissatisfied with what the Aca- demy had to offer, he left it in 1739 and started his wanderings in the Ukraine in search of spiritual guidance. In 1741, he became a rhasophore, a novice monk, in the St. Nicholas Monastery (the Medvedovskii Monastery) and assumed the name of Porfirii which was soon changed to Platon. In 1743, he went to Moldavia to continue his spiritual quest. Dissatisfied, in 1746, he moved to Greece, to the mo- nastic community in Mount Athos. For four years he lived in solitude. He became a monk and changed his name again to Paisii. Then gradually, he became surro- unded by disciples. In 1758, he was ordained to the priesthood. As part of getting back to spiritual sources, he started to correct Slavonic translations of patristic writings. Because of limitations of space of the Prophet Elijah skete and because of harassment by the Turkish authorities, in 1763, he moved with his disciples to Moldavian monastery of the Holy Spirit in Dragomirna. He continued correcting Slavonic translations by comparing them to the Greek originals. In 1775, he moved to the Secu (Sekul) monastery in Moldavia to be out of reach of the newly estab- lished Austrian authorities, and, in 1779, he was ordered to move to the Neamţ (Niamets) monastery, also in Moldavia. -

THE CHURCH, EMPIRE AND THE MODERN STATE The second decade of the 21st century, which has been especially rich in events of great impor- tance to the Church, gives us a privileged position from which to try to outline a contemporary view of issues that are key to modern man—and, therefore, fundamental to theology, philosophy, and literature. The specific nature of Russian religious philosophy allows us to build a more complete interpretation of the contemporary world by avoiding the increasingly obvious tricks of modern positivist thought, and to explore the theological and philosophical intuitions of Russian thinkers, which with the passing of time seem to be ever more current and on the mark.
