    IOANA SAVU GRUIŢĂ1 ON THE CREATION OF PAINTER OCTAVIAN SMIGELSCHI TOWARDS A REASSESSMENT OF LANDSCAPE “I do not know if nature is beautiful or ugly, good or bad from a philosophical standpoint, for at all times it produces wonderful things, which attract your attention; beings whose life may be studied, this being, of course, a very interesting occupation.”2 Abstract: The article deals with some aspects of the landscape painting of Octavian Smigelschi (1866- 1912), starting from the extensive study written by Iulia Mesea: Peisagişti din sudul Transilvaniei între tradiţional şi modern. Our contribution consists in bringing some additional information about the genesis of the artist’s works. I consider that correlated with image analysis, biographical information can provide a new dimension to Smigelschi’s landscapes, which were created in two major temporal stages, the first lasting between 1886 and 1900 and the second from 1905 to 1906. I insist both on the message underlying the works and on identifying the Western European influences on the artist. I believe that some of these works are indebted to John Ruskin’s theories, while others, with a documentary purpose, were achieved under the influence of the monographic studies that dominated the period and, especially, under the influence of Professor Stefan Gróh, yet others being echoes of Jugendstil. However, he created numerous works in this artistic genre.     The Greek-Catholic Discourse of Identity in the Inter-War Period: The Relation between the Nation and People’s Religious Confession Ciprian Ghişa ”Babeş-Bolyai” University Abstract: The Greek-Catholic Discourse of Identity in the Inter-War Period: The Relation between the Nation and People’s Religious Confession. This paper aims to analyze the question of the confessional identity, focusing on one of its main constitutive elements: the relation between the nation and people’s religious confession. The national identity and the confessional one have numerous common characteristics, influencing each other more or less depending on the historical evolution of events. These aspects are more profound in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-confessional environment, as otherness is one of the strongest factors that defines and strengthens the confessional as well as the national identity. This was also the case of the Greek- Catholic Church in Romania, in the inter-war period, taking into consideration its new status after the Union of 1918: a minority church in a country with an Orthodox majority. Its relation of otherness with the Romanian Orthodox Church also influenced its relation with the state and therefore it determined also the structure and the intensity of its discourse of identity. Among the most important themes of this discourse we can mention: the Greek-Catholic Church is the church of the forefathers; this Church, its faith and its believers are Romanian; the Union with Rome brought the Romanian people a lot of benefices

The middle part from Buda to Belgrade was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. These territories suffered much in the 16th century because of the wars between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Turks. Therefore, we do not have many historical resources from this period. The territory of South Bačka was a war zone many times from 1526 to 1606, where the Habsburgs, Hungarians and Ottoman Turks fought many battles. The aim of this study is to represent these struggles between Christians and Muslim Turks, focusing on the territories of the early modern Counties of Bač and Bodrog. Moreover, we are going to analyse the consequences of these wars for the population and economy of the mentioned counties.     ART REVIEW AS REFLECTED BY THE ROMANIAN PRESS (1900-1914) - Abstract - The doctoral thesis is structured according to five major units: Introduction, the six central chapters, Conclusions, References and Appendices. The paper has a total of 260 pages, of which 216 pages are the text itself, with 891 footnotes. In the Introduction I presented the reasons for choosing the subject of the paper, reminding the most important studies and research previously developed in the relevant historiography. Also, I mentioned the methods used and I listed the main cultural magazines analysed for the period between 1900 and 1914. The analysed Romanian press included both cultural magazines from the former kingdom (“Convorbiri literare”, “Noua Revistă Română”, “Sămănătorul”, “Viața Românească”, “Furnica”, “Flacăra”, etc.), as well as magazines from Transylvania (“Luceafărul”, “Transilvania”, “Țara Noastră”, “Telegraful Român”, etc.). On the other hand, I attempted a comparative analysis of the Romanian press and the western press in terms of art reviews. For this purpose I chose prestigious foreign art magazines of the time, consulted on the occasion of the mobility period spent in Italy, such as “Emporium”, “Vita d’arte”, “Il Giornale d’Italia”, “Il Marzocco”, “La Stampa”, etc. Also, I studied the funds of the International Exhibition in Rome in 1911, in which our country participated as well, the delegation of which was conducted by Al. Tzigara-Samurcaș, found in the central state archives in Rome. The second part of the thesis includes the actual research, where Chapters 1-6 are the original contribution of the author. In I. Social and Cultural Context in the Early Twentieth Century for the Romanian Elite I presented briefly the cultural and social framework in which the Romanian artists lived, were educated and created, as reflected in the press.

THE LIFE AND THE ACTIVITY OF BISHOP VASILE MOGA (1774-1845) AS REFLECTED IN THE ROMANIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY Mihai-Octavian Groza, Iuliu-Marius Morariu, Diana-Maria Dãian ,,Babeş-Bolyai” University Cluj-Napoca, Romania Abstract: The life and the activity of bishop Vasile Moga (1774-1845) were briefly analysed in the Romanian historiography both because of the absence of some systematic researches on the archivist material existing in Romania and abroad and also due to the rich activity developed by his successor, the bishop and afterwards archbishop and metropolitan Andrei, baron of Şaguna. His figure was analysed after his contribution to the development of the Romanian education, to the improvement of the moral-religious life of the eparchy, to the national-political fight of the Transylvanian Romanians and less after his contributions to the institutional realities, the organization of the bishopric, the relation with the archpriestships and the eparchies, constituting a lack of the historiography that remains to be solved. We will aim through our study, based on the analysis of the Romanian writings dedicated to the life and the activity of bishop Vasile Moga, at capturing the main phases and research directions as well as its significations hoping that this modest study will focus the attention of the historians and theologians in order to make this honest hierarch, unduly marginalized come into prominence. The historiographical passages referring to bishop Vasile Moga‟s life and activity demonstrated the fact that over time he was an ,,aggrieved” of the historical writing compared to his successor, Andrei Şaguna.

    UN SPIRIT NOVATOR: OCTAVIAN SMIGELSCHI NEGOIŢA LAPTOIU Judecată din perspectiva obiectivată a timpului de astăzi, perso­ nalitatea pictorului Octavian Smigelschi ne apare cu atît mai proemi­ nentă, cu cit ea s-a -afirmat înfruntînd opreliştile multiple ale unei am­ biante de o tristă mediocritare. Activ în Transivania anilor 1885-1912, nu s-a mulţumit cu simpla acomodare la convenţiile rutiniere ale epocii absolutismului dualist, ci s-a lăsat animat de freamătul unor energii care vizau „crearea unei noi arte monumentale, de un caracter naţio­ nal-românesc, nu numai bisericesc, ci şi profan "1• Se născuse la 21 martie 1866, în localitatea Ludoş de lingă Sibiu, unde tatăl său (descendent al unei familii nobile polone, refugiat în Transilvania după evenimentele din 1848/49) îndeplinea funcţia de pri­ mar. Octavian ( al treilea din cei patru fii ai familiei Smigelschi) moş­ tenise - după cum inspirat se exprimase Octavian Tăslăuanu - ,,mo­ destia (... ) şi poezia sufletului românesc al mamei"2, Ana Sebastian.     Study of Romanian Pilgrimage Tourism Products – A Cultural Behavior Approach Letiția Adina NEGRUȘA1 Valentin TOADER2 Liviu VIDICAN-MANCI3 Abstract This study will concentrate on the Romanian pilgrimage tourism supply, in order to identify the characteristics of pilgrimage products. Using the Hofstede’s approach for Romanian society, we develop a meta-analysis and a systematic review of the most important research studies done on this topic for Romanian culture. As a result, we have determined the weight of each cultural dimension and their effects on the religious tourism and pilgrimage behavior. We correlate the findings from Hofstede’s theory with the data about the supply of pilgrimages in our country: main pilgrimage routes, services provided by the hospitality units, seasonality, length of stay, tourism and religious objectives the pilgrims may visit. The collectivism tendency and high uncertainty avoidance represent the main cultural aspects having an influence on pilgrims’ behavior and on the Romania’s supply of pilgrimages. As a result, most of the pilgrimages are concentrated in few destinations with a strong spiritual sense for an orthodox, have a small length of stay, while the services provided are customized to fulfill the pilgrims’ basic needs and emphasize the idea of sharing resources between pilgrims. The presence of a priest as a spiritual guide may lead to an improved pilgrimage experience. Keywords: Hofstede’s dimensions, cultural behavior, pilgrimage, religious tourism, supply. The Italian psychiatrist Claudio Rise emphasized that pilgrimage is not a spiritual fitness, but the demonstration of human need to find out for themselves the answers to the great questions of existence, starting on the go to a certain destination.
