CHAPTER 11 Tameer Bank’s Experiences with Mobile Banking Shahid Mustafa1 Although Pakistan has several dynamic metropolitan centers, the majority of the population lives in rural areas, much of it far away from urban settlements. The rural population, predominantly poor, is widely unserved by the formal financial sector. This article explores how Tameer Bank aims to serve the rural poor by em- ploying modern communication technologies: The mobile phone is the corner- stone of Tameer Bank’s approach to outreach into the countryside. 1 Access to Finance: The Case of Pakistan The population of Pakistan is about 175 million, making it the sixth most popu- lous country in the world. The rural population is almost 64 percent of the total population. However, historically, the rural sector has suffered from policy neglect and the weak implementation of delivery systems for financial services. The services provided have been inadequate, inconvenient, and unaffordable. In relative terms, most attention has been paid to the provision of agricultural credit and the mobilization of deposits from wealthy people in rural areas. The provision of insurance, credit for non-farm purposes and for the landless and small farmers, and the mobilization of savings of the poor and the poorest in rural areas have not received much attention from policymakers. The lack of appropriate saving products, the almost total absence of insurance, limited access to credit for the poor and rural, non-farm activities, and an inefficient payments system has de- prived rural people of productive employment, as well as high and broadband growth. As a consequence, the rural economy is mired in a vicious circle of low growth, low productivity, low savings, weak employment generation, and rising poverty.2 1 Tameer Bank. -

Collectively, they inspire our teams and steer the success of our business. 36 Management Team Profile Mr. Yasir Azman was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from 01 February 2020. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) from 26 May 2017. He also served as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) from 15 June 2015. Mr. Azman is an experienced professional with vast international experience in multiple countries and cultures. Before joining as CMO Grameenphone, Mr. Azman served as Telenor Group’s Head of Distribution & eBusiness and worked across all Telenor Operations. He has also worked in Telenor India operations as EVP & Circle Business Head for Orissa and Karnataka circles during 2010-2012. In his previous tenure in Grameenphone, Mr. Azman played a leading role to set up Grameenphone sales and distribution organisation and to transform Grameenphone distribution structure. As a CMO in Grameenphone, Mr. Azman has transformed Grameenphone towards a high performing and a digital-centric organisation. Throughout his career, Mr. Azman has a proven track record as a leader in transformation, change management and Yasir Azman business development. In this term paper we at first gave an overview of the corporate background and corporate history of Grameen Phone. They have mainly four types of service offerings those are Smile prepaid for the mass customers, Explore postpaid for the high income earners, Djuice for the youth segment, Business solution for the businessmen and executives, Public Phone for the urban low income segment, Village Phone for the Rural lower income segment and so on. Their product designing and market segmentation was appropriate enough to meet the customers needs and wants. Their all products perfectly match with their target customers income level, life style, profession. In case of pricing they follow value based pricing. Their pricing strategy is also appropriate and reasonable for their target markets income level. They also chose the right promotional tools to reach the customers more quickly and efficient way. For example they set bit higher price for the Business solution uses and explore users, as they are the higher income groups. They set bit lower prices for the village phone and public phone, as they are within the lower income segments. They also chose the right promotional tools to reach the customers more quickly and efficient way. Their distributing systems were appropriate enough to reach their products to the target customers more quicker way. They also provide some value added services. Those are sms based alert services , voice based services, infotainment services, innovative services (like Cell Bazaar), message service, Customer care related services and so on. -

Each of the three partners holds one third of the shares. Telenordia provides national and international telecommunications services primarily for medium-sized business customers. A wide range of voice and data services, including international telecommunications services, are provided through the Concert cooperation and NordiCom services. Telenordia experienced substantial growth in Internet activities in 1997. The number ofsubscribers was 115,400 at the end of 1997, compared with 33,500 a year ago. At year-end 1997, the company had 382 employees, and 1997 net revenues amounted to SEK 681 Am, which is an increase of 240% compared to the 1996 revenues. Additional funds were invested in Telenordia in 1997 and, at year end, Tele Danmark's share ofthe total capital investment amounted to DKK 419.4m. In 1997, Telenordia AB acquired the company Tele 8 Kontakt AB from Tele 8 AB, whereby Telenordia took over the license to build and operate a GSM 1800 cellular communications system in Sweden. The company InterNordia Communications AB, which is owned on an equal basis by Tele Danmark and Telenor, provides equipment for voice and data communications. 1997 revenues amoented to SEK 98.6m. and the company had 61 employees at year end. Telenor Acquires 50 Per Cent of Telenordia
Telenor acquires 50 per cent of Telenordia Telenor and BT have entered into an agreement to acquire TeleDanmarks shares in Telenordia. Telenordia is Swedens fourth largest telecom operator with more than 300,000 customers. Telenors part of the acquisition amounts to approximately NOK 1.24 billion. Following completion of this transaction, Telenor will own 50 per cent of Telenordia. Telenor and BT will acquire 50 per cent each of TeleDanmarks 33.33 per cent stake. This means that Telenor and BT will each own 50 per cent of Telenordia. Telenordia, which commenced business operations in 1995, is today the fourth largest telecom operator in Sweden with more than 400,000 customers in the field of fixed line, data and Internet for the business market and public sector. The company had a turnover of more than SEK 1.5 billion in 1999. Growth prospective "During the past five years, Telenordia has expanded to become the fourth-largest telecommunications operator and the third-largest fixed line operator in Sweden. This is an exceptional achievement. Telenordia has become a well recognized brand in Sweden and has shown a strong growth potential within its existing business areas," said Telenors CEO Tormod Hermansen. "We are excited to have increased our share in Telenordia to 50 per cent. Combined with our strong position in Norway and Denmark, this investment strengthens our position as one of the leading telecom companies in Scandinavia," Hermansen added.
