Saint Anselm, Blessed John Henry Newman, and the Idea of a Benedictine University Fr. Daniel Patrick Moloney, Ph.D. John Henry Newman's "Benedictine Essays" develop a strong thesis that Benedictine spirituality is necessarily at odds with the methods of the modern university. Benedictine spiritual life encourages the monk to mortify his intellect, not to satisfy it or to stir it up. It is best suited to grammar school, to the study of literature and history and Scripture, while rejecting the value of studying worldly topics that don't prepare a person for union with God in the next life. Newman's account makes the project of a Benedictine university like St. Anselm's College seem deeply problematic, even oxymoronic. St. Anselm of Canterbury, a transitional figure on Newman's account, shows some ways of reconciling a speculative intellectual life with Benedictine spirituality, but Newman's challenge to the project still remains. It’s a great honor to be here. When I was invited to give this lecture, that is to give the Saint Anselm Lecture at Saint Anselm College on the Feast of Saint Anselm, I thought I noticed a theme. I’m an expert on Saint Anselm, having written my dissertation on your patron saint and having been studying him since I was a senior in college more than twenty years ago. So I figured that the topic of my talk was going to be Saint Anselm. But then I read the fine print of the invitation, and realized that because this year is the anniversary of the College, that I was being asked to talk not just about Saint Anselm and his continued significance, but about something I didn’t know anything about, namely “distinctively Benedictine Catholic higher education.” I’m sure that’s a topic of some reflection here, at a Benedictine College, but it’s not something I’ve ever thought about. -

Peter Chalmers Vol. I P.176- In Steven‟s History of the ancient Abbeys, Monasteries, &c. of England, vol. i. fol. 1722, there is a Life of St Benedict, and an account of that order, and its rules, from which it appears that there were connected with the order as members of it, not less than 48 popes from St Boniface IV to Gregory XII inclusive; 11 emperors, who resigned their dignity, and became of the order of St Benedict, from the year 725 to 1039; 9 empresses; 10 queens, one of whom was Maud, Queen of England, grandchild of Malcolm Canmore; 20 kings (besides 11 others, an emperors, who submitted to the rule); 8 princes, sons of do; 15 dukes of Venice, Italy &c.; 13 earls, besides many other persons of different ranks. There are inserted in the column also two bulls in favour of the order, one by Pope Gregory, and the other, its confirmation by Pope Zachary I. 2 The monastery of Dunfermline is generally thought to have been ony a Priory till the reign of David I, and to have been raised by him to the rank of an Abbey, on the occasion of his bringing thirteen monks from Canterbury; which, on the supposition of the previous occupants being Culdees, was intended to reconcile them to the new order of things. -

The Holy See BENEDICT XVI GENERAL AUDIENCE Paul VI Audience Hall Wednesday, 23 September 2009 [Video] Saint Anselm Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Benedictine Abbey of Sant'Anselmo [St Anselm] is located on the Aventine Hill in Rome. As the headquarters of an academic institute of higher studies and of the Abbot Primate of the Confederated Benedictines it is a place that unites within it prayer, study and governance, the same three activities that were a feature of the life of the Saint to whom it is dedicated: Anselm of Aosta, the ninth anniversary of whose death occurs this year. The many initiatives promoted for this happy event, especially by the Diocese of Aosta, have highlighted the interest that this medieval thinker continues to rouse. He is also known as Anselm of Bec and Anselm of Canterbury because of the cities with which he was associated. Who is this figure to whom three places, distant from one another and located in three different nations Italy, France, England feel particularly bound? A monk with an intense spiritual life, an excellent teacher of the young, a theologian with an extraordinary capacity for speculation, a wise man of governance and an intransigent defender of libertas Ecclesiae, of the Church's freedom, Anselm is one of the eminent figures of the Middle Ages who was able to harmonize all these qualities, thanks to the profound mystical experience that always guided his thought and his action. St Anselm was born in 1033 (or at the beginning of 1034) in Aosta, the first child of a noble family. -

Contested Consecrations and the Pursuit of Ecclesiastical Independence in Scotland and Ireland in the Early 1120s Abstract This article investigates two comparable crises of leadership in Gaelic Christendom which occurred around the same time, in 1120-1; these culminated in failed episcopal appointments for St. Andrews and Dublin. The article is based on accounts from Scotland and Ireland which shed light on the developments in both countries; and on Historia Nouorum in Anglia (‘History of Recent Events in England’) by Eadmer, biographer and confidant of Anselm (archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 until his death in 1109). Eadmer was the principal contemporary first-hand witness to events in this period, but his evidence is somewhat problematic. There are few substantial comparative discussions of Scottish and Irish ecclesiastical developments in the 1120s; in addition, the work of Eadmer needs fuller consideration regarding Canterbury’s relationships with Gaelic churches. Eadmer’s depiction of the St. Andrews situation is especially significant because he himself was the bishop-elect. I assess how these crises arose, and how they caused the relationships between Gaelic churches and Canterbury to become highly strained. I aim to show that leaders in Scotland and Ireland undertook the pursuit of ecclesiastical independence in very different ways; and that both failed appointments, though eventually prompting a degree of independence, resulted in short-term stagnation. 2 Keywords Canterbury, Dublin, Eadmer, episcopal consecration, Gregorian reform, St Andrews Two crises of leadership occurred on opposite sides of the Irish Sea in 1120-1; both culminated in failed episcopal appointments, and caused relations between Gaelic Christendom and Canterbury to become highly strained.
