HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

  • A Critical Sociological Inquiry Into the Aboriginal Art Phenomenon
Hope, Ethics and Disenchantment: a critical sociological inquiry into the Aboriginal art phenomenon by Laura Fisher A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD (Sociology) University of NSW 2012 ii PLEASE TYPE THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: Fisher First name: Laura Other name/s: Abbreviation for degree as given in the University calendar: PhD (Sociology) School: Social Sciences and International Studies Faculty: Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Title: Hope, Ethics and Disenchantment: a critical sociological inquiry into the Aboriginal art phenomenon Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art art has come to occupy a significant space in the Australian cultural landscape. It has also achieved international recognition as one of the most interesting aesthetic movements of recent decades and has become highly valuable within the art market. Yet there is much that remains obscure about Aboriginal art. It seems at once unstoppable and precarious: an effervescent cultural renaissance that is highly vulnerable to malign forces. This thesis brings a critical sociological perspective to bear upon the unruly character of the Aboriginal art phenomenon. It adopts a reflexive and interdisciplinary approach that brings into dialogue scholarship from several fields, including anthropology of art, art history and criticism, post-colonial critique, sociology of art and culture, theories of modernity, theories of cross-cultural brokerage and Australian political history. By taking this approach, the thesis is able to illuminate the intellectual and aesthetic practices, social movements and political events that have been constitutive of Aboriginal art‟s meaning and value from the late 19th Century to the present.

AMS Boston 2019 Abstracts 48 Thursday Afternoon 2:15–3:45 AMS Boston 2019 Thursday Afternoon 2:15–3:45 Band Cultures Colin Roust (University of Kansas), Chair Schubert in America: An Examination of Band Programming in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries Kate Storhoff (Wake Forest University) American musical life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was a time of change in both repertory and performing forces. By the mid-1800s audiences enjoyed the works of European composers through the programming of American and European orchestra conductors, including Louis Jullien and Theodore Thomas. Among the composers they programmed was Franz Schubert, about whose life and works John Sullivan Dwight published an article in 1852 to fuel the mid-century public interest in the composer. This attention continued throughout the second half of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Though some audience members became familiar with Schubert through performances of his songs, chamber mu- sic, and the “Great C Major” and “Unfinished” symphonies in their original forms, many others were exposed to his music through arrangements for band. Examining where and how Schubert was programmed by two of the most prominent band- leaders of the time, John Philip Sousa and Edwin Franko Goldman, reveals insight into how Schubert was regarded by both conductors and audiences. In addition to program analysis, I consider three of the most popular surviving arrangements: Louis-Philippe Laurendeau’s arrangement of the two Marche Militaire (1900), Vin- cent Frank Safranek’s arrangement of the Ballet Music from Rosamunde (1919), and Lucien Cailliet’s arrangement of the first movement of the “Unfinished” Symphony (1938).
