Lewis DeLuca, coordinator of Student Financial Literacy and Advising, said this can have a big impact on students because there is an increase in tuition, he said students can be looking at hundreds of more dollars in tuition fees for the fall. “Right now,” said DeLuca, “we are looking at $10,054 a year. If we go up four percent, it will be $10,456. This is over a $400 increase.” DeLuca talked about students who are living on campus as well. As of now, a student who lives on campus for the 2016-17 year is paying $12,025. Rosayln Amenta, assistant to the dean of Student Affairs and moderator of the event, said the theme of the panel was to show unity. “We are all one, interlocked in faith,” said Amenta. The Interfaith dialogue – which had speakers for Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, and Christianity – was created to find similarities in the religions instead of focusing on differences, she said.

I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

His early work focused on the politics of language use in Israel, published as the 2004 Oxford University Press book, Words and Stones: The Politics of Language and Identity in Israel. More recent work on the sociolinguistics of Hollywood cinema has been published as a 2005 Semiotica essay, “On the Relation between Sound and Meaning in Hicks’ Snow Falling on Cedars.” Abstract: This essay contrasts the visual hyper-presence of racial diversity in Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy to its aural absence, arguing that two episodes from the show’s 2nd season construct diametrically opposed visions of the role of white and black forms of non-standard speech. While non-standard forms of language that construct blackness are – when they appear at all on the show – condemned as obstacles to the medical outcomes the show valorizes, non-standard forms of language that construct working-class whiteness appear frequently on the show, and are recuperated by the plots and characters. The sociolinguistic patterns thus re-instate hegemonic ideas about race that the color-blind casting Rhimes is famous for seeks to subvert. During her gynecological exam, the woman screams in pain and is diagnosed with vulvodynia. With the help of Hollywood magic, Montgomery and her partner cure the condition and the elated couple’s honeymoon begins. “While the producers deserve credit for trying to depict the symptoms of vulvodynia, 13 million women in the real world would painfully disagree with the show’s fairy tale ending,” comments Phyllis Mate, President of the National Vulvodynia Association ( www.nva.org). This isn’t the first time popular television has inaccurately portrayed the condition. In a 2001 episode of HBO’s Sex and the City, Kristin Davis’ character, Charlotte, complains to her gynecologist of burning pain “down there” and is diagnosed with vulvodynia. The gynecologist prescribes an antidepressant and Charlotte is miraculously cured by the end of the episode! In reality, vulvodynia, or chronic pain in the external vaginal area, is a highly prevalent condition that is difficult to treat. It is often misdiagnosed as a yeast infection and the cause(s) is unclear. Although there are treatments that provide some pain relief, there is no cure. In many cases, vulvodynia destroys marriages.
