Krell Guidance: Mikael Males Master Thesis in Nordic Viking and Medieval Culture Summary The poetry of Bragi inn Gamli and Einarr Skúlason has been thoroughly studied by many Old Norse scholars, but never directly in comparison to one another. This paper will investigate the nuances of each author’s verse, specifically regarding the way in which they utilize kennings, and draw conclusions based upon their similarities and differences. Both Bragi and Einarr composed within the same language, geographical area, and poetic tradition; they used similar kenning types that evolve from pagan imagery; and each describes a precious weapon given to them by a ruler whom they praise via a traditional skaldic long style poem. However, they could not be more different. This is due to the fact that Einarr’s kennings are meant to show his scholastic prowess, and Bragi’s are meant to affect his audience and move his plot based verse forward. The poetry of Bragi Boddason makes use of pagan mythology, ekphrasis, nýgerving, ofljóst and metaphors in the form of kennings, just as the poetry of Einarr Skúlason does. And yet the poems differ so greatly. Bragi’s kennings are meant to affect his audience on an emotional level, whereas Einarr’s are meant to impress on a scholarly level. The Prose Edda
THE PROSE EDDA SNORRI STURLUSON (1179–1241) was born in western Iceland, the son of an upstart Icelandic chieftain. In the early thirteenth century, Snorri rose to become Iceland’s richest and, for a time, its most powerful leader. Twice he was elected law-speaker at the Althing, Iceland’s national assembly, and twice he went abroad to visit Norwegian royalty. An ambitious and sometimes ruthless leader, Snorri was also a man of learning, with deep interests in the myth, poetry and history of the Viking Age. He has long been assumed to be the author of some of medieval Iceland’s greatest works, including the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, the latter a saga history of the kings of Norway. JESSE BYOCK is Professor of Old Norse and Medieval Scandinavian Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Professor at UCLA’s Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. A specialist in North Atlantic and Viking Studies, he directs the Mosfell Archaeological Project in Iceland. Prof. Byock received his Ph.D. from Harvard University after studying in Iceland, Sweden and France. His books and translations include Viking Age Iceland, Medieval Iceland: Society, Sagas, and Power, Feud in the Icelandic Saga, The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki and The Saga of the Volsungs: The Norse Epic of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer. Trees as a Central Theme in Norse Mythology and Culture An Archaeological Perspective AMANDA GILMORE ABSTRACT: This article, the inaugural winner of the journal’s Gurli Aagaard Woods Undergraduate Publication Award, combines the analysis of ancient literature with an archaeological approach in an effort to further interpret the presence and significance of trees in medieval Scandinavian culture. The analysis of textual references to trees such as Yggdrasill and Barnstokkr found in the Norse works Völuspá, Grímnismál, Gylfaginning, and Völsunga Saga, are combined with academic articles, juxtaposed with the examination of archaeological sites at Fröso, Herresta, Bjarsgård, Österfärnebo, and Karmøy, and integrated with modern Scandinavian attitudes to explore an interest in tree-human relationships, literature, and archaeology in medieval Scandinavia. RÉSUMÉ : Cet article, premier lauréat du prix de la revue Gurli Aagaard Woods de publication pour étudiant de premier cycle, combine l’analyse d’une littérature ancienne avec une approche archéologique, dans un effort pour interpréter davantage la présence et l’importance des arbres dans la culture scandinave médiévale. The Goddess: Myths of the Great Mother Description The Goddess is all around us: Her face is reflected in the burgeoning new growth of every ensuing spring; her power is evident in the miracle of conception and childbirth and in the newborn’s cry as it searches for the nurturing breast; we glimpse her in the alluring beauty of youth, in the incredible power of sexual attraction, in the affection of family gatherings, and in the gentle caring of loved ones as they leave the mortal world. The Goddess is with us in the everyday miracles of life, growth, and death which always have surrounded us and always will, and this ubiquity speaks to the enduring presence and changing masks of the universal power people have always recognized in their lives. -

KOZÁK Charles University Abstract The article explores the idea of an echo, both literal and structural, that connects Old Norse cosmogony and eschatology. The motif of a bellowing sound or cry appears in cosmogony in the figure of Ymir, ‘Crier’, who is killed by the Æsir, and from his body the world is cre- ated. During the eschatological events the booming sound recurs when Heimdallr blows his horn shortly before the Æsir themselves are killed by their adversaries. A cry is also emitted by Óðinn when he sacrifices himself on the Cosmic Tree. The booming bellow is thus associated with death, especially in the context of implicit or explicit sacrifice. The structural resonance between cosmogony and eschatology is composed of a series of five motifs that reappear in the same sequence at both liminal moments. The eschatology seems to be structurally a repetition of the cosmogony, but with inverted roles: the victims are the gods, and the sacrificers are the giants, which is the inverse of the situation during the cosmogony. The present analysis sheds light on the sacrificial pattern hidden behind the two events, and helps contextualize the motif of the mighty sound that reappears at both moments in cosmic history. The Rök Runestone and the End of the World Per Holmberg (University of Gothenburg), Bo Gräslund (Uppsala University), Olof Sundqvist (Stockholm University), and Henrik Williams (Uppsala University) Abstract The Rök runestone from central middle Sweden, dated to around 800 CE, is famous, among other things, for a supposed reference to the emperor Theodo ric the Great. This study proposes instead that the inscription deals with an anxiety triggered by a son’s death and the fear of a new climate crisis similar to the catastrophic one after 536 CE. Combining perspectives and findings from semiotics, philology, archaeology, and history of religion, the study presents a completely new interpretation which follows a unified theme, showing how the monument can be understood in the sociocultural and religious context of early Viking Age Scandinavia. The inscription consists, according to the pro posed interpretation, of nine enigmatic questions. Five of the questions con cern the sun, and four of them, it is argued, ask about issues related to the god Odin. A central finding is that there are relevant parallels to the inscription in early Scandinavian poetry, especially in the Eddic poem Vafþrúðnismál. It was erected c. 800 CE in a prosperous agricultural district in today’s central middle Sweden by Varinn as a memorial to his son Vāmōðʀ. Except for one damaged line, its more than 700 runes and other characters are still clearly legible, and cover all five visible sides of a fiveton granite slab, over two and a half meters high above the ground. -
The Late Iron Age Worldview and the Concept of 'Utmark'
Gro Steinsland The late Iron Age Worldview and the Concept of ‘Utmark’ Our concern here is the ‘utmark’ or outfield, the outer areas of the farmstead, cultivated and explored by men. It is not the empirically experienced outfield that will be in focus, but rather the ideas and symbolism created around it. There are no obvious sources that give us immediate access to the ideology of the outfield as such. The question is whether it will be acceptable to consider the cosmological worldview of the Viking period as a doorway to the ideas of the outfield. The cosmology of the Viking period contains a mythological domain that may be characterised as a sort of ‘outfield’. Within the mythological texts, the outer sphere of cosmos is called Utgard, ‘the home/farm outside’, the areas outside the fence. The question is whether the ideas connected to that cosmological domain may be transferred to the concepts of outfield or ‘utmark’ surrounding the farmstead. In the study of the history of religion, it is commonly assumed that there are parallels between the cultural classifications on the cosmological and the empirical level. This presupposition is, however, a hypothesis that has to be further investigated. This broader task is not going to occupy us as such; it is a rather huge challenge that has to be handled in an interdisciplinary way. I will concentrate on the narrower question, whether it is possible to argue that there were some sort of parallels between the ideas of the outfield on the microcosmic level and Utgard on the macrocosmic level.
