  • O Imaginêrio De Antonio Carlos Jobim
O IMAGINÁRIO DE ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM: REPRESENTAÇÕES E DISCURSOS Patrícia Helena Fuentes Lima A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages (Portuguese). Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: Advisor: Monica Rector Reader: Teresa Chapa Reader: John Chasteen Reader: Fred Clark Reader: Richard Vernon © 2008 Patrícia Helena Fuentes Lima ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT PATRÍCIA HELENA FUENTES LIMA: Antonio Carlos Jobim: representações e discursos (Under the direction of Monica Rector) My aim with the present work is to describe the personal and creative trajectory of this artist that became known to his audience and people as a hero in the mythological sense—an individual that constructs a series of victories and defeats that continues until death, after which he is glorified by his community. Therefore, I approach the narratives that made him famous: the ones produced by the print press as well as those texts that negotiate meaning, memory, domain and identity created by his fans. I will place special emphasis on the fact that his public produced a definitive narrative about his figure, an account imbued with devotion, familiarity and creativity following his death. More specifically, I identify intertwined relations between the Brazilian audience and the media involved with creating the image of Antonio Carlos Jobim. My hypothesis is that Antonio Carlos Jobim’s image was exhaustively associated with the Brazilian musical movement Bossa Nova for ideological reasons. Specially, during a particular moment in Brazilian history—the Juscelino Kubitschek’s years (1955-1961).

  • Legitimacy in Criminal Governance
Legitimacy in Criminal Governance: Managing a Drug Empire from Behind Bars Benjamin Lessing1 Graham Denyer Willis2 Abstract: States, rebel groups, and mafias all provide governance beyond their core membership; increasingly, so do prison gangs. Leveraging street-level actors’ anticipation of future incarceration, U.S. prison gangs govern retail drug markets from behind bars. Brazil’s Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) gang goes further, orchestrating paralyzing attacks on state and civilian targets, while imposing social order in slums that vastly reduced homicides. We present and analyze a trove of seized PCC documents detailing its retail drug business and internal disciplinary system. Three descriptive findings stand out: a decentralized but profitable consignment-based trafficking operation; elaborate bureaucratic procedures and recordkeeping; and overwhelmingly nonviolent punishments for debt-nonpayment and misconduct. These features, we argue, reflect a deliberate strategy of creating legitimacy in criminal governance. The PCC’s fair rules, collectivist norms, procedural justice, and meticulous "criminal criminal records" facilitate community stigmatization of infractors, giving mild sanctions punitive heft and inducing widespread voluntary compliance without excessive coercion. 1 Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Chicago. blessing [at] uchicago.edu. Criminal governance can extend beyond organizations’ core members to illicit markets and the civilian communities where such markets operate.

  • Letter to Shareholders
October 16, 2019 Fellow shareholders, In Q3, we grew to $5.2 billion in revenue, up 31% over the prior year, and operating income doubled to $1.0 billion. Paid net adds totaled 6.8m compared to our 7.0m forecast and prior year Q3 of 6.1m. As we’ve improved the variety, diversity and quality of our content slate, member engagement has grown, revenue has increased, and we’re able to further fund our content investment. Q3 Results and Q4 Forecast In Q3’19, average streaming paid memberships and ARPU grew 22% and 9% year over year, respectively. Excluding a -$137m year over year impact from F/X, consolidated revenue growth was 35%, while streaming ARPU growth was 12%. Operating margin of 18.7% (up 670 bps year over year) was above our guidance due to timing of content and marketing spend, which will be more weighted to Q4’19. EPS amounted to $1.47 vs. $0.89 and included a $171 million non-cash unrealized gain from F/X remeasurement on our Euro denominated debt. Our Euro bonds provide us with a small natural hedge for our growing European revenues. Total paid net adds of 6.8m increased 12% year over year and was an all-time Q3 record. As a reminder, the quarterly guidance we provide is our actual internal forecast at the time we report and we strive for accuracy. In Q3, our guidance forecast was our most accurate in recent history. 1 In the US, paid net adds totaled 0.5m in Q3 vs.
