Ha curato (2010-2011) la mostra documentale su Jack La Bolina a San Benedetto del Tronto e a Fermo. Nel 2011 gli è stato attribuito, dalla sezione della L.N.I. di San Benedetto del Tronto, il riconoscimento di “Angelo delle Acque” per l’attività cul- turale svolta. Attualmente è impegnato nel recupero, nella valorizzazione e nella tutela del m/p Geneviève ultimo scafo della gloriosa marineria oceanica sambenedettese. GIUSEPPE MERLINI. Sambenedettese. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage Canto Iv
CHILDE HAROLD’S PILGRIMAGE CANTO IV Look at the end for Appendix 1: Hobhouse’s four stanzas “in the Childe’s style” and Appendix 2: Gibbon, Chapter 71. Background Byron arrived in Venice on November 10th 1816, and stayed while Hobhouse travelled with members his family to Naples. Unwillingly – for he was most attached to his Venetian mistress, Mariana Segati – Byron went south on April 17th 1817. He paid a short visit to Florence on April 22nd, and then proceeded to Rome, where, with Hobhouse, he stayed between April 29th and May 20th. 1 He returned to Venice on May 28th. He started Childe Harold IV on June 26th, and had finished the first draft by July 29th. He worked on the poem throughout the autumn, stopping only to rough-out Beppo , a poem so diametrically opposed to Childe Harold in matter and idiom that it might have come from another pen. Hobhouse left Venice on January 7th 1818, and Byron wrote to Murray My dear Mr Murray, You’re in damned hurry To set up this ultimate Canto, But (if they don’t rob us) You’ll see M r Hobhouse Will bring it safe in his portmanteau. 2 – The poem was published on April 28th 1818. Influence The fourth and last canto of Byron’s poem shows his holiday with Shelley (palpable for much of Canto III) to be over, and the baleful influence of Hobhouse to have returned. Claire Claremont wrote to her ex-lover on January 12th 1818, after the poem had been dispatched, with Hobhouse, to London. -

FOREWORD As I have repeatedly ventured to assert both in my Italy of the Italians and elsewhere, the Italy of to-day is too little known to the English, despite the fact that they cross her frontier in their thousands every year. They are intimately acquainted with the Italy of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fif- teenth centuries ; Dante, Botticelli, Michael Angelo, and many a lesser light are familiar as household words. After their day, how- ever, comes a long gap in the traveller's historical knowledge until the names of Mazzini, Garibaldi, and the other heroes of the loom on the horizon Risorgimente ; the intervening centuries are as though they had never existed ! Then comes another blank. Of the men who are shaping the destinies of the Italy of to-day, of the influ- ences which have made her what she is at vi ITALIAN LEADERS OF TO-DAY this great moment of her history, the majority know little or nothing. And yet this should not be, more especially since not only have Italy and England always been friends, bound together by ties of respect and affection, but they are now political allies ; and we trust that once this cruel war is over they may not only remain allies, but become closer friends than ever. -

ABSTRACT When Italy became a fully united country in 1870, Britain was an enthusiastic supporter of the new state. This feeling was reciprocated, with Italy regarding Britain as her most sincere friend in Europe. In February 1887 Britain joined Italy, Germany and Austria-Hungary in the Mediterranean Agreements, by which Britain guaranteed support for Italy in the event of attack upon her. However, by then circumstances had changed. The British occupation of Egypt and the Mahdist uprising had led to Britain becoming a significant Power in North-East Africa. During the same period, Italy had started establishing colonial settlements on the Red Sea. This led to a conflict in the region between Italian and British interests. In addition, Franco-Italian friction increased as Crispi, the Italian Premier since August 1887, continually provoked France, culminating in a crisis which nearly tipped Europe into a full-scale war in 1888. -
