After that, he became a collaborator and a protégé of cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who is one of the most significant figures of the century. Then he took refuge in Rome, where over the years he held varied appointments. Since his youth and in parallel with his political ca- reer, Cappello constantly devoted himself to humanistic studies and to rhymes production: pupil of Pietro Bembo, interlocutor of Giovanni Della Casa and close friend to Bernardo Tasso, the author is among the greatest exponents of the sixteenth-century Petrarchism. For the first time the critical edition of Rime by Bernardo Cappello is here given, namely the book of 353 composi- tions that the author elaborated on the pattern of Bembo’s directives, over a large period of time. In his book of poetry (canzoniere), through lyrical pieces, the author creates his own existential and biographical path. Regarding the evolution of the architecture of Cappello’s collection, four witnesses survived, in which we distinguish different phases: the first one is genetic and manu- script (Roma, Biblioteca Casanatense, 277), with addition of corrections that generally are close to the textual variants of the princeps; the second is the print of 1560 for the press of the Guerra brothers; finally, a further evolutionary stage is represented by two postillated prints. To these witnesses a rich miscel- laneous tradition is added, which, for a large number of rhymes, restores the elaborative complexity through multiple genetic forms. Poems ousted from the ancient print, but part of the canzoniere in other phases of composition, are included in this critical edition. Keywords Italian philology. Petrarchism. Sixteenth century. Camillo Camilli (ca. 1560-1615—his exact birth date is unknown) was an Italian poet of the sixteenth-century. His family came from Monte San Savino, Siena, and records mention that he died on July 13, 1615, in Ragusa. While personal documentation on Camilli’s life is scarce there are substantial sources about his literary career as a translator, compiler and poet. Camilli wrote extensively. There are the five canti on Erminia e Tancredi which were collated with Tarquo Tasso’s (1544-1595) unfinished poems, and his commentaries for Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso in 1584 and for Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata in 1585. Under the influence of Tasso’s writings and his involvement in the commentary of Gerusalemme Liberata (1585), Camilli started formulating his concetto (conceit) of what an impresa is (badge, device or insignia). The focus of this essay is on Camilli’s Imprese for the Academies. The whole collection of the Imprese consists of three volumes. The frontispiece to each volume depicts three different stage settings filled with classical ornamentation and bearing in the center of the lintel the impresa or insignia of Francesco Ziletti’s printing company—a starfish surrounded by stars and bound by a ribbon.

    CHILDE HAROLD’S PILGRIMAGE CANTO IV Look at the end for Appendix 1: Hobhouse’s four stanzas “in the Childe’s style” and Appendix 2: Gibbon, Chapter 71. Background Byron arrived in Venice on November 10th 1816, and stayed while Hobhouse travelled with members his family to Naples. Unwillingly – for he was most attached to his Venetian mistress, Mariana Segati – Byron went south on April 17th 1817. He paid a short visit to Florence on April 22nd, and then proceeded to Rome, where, with Hobhouse, he stayed between April 29th and May 20th. 1 He returned to Venice on May 28th. He started Childe Harold IV on June 26th, and had finished the first draft by July 29th. He worked on the poem throughout the autumn, stopping only to rough-out Beppo , a poem so diametrically opposed to Childe Harold in matter and idiom that it might have come from another pen. Hobhouse left Venice on January 7th 1818, and Byron wrote to Murray My dear Mr Murray, You’re in damned hurry To set up this ultimate Canto, But (if they don’t rob us) You’ll see M r Hobhouse Will bring it safe in his portmanteau. 2 – The poem was published on April 28th 1818. Influence The fourth and last canto of Byron’s poem shows his holiday with Shelley (palpable for much of Canto III) to be over, and the baleful influence of Hobhouse to have returned. Claire Claremont wrote to her ex-lover on January 12th 1818, after the poem had been dispatched, with Hobhouse, to London.

Baltimore, Maryland July 19th, 2017 © Christopher Geekie 2017 All rights reserved ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I analyze conceptions of epic poetry in sixteenth century Italy, specif- ically the debates surrounding vernacular poetic language, which ultimately produce the first successful Italian epic, Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata. While scholars have mainly focused on early interpretations of Aristotle’s Poetics and questions of narrative structure, I argue for a shift towards analyzing discourses of language and style, which provide a more concrete framework for understanding Tasso’s poetic innovation. Examin- ing linguistic and literary texts from the 1530s to 1560s, I focus on issues of establishing a stable vernacular poetic language capable of equalling classical forms, specifically that of epic, at a time when the epic genre is defined by an exacting set of aesthetic expec- tations seemingly at odds with a predominantly lyric tradition grounded in Petrarchan love poetry. I argue that an unstable critical moment emerges by the mid sixteenth cen- tury concerning the ability of poets to translate the ideal form of classical epic into the mellifluous Italian language. This tension leads to experimentation with various formal elements that concern sound, notably meter and rhyme. I conclude that Tasso addresses this issue of sound with a radical theory of epic style based on the unconventional aes- thetic qualities of harshness, dissonance, and sonority.

A Digital Exploration of 16th-Century Heretical Networks in the Italian Medical Context Methodological Challenges and Research Perspectives * Alessandra Celati ** After the Reformation began in 1517, Protestant ideas soon crossed theAlpsand spread out of Italian cities, fascinating (especially, but not exclusively) the human- ists and scholars who were part of the late-Renaissance intellectual environment. In particular, between the 1530s and the 1590s a great number of Italian physicians absorbed, promoted, and re-elaborated, often in radical terms, the reformed and heretical discourse. In this article I am presenting some research perspectives and methodological challenges concerning the application of social network research and digital humanities tools to the history of 16tʰ-century religious dissent. In par- ticular, I will discuss and examine the reconstruction, out of a sample of 200 cases, of a network of dissident physicians who faced religious repression and opposed dogmatic confessional boundaries in Italy, and in their European diaspora, as a part of my own ongoing interdisciplinary research.

La memoria è strutturata in diversi paragrafi (circa trenta) riportanti argomenti, temi o domande che si intendono sviluppare relative ai Bogos , una popolazione indigena del nord dell’Abissinia (queste parti di testo sono vergate a penna nera e in italiano) ciascuno dei quali è seguito da una risposta - di altra mano - che è stata compilata sull’argomento specifico (testo a penna blu, in francese). Alcuni passi a titolo esemplificativo. “ Come [è] punito il furto - i ferimenti - l’omicidio - l’adulterio -la calunnia - la falsa testimonianza - il rifiuto d’obbedienza al Capo tribù - Debitori e creditori: ‘Le vol n’a autre punition que la restitution de l’objét volé au de l’équivalent (…) l’homicide pour la lois du talion.
