SYNOPSIS Les Infidèles is een episodische sketch komedie in zeven korte films, die de triomfen en mislukkingen, de heerlijkheden en meelijwekkende rampen van de mannelijke ontrouw in al zijn wanhopige, absurde en wild grappige variëteit verkent. Van een conferentiehotel in de buitenwijken naar een seksverslavingskliniek, van een chique Parijse nachtclub tot de blitse gokpaleizen van Las Vegas, lanceren de hoofdpersonen zichzelf in de eeuwenoude achtervolging. Iedere keer wordt er excuus aangeboden, elke truc wordt uit de kast gehaald. De zoektocht naar vrouwelijk schoon is begonnen.

INTERVIEW WITH JEAN DUJARDIN AND GILLES LELLOUCHE

How was this project born? Jean: “This project is a combination of desires and ideas that I had for some time. First, the desire to make movie skits, with the variety in a format that allows cinema. The theme of infidelity came to me after I heard a story about a man who cheated on his wife. To deceive her, he went to the movies where he bought a ticket and then cut his phone before going to frolic. When he came home, his wife asked him why she couldn’t reach him on his mobile phone, and he showed her his filmticket as proof. I found this very interesting. The theme of infidelity provides an exciting playground. The title, LES INFIDÈLES, came to me when I saw the DVD cover of Martin Scorsese’s film LES INFILTRÉS, I misread it as LES INFIDELES ... At that moment I had the form, a theme and a title and the project was born”.

How did you work together? Gilles: “Jean and I have known eachother for a long time. In this business ,your desire to work together with someone on a project is somewhat hypothetical. But then, when Jean spoke to me for the first time about this project, I immediately was very excited to be able to do everything together on this project, and effectively share both our artistic vision and our strong friendship. “ Jean: “We get along very well. Gilles and I are both from the same generation. we have the same taste, the same sensitivity and a mutual respect for both our work. Our collaboration seemed obvious.”

How did you choose the different stories fort his film? Jean: “The great thing about sketches is that you can offer a real variety. we could approach the topic of infidelity from different point of views. Some more close to our own reality than others. We tried to sweep the issue in proposing approaches that also speak up to different ages and social classes. We started out with meetings with our co-authors, Stéphane Joly, Philippe and Nicolas Caverivière Bedos. We thought of several potentional short films - at least thirty at the base - then we chose a few wich we would actually use. The only thing in common was the outspokenness and humor.”

Since the film contains several stories with different characters, the writing must have been difficult in terms of continuity? Gilles: “Each film meets another one. Each segment ends just where the other begins.” Jean: “We originally thought separating each film by giving it a title, but we realized that this would be difficult. Starting from a first sketch that begins early in the film and finishes at the end of the film, it installs the core issue through these two guys. We wanted a light tone to get people in the theme alongside two guys who go into the bush, with very direct reflections.” Jean: “We tried to forget the fear of being too serious. We wanted to be free in format and in tone of voice, The desire was to play with the structure by getting rid of excisting laws which are supposed to regulate form and style.” Gilles: “It's a different scenario, inventive and lively.”

What was at stake in this film for you? Jean: “First is the desire of the actor who wants to play different things. I had the desire to do something different. The goal is never to be gratuitously shocking, but to be free and to go after things, to propose funny situations funny that are little subversive. This is what we wanted.” Gilles: “We also had a yearning for a freedom of acting like the one found in Blier's films or in Italian comedies such as MONSTERS - the moviesketches by Dino Risi starring Vittorio Gassman and Ugo Tognazzi.”

Was it your goal to provoke any discussions by making a film on the subject of infidelity? Gilles: “The goal was to exploit the situation, not to debate it.” Jean: “We used this theme to embody serval characters: the man with no spine, the coward, the cunning one. The ultimate dream!”

Did you experience any struggles while making the film? Jean: “We are often told that we are "bankable", then all it serves to set up projects. If we were not what we are in the business, things would have probably been much more complicated.” Gilles: “For us, this project was a great breath of fresh air. When you know exactly what you will be shooting, the more you are bound to certain requiries, so you are less free in what you are creating. We wouldn’t repeat anything that was already done. “

When did you decide to use several directors, and how did you choose them? Jean: “From the beginning of the project, we decided not to direct all stories ourselves because the it would have been too heavy. we both chose directors that we like fort heir affinity and for what they could bring to stories. For example Michel Hazanavicius, I knew the way he directs and his participation would bring something funny and meaningful at the same time. for the "Prologue", we needed someone who is quick, efficient, very visual, who could write with great energy. Fred Cavaye was the man for the job.” Gilles: “Emmanuelle Bercot is very intelligent and sensitive. It was evident for us that the skit "The question" was meant for her. In the case of Eric Lartey, all his work is made with a social spirit and a direct approach. So we chose him for "Lolita". I have known Alex Courtes for a long time and although he is not very well known in the filmindustry, his videoclips are internationally renowned. His strong visual mind made him very suitable for "Infidels anonymous." By combining these talents in all their variety, we wanted to offer different colors in the film.”

Jean, In one story you play next to your wife, Alexandra. How was it for you to act together in a story with this subject? Alexandra and I know exactly where things stop. We don’t mix up our private life with our work. When we act, it’s fiction.

How was the shooting period? Gilles: “We were shooting the films one after the other. Even though it was the domain of non-words, each director worried about what the others had done. This pressure finally served the project, which was a distillation of pure energy with a desire to make the best film possible.” John: “Having seven different directors was already rather special. Also for the team itself. But this is one aspect that made the project interesting. Each Monday, we started with a new director, in a new place, with different actors. It was not boring for one moment!”

What means the film to you today? Jean: “Les Infidèles reminds me how much I loved to start a new project, tob ring people together. I like the band that it creates. This film will probably remain one of the highlights of my career, the freedom to make a fun film toghether with some friends who are all very talented. I would love to do it again! This film allows me to offer something else to the public after "The Artist". I do not want to get stuck in certain types of roles. I want to keep surprising the audience.” Gilles: “For me, Les Infidèles proves that everything is possible. To be able to make a feature film together with Jean, and with such great energy was great. The film also confirmes my desire to create. It was a powerful experience. We were fortunate that people are following us allow us to continue our work. Thanks to the energy and involvement of everyone involved, the final result is beyond both our expectations.
