FR. PAUL K. BALLIEN, SUPREME CHAPLAIN

It is often said that we live in a consumeristic society, and so because of this, the advertisements that we see on TV and hear on the radio can often times seem sort of shallow. For example, a commercial for dandruff shampoo will show a guy with low self-esteem because he’s got dandruff. I mean how can anyone like themselves if they’ve got dandruff, right? But then he finds the right shampoo, gets rid of the dandruff, and all of a sudden he is successful at work, he gets the girl of his dreams, and life is wonderful and happy. If only life were so simple.

This is why it is so important for us to remember what really makes us happy, what really satisfies us. It is important for us to remember what it is that we are really thirsting for. When it comes down to it, do we not all long for love, life and truth? It is Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and life. He is the one who satisfies our thirst. St. Augustine was once quoted as saying, “My heart will not rest until it rests in you my God.” It is necessary therefore that we come to that realization lest we go after things that end up leaving us empty on the inside.

Working for the intellectually disabled helps us to come to this realization, it helps us to realize what is truly important in life, it helps to put things in proper perspective. This is because when we imitate Christ’s love by showing care and concern for all human beings, especially for the most vulnerable, we end up connecting ourselves much more closely to Him because we have adopted his attitude of love and compassion. This is what fulfills us, not the empty promises that the world offers.

If you stop and think about it, you have to realize that everything here on earth is transitory and passes away. Nothing here is permanent, which is why nothing can permanently or totally quench our thirst except God alone - who is eternal. Its only our relationship with God, or lack thereof, that remains forever. Other things are only there for a second and then they are gone. Therefore, if we really want to find our happiness and fulfillment that will last, that kind of satisfaction can only be found in God.

Laus Deo. J. R. BLACK, SUPREME COMMANDER

I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer and ready to get in the “Fall and Winter mode” I want to thank all those members who attended the convention in Baltimore and selected me to be the new SC for the next two years. As I stated in my remarks at the Convention, my main focus will be “MEMBERSHIP” which is the life blood of our or any organization to survive. I would like your support to recruit as many new members as possible between now and the next convention, it won’t be easy but we can do it if we put 100% effort into it, but we need everyone to do their part.

My Sultana Barbara and I really look forward to serving you and the Order for the next two years and I look forward to your comments and suggestions. You can reach me anytime.

For information and planning purposes the next convention will be in San Antonio, TX, July 2021. More information will be put out at a later-date. So, mark your calendar and plan on being there. We are in the planning stages of a great convention.

Make sure you submit your newsletters articles to the Alhambran so everyone can see what you are doing in your region for the next few months. We have a very busy schedule ahead, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, but it’s a good time to visit with family and friends. While visiting ask if they would be interested in our “Great Order”, it never hurts to ask.

Talking about “Membership” let me remind you that the annual Christmas raffles will be coming out soon and the annual Raffle will be sent out early next year, I encourage all members to purchase at least one book, this along with Membership helps keep the per capita down. Raffle Funds won’t last forever, Membership is the key.

I plan on having a “Membership Contest” more information will follow. So stayed tuned.

We are trying our best to keep the cost of running the Order down and use the money wisely.

In closing my Sultana and I hope you had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend, looking forwarded to be out on Halloween with Kids, Grandkids, great Grandkids. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. This is always a great time for family and friends.

Warm regards, God Bless you all, and God Bless this Great Country of Ours and the Order of Alhambra. JOE B. CORTINAZ, VICE SUPREME COMMANDER

Members All, I want to thank every member of the Order for your support in getting me elected as your Vice Supreme Commander. It is truly an honor to serve in this position. And I want to thank all the past Supreme Commanders, COV members and caravan members who attended the 58th Biennial Convention in Baltimore MD. Without your support this convention would not have been a success. I was very happy to see the camaraderie among the Alhambra members. Special thanks to the Convention Committee for all their hard work and a very special thanks goes out to Executive Secretary Denise Blakely for all the countless hours that she devoted to making sure the convention went as planned: all the miles she drove and all the meetings she conducted with hotel personnel so that everything would be in place when all arrived at the hotel. Thank you, Denise.

Our next convention will be in San Antonio, Texas in 2021. Start making plans to attend the 59th Biennial Convention. San Antonio is a great place to visit and there are lots of places to see: The Alamo, River walk, Six Flags, Historic Pearl Brewery, Buck Horn Saloon, Tower of the Americas, Golf, Shops at the Cantera, Preserved Spanish Missions dating back to the 1700’s, Restaurants, and many more things to do. Start planning now, Rooms will be limited. If you don’t come, you will be missing out on a great time. More information will be forth coming.

As Vice Supreme commander one of my responsibilities is membership. The message is clear; we need more members. We have fallen to an all time low of 1863 members. It is the responsibility of every member to recruit. At our last meeting at the convention, I gave an assignment to each Supreme Director. I asked each Region: II, III, IV, V, and VIII to bring in 20 new members by July 2020. Region VI was asked to bring in 30 by 2020, and Region VII was asked to bring in 40 new members by July 2020. This is not a hard assignment. Supreme Directors, you must follow up monthly with your Grand Commanders and make sure they are pushing recruitment in their caravans. At the COV meeting of July 2020, I will expect your report on membership. As our Supreme Commander stated: “we are all volunteers, so let’s do the job we volunteered to do”. Supreme Director, let’s give one hundred per cent to this effort. We are only 137 members away from 2000 members. If every Supreme Director can meet their goal, we will be in good shape in July 2020. Keep in mind the more members we have the more we can do for God’s Special Children. The next member is just around the corner. Remember all you need to do is Ask. The future of the Order is in your hands. Rest assured I will be out in the field recruiting members as well. My caravan (Alamo # 269) will be working just as hard as yours.

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” God bless all, God bless Alhambra. GILLES BENARD, SUPREME CHAMBERLAIN

DOLLARS AND CENTS We have now completed our fiscal year ending June 30th and can make a review of the financial results for the full year.

The General fund had a positive year as the loss of members was more than offset by the profit made with the sale of regular raffle tickets and also the sale of the Christmas raffle tickets. Another positive contribution was the decrease of the office expenses which helped bring the final results into a comfortable situation.

The Charity fund had an exceptional year as the income on our investments was well above the expectations. The appreciation of our investments combined with the revenues from interests and dividends gave us an excellent rate of return of 5.5%, This can be explained by the Federal Reserve being dovish with interest rates which helped to push financial markets at high levels.

For those interested to see the complete reports please call Denise or send her an email. She will promptly send you the reports.

The sale of the Raffle tickets was again this year a great success mainly due to our Supreme Vice Commander Joe B. Cortinaz selling 1,380 tickets or 22.67% of all tickets sold. The profit for the year was $17,798 which is better than last year by $510.

Congratulations to our winners and a BIG THANK YOU for all those buying tickets. PER CAPITA REDUCED TO $46. FOR 2019-20 – SCH REPORT CONT’D. The members of the Council of Viziers held their annual meeting in Baltimore to coincide with the Convention. The members have considered many options before coming to the conclusion that it would be best to reduced the Per Capita by $1. This decision was based on the results from last year and an anticipation of positive results for the coming year. The schedule of payment was approved as follows: $46 if paid by Sept. 30th $55 if paid by Nov. 30th

$50 if paid by Oct. 31st $60 if paid by Dec. 31st

REVISION TO THE SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM An important change has taken place for the Summer Camp Program effective August 6th 2019. In the past each Region had a maximum amount of $1,000 regardless the number of campers per fiscal year. However, if a Region was not making requests or was under the maximum allowed the portion not used was lost for that year. With the revision, each Region will still have a maximum amount of $1,000 regardless the number of campers but will be on a fiscal year from July 1st to June 1st. (These dates will be used as the fiscal year for the Summer Camp only). After that date any Region that have not reached the maximum amount available will lose their allocation which will become available on a first come first save basis up to a maximum of $1,000. Supreme Directors may contact the Secretariat starting June 1st until June 20th to see if there are remaining funds available. If funds are available, SD’s must submit applications no later than June 25th to the Secretariat for consideration. The Summer Camp Committee will have the final approval of distributing these funds.

MAKE ALHAMBRA GREAT AGAIN Attending a Convention is certainly an opportunity to meet members that you wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to meet. This year was no different and it gave me the chance to meet PSS Ryan Mullen. He came in at the Hospitality suite with a very special fez (see picture) that he had arranged to read MAKE ALHAMBRA GREAT AGAIN. This was certainly great thinking from Ryan. The message is very simple; let’s work together to bring many more members and the Alhambra will be GREAT AGAIN. Our Supreme Director from Region V James V. Sterley was present and he immediately wore the fez (see picture) as a way to support Ryan in making this organization look like the good old days. In the past few years we have overcome the loss of members by selling raffle tickets. This is certainly very positive but it does not solve the real problem. We need the support of not only a handful of members but each of you. If everybody brings one or more than one new member it would have such an impact that could say that ALHAMBRA IS GREAT AGAIN.

Dear Rev. Fathers, Sir Nobles, Lady Nobles, and Friends. What a convention we had in Maryland one of the best I have attended. Save some extra money for San Antonio, TX, in two years. If anyone wants goals to increase membership message me at Order of Alhambra, Alhamar Caravan # 4 on Facebook. Also, like the page and post, it would be appreciated.

Thanks to all that helped make the 2019 convention in Baltimore, MD a great success, especially the convention committee (PSC Mike Stakem, SC JR Black and ES Denise Blakely) for a job well done! Also kudos to PSD Cliff Dake and SN Russ Smith (from the great State of LOL) as the MC’s for the Monday night activities and the members of Wamba Caravan that ran a great hospitality room. A good time was had by all. The 2021 convention will return to the beautiful city of San Antonio, TX so mark your calendars.

To outgoing Supreme Advocate Ed Fiorella thank you for your service to the Order, a true gentleman and friend who has served in many caravan and national positions over the years. Ed’s presence has been a calming force and a great help to me.

Welcome new Supreme Divan members Supreme Advocate Don Sauviac from St. Patrick Caravan #275 (North Dakota) and Supreme Scribe Ken Boone from Alamo Caravan #269 (Texas).

Region V has been challenged by VSC Joe B. Cortinaz to increase our membership by 20 new members by the next COV meeting (July/2020). This goal can be achieved if we all work together to increase membership. Region V had 169 members as of Feb/2019.

The Council of Caravans will hold its annual Italian Festival Dinner on Wednesday September 18, 2019 at the LaVera Party center in Willoughby Hills, Ohio tickets are $40 each. Proceeds go to help fund their annual Field Day.

SANTIAGO CARAVAN #169, CHICAGO, -REGION V A local businessman and resident of Oak Brook, IL and charitable dynamo Richard Montalbano Sr. received the prestigious Joseph P. Cianci Humanitarian Award at UNICO National’s annual convention, held in Nashville on July 27th, 2019.

Born and raised in the Galewood area of Chicago, IL and then River Forest, IL and a 1964 graduate of Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL and a 1968 graduate of St. Procopius College, present day, Benedictine University in Lisle, IL.

Richard Montalbano, Sr. continued as the second-generation owner of his family furniture manufacturing, importing, and restoration business for over 50 years through many ups and downs! As a pioneer in the importation of furniture and accessories from Italy, he continued along with his sons, Rick and Mark, the manufacturing of high end solid carved wood furniture as well as hotel and contract furniture. Richard continued to diversify into furniture distribution and delivery as well as restoring and reupholstering furniture for the residential market, which has become the primary business after ceasing manufacturing in 2010. Montalbano Furniture, previously Majestic Wood Carving Company was created by his father Thomas Montalbano, Sr. in 1923.

A Knight Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Montalbano as well has been active for 54 years serving as Past Grand Knight and Past District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus and as Past Regional Director and Grand Commander of the Order of Alhambra.

He has served for nearly 40 years as the curator of the Crypt of the Saints, a shrine at Visitation Parish in Elmhurst that contains roughly 700 religious’ statues, icons and relics of saints and a library of more than 700 books. His lifelong devotion to the saints as protectors and intercessors also led him to author a book on the topic that lists thousands of saints and their patronages.

A past president of the Chicago West Suburban Chapter of UNICO National, Montalbano is a founding member and trustee of the Westlake Health Foundation and an advisory board member of Touch My Heart.

He is a longtime member of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce, Boys & Girls Club of West Cook County and Chicagoland Italian American Charitable Organization, and a lifetime member of the Italian Cultural Center, National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, Hundred Club of DuPage County and Hi Hopes of Hope University.

In 2005, he and his family raised the more than $15,000 necessary to dig water wells for the Catholic Mission of Turkana in Kenya.

Montalbano has received the Silver Palm of Jerusalem Medal from the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, Lifetime Community Service Award from the Boys and Girls Club of West Cook County, Silver Acorn Award from the Boy Scouts of America, Taking the Initiative Award from ASPIRE of Illinois, Community Leadership Award from Ray Graham Association, Man of the Year award from the Boys and Girls Club of Bellwood and Hillside, Board Director of the Year award from the Boys and Girls Club of America, Outstanding Business Man award from the Bellwood Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Year, and International Man of the Year award from the International Biographical Center. He was inducted into the “Society of Procopians” at Illinois Benedictine College as well as the Catholic Youth Organization Club of Champions after raising over $250,000.00 for their programs

He and his family continue operating Montalbano Inc., a furniture showroom selling the last of all their locally made French provincial and solid carved wood furniture as well as restored antiques. They also continue restoring, refinishing, and reupholstering people’s quality furniture so it can continue to be passed down to the next generation! Their current location is in Broadview, IL and operates with craftspeople who have been with the business for almost 50 years and a combined experience of over 300 years!

PatriciaPatricia (Pat) (Pat) Plotkowski, Plotkowski, Supreme Supreme Director, RegionDirector, VI Region VI

I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement to run for the Supreme Director for Region VI. There are too many to name, but you know who you are. I am exciting about the new challenges and fun that awaits us as a region.

After the convention in Baltimore, Region VI added to two new caravans: St. Louis Guanella Caravan #274 in Michigan City, MI and St. Patrick Caravan #275 in Bismarck ND. Welcome to the Sir Nobles and Lady Nobles of these caravans into our region and the Order!

Region VI was represented by members from Manresa, , Sancho, Denia, St. Louis Gualella, and St. Patrick. All of the attendees had a great time renewing old friendship and making new ones. Thanks to Denise Blakely and the Supreme Officers for making this a great event!

With September just around the corner, the caravans are busy planning and prepping for the fall activities like Back to Picnics at local schools, Sunday cruise on the Clinton River, Family Fun Days, and much more. I will provide updates in upcoming Alhambrans.

GALICIA CARAVAN 77

In late June 2019, Galicia 77 Caravan co-sponsored its annual fishing derby at Brandenburg Park on Anchor Bay in New Baltimore/Chesterfield Twp. Great Job to PGC Louie Calioa and his fishing crew members from Galicia #77, local Knights of Columbus councils, Optimist Club, and Kiwanis clubs from St. Clair Shores. Weather was perfect for fishing. Not many fish were caught, but it was still a great time by all! Many next year, the clients will have better luck!

This year, Galicia #77 caravan held its 29th Annual Golfing Outing at Devil Ridge. This year, we honored our deputy regional director, Sancho’s GC Leo Osinski. Over 95 people attended this fun filled day on the links. As result of the generous donations of our corporate sponsors, friends and golfers, we were able to donate $10 000 to Cass Community Social Services.

Many asked the reason why Cass Community Social Services was chosen as this year’s recipient of $10,000 from the Alhambra/Galicia Caravan Charity Golf Outing. Galicia Caravan’s Charter Class was initiated into the International Order of Alhambra in Buffalo, in 1949. Thus, founded in , Galicia Caravan No. 77 has a long history of charitable work in this city accomplishing the Alhambra Mission of helping children with special needs. We have been appreciative of the dedicated missionary work of Reverend Faith Fowler, because like St. Theresa of Calcutta, Reverend Faith cares and services the poorest of the poor in the inner city. God bless to Reverend Faith Fowler, the members of Galicia Caravan, and all Golfers and Sponsors of the 2019 Charity Golf Outing for helping Children with Special Needs. Special kudos to our chairs, PGC Jerry Susulla and PGC Bill Marchiori.

Order of the Alhambra, Bejar Caravan #56 Joins Forces & Honors Dignitaries

SAN ANTONIO – This year Bejar Caravan #56 joined forces with its Sultanas and honored newly inducted Grand Commander Juan Solis. The Sultana’s Annual Fiesta de San Jacinto Ball commemorates the battle of San Jacinto that won Texas’ Independence from Mexico. The event includes a visit from King Antonio, the anointed King of San Antonio during Fiesta. Grand Commander Juan Solis honored past grand commanders with Our Lady of Guadalupe relics. At the Sultanas’ annual Fiesta event, King Antonio XCVII Roger C. Hill III made the annual royal appearance where he traded royal regalia with our own grand commander. The following month San Antonio celebrated its annual commemoration of San Antonio de Padua at the San Fernando Cathedral. The local Archdiocese celebrated the birth of our great city’s inspiration and patron saint. Bejar Caravan #56 served as the honor guard escorting Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller into the cathedral for mass services. Upon completion of the mass, our caravan escorted the archbishop from the steps of the cathedral to San Antonio’s famous River Walk. PGC Rene Valero and SN John Alvarado accompanied the archbishop on a barge that paraded down the river where students and families from area Catholic schools lined the banks to honor the commemoration and receive blessings.
