Hello and happy Sunday! I pray and hope that everyone has been having a great summer; especially our students at St. Mary School. It is that time of year again when all of the students are preparing to return to school. Our first day of school at St. Mary is Monday, August 30th. I have been looking forward to the first day of school since I began on July 1st. I hope that our students are as excited as I am! Over the past few weeks, I have been asking some of our students if they were ready for school to begin. Many of them are very excited to start a new school year, while a few of them are a little more reluctant for school to start. I think my excitement for school to begin is because I get to meet all of our students but I will not be returning to homework. I think I have had enough years of homework. As many in our parish community begin a new school year, I would like to ask that we as a parish community please pray for our students, teachers, and parents. As we have all come to know over the last few years, the pandemic and Covid have not been easy on any of us. I think it has been particularly difficult for our teachers, parents and students who have had to adapt to the ever changing learning environment. With any time of change in our lives, God has been with us through it all and will continue to be with us. As I look back over the last two years, I am amazed at the countless blessings that God has worked throughout this time. It can be easy for us to focus on the struggle and miss the grace and blessings. Please pray for a good year for our students, parents, and teachers. Please pray for all of us at St. Mary and here at St. Peter, that we may remain open to the blessings that God has in store for us and that we might be aware of them and receive them with open hearts. As Blessed Solanus Casey reminds us, let us thank God ahead of time for the blessing of a good year and the many graces he has prepared for us to come. May we all cultivate this practice of thanking God ahead of time for the many future blessings He prepares for us. On a pastoral note, last week the Archdiocese of Detroit encouraged us to continue to be mindful of social distancing and encouraged us to wear masks indoors. This is not a requirement, but it can be helpful for us to remember that it is a great act of love for one another. May we remain charitable towards one another as we continue to journey in faith. We would also like to thank all of you who immediately responded to our request for plastic supermarket bags. Dropping your bags off at the pantry also gave us an opportunity to thank you personally. The pantry operation has been blessed with the addition of at least 10 teens who have rotated through the garage during the summer, providing strong, quick legs to unload the Forgotten Harvest trucks and ferry food from the distribution center (garage) to the waiting neighbors’ cars. They are good kids and we are proud of them. Based on the number of vegetables delivered to us from the parish garden, our gardeners are having a bumper crop this year. If there is a contest for the largest zucchinis, our gardeners should win the prize. We distribute zucchinis that are the size of piano legs! And finally, we must thank you, Forgotten Harvest, the Macomb Food program and our local community partners who worked with us to provide assistance during the COVID period of March 2020 to July 2021 to over 15,800 individuals. Couldn’t have done it without you! You are a blessing and live out your faith with kindness and care. Thank you and God bless.
