Hello and happy Sunday! Over the past month, a few of my bulletin articles have been focusing on the importance of prayer. As I have mentioned, many people are intimidated by prayer. Remember, that at the heart of prayer is the conversation between us and God. Like with our relationships, communication can take many forms. One of the basic forms of prayer is prayers of thanksgiving or praise. In this form of prayer, we offer to God a prayer of thanksgiving for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us. This can be as simple as: “Thank you Lord for the sunshine today.” “Thank you Jesus for your love and mercy.” As Bl. Solanus Casey reminds us, we can and should thank God for the blessings ahead of time as well: “Thank you Lord for the new job when you choose to send it.” Thanking God for our blessings ahead of time is a great way to help us to remain humble and to remember that all of our blessings come from Him. Another form of prayer is intercessory prayer, where we offer a prayer on behalf of another. This is the type of prayer we pray when others ask us for prayer or when someone we know is having a hard time or needs our prayer. We can also offer prayers of petition. This is when we pray for peace among nations, for those affected by natural disasters, like the earthquake victims in Haiti. It is important to remember that our Heavenly Father wants to hear from us and wants us to share with Him the longings of our heart; to share with Him what occupies our thoughts and to share our concerns for ourselves and that of others. I know for many, we find a God silent in prayer. We must always remember that God hears our prayers, though He doesn’t always answer them in the way we want. When God seems distant, we long for the closeness. This longing is a good thing. If our parents gave us everything we wanted when we wanted it then we would become spoiled and would lose our appreciation and would not work at things. This is true with God. He answers our prayers according to His will not ours. Our conversation and dependence on God is what will sustain us in life and along our spiritual journey. I encourage us once again to pray daily, to pray for our Parish Community, and to pray for our country. Remember that the most effective prayer is the one we pray.

Chrisan Stewardship: A Way of Life

Putting the Eucharist into Action: A Disciple’s Response In today’s Gospel, we hear that a number of Jesus’ followers left him because his message was too difficult for them to accept. In essence, they did not believe in him. He then asked the Twelve if they wished to leave as well. Peter responds by making a profound profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Twelve made a choice and stood by their choice, remaining loyal to their commitment to Jesus.

Questions we might ask of ourselves may be: Are we satisfied with the volunteer stewardship we exercise over our baptismal commitment? Are we just ‘along for the ride’? Are we keeping Christ in front of us as we make decisions about our daily activities, our relationships, our parish, issues in the workplace? What is the quality of our volunteer stewardship?

Another year of learning begins soon. Teachers everywhere will assemble students, engaging and encouraging them to discover their talents, recognize and focus on their potential, and understand more about life, faith, and the world. Likewise, “Missionary Discipleship and Stewardship” calls each of us to commit ourselves to learning more about our faith.

What are some ways we could tend to our faith? Here are a few ideas: Join, or lead, a parish Bible study group Join or start a book club reading religious books about saints, liturgy and Catholic practices Subscribe to or download an app for a daily devotional with reflection and commentary Participate in a faith-formation course Check the seminary for courses available to the laity Read religious pamphlets or a Catholic newspaper or magazine Look for Catholic educational resources online or on DVD Search for and read online the documents and summaries from the Second Vatican Council Prayer every day, often! We are summoned to fulfill a role only we can play using the gift of faith entrusted to us. What is God pressing on your heart to do with your faith? How will you respond? At the end of September, St. Peter Parish will be offering opportunities for all of us to commit and/or recommit our gifts and talents within the volunteer stewardship program.

Let us spend the last few weeks of summer, pondering on where Jesus is calling us to or what He is calling us to do with our gifts/talents. We are an Eucharistic People. Let us put the Eucharist into Action! God bless, Deb Goff-Liegghio Stewardship and Christian Service Ministries Page 8 St. Peter Parish, Mount Clemens
