58 BLAKE MORRISON IN THE CONTEMPORARY THEATRICAL SCENE Valter Henrique de Castro Fritsch Universidade Federal do Rio Grande ABSTRACT: This article discusses issues related to the various aesthetics that compose contemporary British dramaturgy. I point to features that divide the way theatre is viewed today in at least two aesthetic strands - one allied with more traditional patterns of writing for the theatre that derives from the Aristotelian model, and another that aims to cause a break with dramatic action, characters and all that constitutes the most classic view of dramatic text. This article also aims to place the poet and playwright Blake Morrison in the panorama of contemporary British theatre and show how the author fits into the many varying aspects of contemporary dramaturgy. KEYWORDS: Contemporary British Theatre; Blake Morrison; Imagery Studies; Contemporary Dramaturgy RESUMO: O presente artigo discute questões relacionadas às diferentes estéticas que compõe a dramaturgia contemporânea britânica. Aponto características que dividem a forma como o teatro é encarado hoje em pelo menos duas vertentes estéticas – uma aliada a padrões mais tradicionais da escrita para o teatro que deriva do modelo Aristotélico e outra que visa causar uma ruptura com a ação dramática, personagens e tudo que constitui a visão mais clássica de texto dramático. A sheepdog barks six fields away; I see the farm from here. Twelve-month cards, each one thumbed, flipped, weathered in its way – this the eighth, harvest-time, a full moon like a trump, a magic trick. It rose last night above this house, affirmative. I sensed your answer – hearts. Or a single hour is a smiling Jack, a diamond, or a spade learning a grave; charms or dark lessons. Something is shuffling; the soft breath of Moniack Mhor on the edge of utterance, I know it, the verbs of swifts riffling the air and the road turning itself into the loch, a huge ace into which everything folds. Here is the evening, displayed then dropped to drift to the blazon of barley, bracken, heather. Something is gifting this great gold gathering of cloud; a continual farewell. Sústredíme sa predovšetkým na myšlienku, že v sú časnosti už neexistuje uzavretý výklad života a celková koncepcia univerzálneho. V druhej časti je objasnený vplyv postmodernizmu na literatúru. Medzi hlavné zmeny patrí napríklad poh ľad na realitu a úloha rozpráva ča, pri čom nesmieme zabudnú ť na iróniu, ktorá predstavuje k ľúčový prvok v rámci postmoderného textu. V tretej podkapitole charakterizujeme pojem irónia a jeho rôzne formy, pri čom zis ťujeme, že v sú časnom postmodernom období je použitie irónie mnohonásobné, či už v rámci textu, alebo re či. Druhá, praktická čas ť sa zaoberá analýzou novely „ Master Georgie “ z poh ľadu irónie. -

Certainly, an unprecedented proportion of voters participated in general elections and belonged to the three main political parties at this time. These parties were moreover often rooted in local popular cultures. The Young Conservatives, for example, had in excess of 150,000 members, many of whom enjoyed a vibrant collective social life that encompassed sports of various kinds and even holidays to Spain.1 In spite of this most Britons’ relationship with Westminster politics was hardly intimate, certainly not before 1939 nor during the 1950s, and as the latter decade gave way to the 1960s and 1970s it became increasingly distant.2 Hitherto Labour and the Conservatives had found class a useful means of mobilizing support and while they continued to employ class-based appeals, the rising salience of other forms of identity meant they became less effective.3 The established working- and middle-class communities in which the parties had found a niche were being transformed and replaced by the self-conscious individualism of a new kind of suburbia.
