Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom. -

Th e funeral, the culmination of a week of mourning, took place at St Mary ’ s of the Angle on Morehouse Road. Th e congregation and many more, who could not fi t into the packed church, processed through Notting Hill to the West London Crematorium. Th e size and diversity of the crowd was a testament to the breadth of respect that Crichlow commanded. Th e mourners included the biggest names from Britain ’ s Black Power Movement including Howe, Althea Jones-Lecointe and her husband Eddie who had fl own in from Trinidad for the occasion, as well as Rhodan Gordon. Th ere were also more mainstream black activists and politicians such as Lee Jasper and Paul Boateng; the fi lm maker Horace Ové and hundreds of ordinary people, not political in any obvious sense, whose lives Crichlow had touched. Boateng gave the eulogy, recalling Crichlow ’ s activism, his smile, and his ‘ grace under pressure, and boy was there pressure ’ (Boateng 2010). -

A sheepdog barks six fields away; I see the farm from here. Twelve-month cards, each one thumbed, flipped, weathered in its way – this the eighth, harvest-time, a full moon like a trump, a magic trick. It rose last night above this house, affirmative. I sensed your answer – hearts. Or a single hour is a smiling Jack, a diamond, or a spade learning a grave; charms or dark lessons. Something is shuffling; the soft breath of Moniack Mhor on the edge of utterance, I know it, the verbs of swifts riffling the air and the road turning itself into the loch, a huge ace into which everything folds. Here is the evening, displayed then dropped to drift to the blazon of barley, bracken, heather. Something is gifting this great gold gathering of cloud; a continual farewell. Our cosy converted croft is an inspiring atmosphere for doing what we love best, writing. 2015 was a thrilling and creative year in the life of the newly fledged, independent Moniack Mhor. We’ve been visited by many writers from all walks of life, each sharing a different story, breathing energy into the walls of the building. -

Ian Brown, editor, The Edinburgh Companion to Scottish Drama (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2011); Trish Reid, Theatre & Scotland (Houndmills: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) Alan Riach What might be described as the conventional wisdom about Scottish drama is summed up in the first two sentences of chapter 10 of Marshall Walker’s book, Scottish Literature since 1707 (1996): ‘There is no paucity of Scottish theatrical heritage, but there is a shortage of durable Scottish plays. Drama is the genre in which Scottish writers have shown least distinction.’ It is a judgement that has been perpetuated over generations but only relatively recently has the necessary scholarship and engagement been advanced, by both academics and theatre practitioners, to interrogate the assumptions that lie behind it. Walker refers to ‘the circumstances of theatrical history’ and questions of suppression and censorship, the Reformation, the removal of the court to London in 1603, the Licensing Act of 1737, and concludes his introduction to the chapter by saying that despite familiar references to Allan Ramsay, John Home, Joanna Baillie, and the vitality of folk, music-hall and variety theatre, nothing much happens between Sir David Lyndsay in the sixteenth century and the ‘return’ of Scottish drama in the twentieth century. Most of his chapter then goes on to discuss incisively and refreshingly the achievements of J.M. Barrie, James Bridie and John McGrath but the context he sketches out is barren. As a summary, there is some brutal truth in this, but as an appraisal of the whole complex story, there is much more to be said, and much more has been discovered and made public in the decades since Walker’s book appeared. -
