A thesis supervised by Dr. Isobel Grundy and submitted at Queen Mary and Westfield College, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph. D. by Philippa Susan Little June 1990. The thesis explores the poetry (and some prose) of Plath, Sexton, Atwood and Rich in terms of the changing constructions of self-image predicated upon the female role between approx. 1950-1980.1 am particularly concerned with the question of how the discourses of femininity and feminism contribute to the scope of the images of the self which are presented. The period was chosen because it involved significant upheaval and change in terms of women's role and gender identity. The four poets' work spans this period of change and appears to some extent generally characteristic of its social, political and cultural contexts in America, Britain and Canada.

    58 BLAKE MORRISON IN THE CONTEMPORARY THEATRICAL SCENE Valter Henrique de Castro Fritsch Universidade Federal do Rio Grande ABSTRACT: This article discusses issues related to the various aesthetics that compose contemporary British dramaturgy. I point to features that divide the way theatre is viewed today in at least two aesthetic strands - one allied with more traditional patterns of writing for the theatre that derives from the Aristotelian model, and another that aims to cause a break with dramatic action, characters and all that constitutes the most classic view of dramatic text. This article also aims to place the poet and playwright Blake Morrison in the panorama of contemporary British theatre and show how the author fits into the many varying aspects of contemporary dramaturgy. KEYWORDS: Contemporary British Theatre; Blake Morrison; Imagery Studies; Contemporary Dramaturgy RESUMO: O presente artigo discute questões relacionadas às diferentes estéticas que compõe a dramaturgia contemporânea britânica. Aponto características que dividem a forma como o teatro é encarado hoje em pelo menos duas vertentes estéticas – uma aliada a padrões mais tradicionais da escrita para o teatro que deriva do modelo Aristotélico e outra que visa causar uma ruptura com a ação dramática, personagens e tudo que constitui a visão mais clássica de texto dramático. His novels, Jill and A Girl in Winter, and his first volume of poetry, The North Ship, have received very little critical attention. Larkin's last two volumes of poetry, The Less Deceived and The Whitsun Weddings, have been considered as two very similar works with little or no relation to his earlier work. This thesis is an attempt to demonstrate that there is a very clear line of development running through Larkin's work, in which the novels play as important a part as the poetry.

ABSTRACT Todd Swift, 2011, ‗The Forties: A Doctorate in Creative and Critical Writing‘ This work is in two parts: a portfolio of creative writing (poetry), preceded by a critical thesis. In the critical aspect of my dissertation I contest a dominant account of poetic creation and influence in the period 1938–1954, and consider a third line of influence that arose in post-war British poetry. The methodology follows in the footsteps of Other Traditions by John Ashbery: literary criticism by a practitioner. My critical writing complements my poetry collection, whose various styles and registers relate to the poetic influences discussed. My first three chapters develop the argument as follows: Chapter One considers ideas of ‗style‘ and ‗poetic style‘. Chapter Two narrows in on the idea of ‗period style‘ in poetry and turns more specifically into a discussion of the Forties Style in Poetry. Chapter Three looks directly at the period under question, the Forties, and its key poet, Dylan Thomas, as read by critics. Chapter Four discusses F.T. Prince, a major poet much overlooked.
