Created in 1990 by Tim Berners- Lee, the web quickly became the most used hypertext system in the world, and most browsers default to indicating hyperlinks with an underline. To answer the question of why the underline was chosen over competing demarcation techniques, the thesis applies the methods of history of technology and sociology of technology. Before the invention of the web, the underline–also known as the vinculum–was used in many contexts in writing systems; collecting entities together to form a whole and ascribing additional meaning to the content. -

Systems, Networks, and Webs: History and Theory of Infrastructure
SI 541/741 Prof. Paul N. Edwards University of Michigan, Winter 2008 Monday, 1-4 PM, 311 West Hall Systems, Networks, and Webs: History and Theory of Infrastructure This course offers historical, comparative, and theoretical perspectives on the evolution of major infrastructures from the 19th century to the present. We will focus especially on information infrastructures: the Internet, the World Wide Web, and scientific cyberinfrastructures. To set the stage, we will compare their historical trajectories with those of older transportation, electric power, and communication infrastructures. For example, transportation infrastructures face their most difficult challenges at the interface between different transport modes, as in ports (where shipping connects with trucking and rail) and airports (where air transit connects with automobile, truck, bus, subway, train, and pedestrian modes). These intermodal problems in transport networks find significant parallels in information infrastructures. For example, data conversion (from analog to digital, or from one digital format to another) creates difficult problems for system designers and users; connecting networks built on different standards motivated early Internet research. The course looks at how infrastructures form, how they change, and how they shape (and are shaped by) social systems. A major focus will be the role of standards (e.g. railroad track gauge, alternating current voltages, TCP/IP, HTTP, HTML) and standard-setting bodies in creating “ground rules” for infrastructure development. Concepts such as “technological momentum” (the tendency of large technical systems to become increasingly resistant to change), “load factor” (maximizing the use of available system capacity), and "interdependence" (among components and between connected infrastructures) will be explored. -

Today all digital comput- Aers are, in essence, “Turing machines.” The British mathematician also pioneered the field of artificial intelligence, or AI, proposing the famous and widely debated Turing test as a way of determin- ing whether a suitably programmed computer can think. During World War II, Turing was instrumental in breaking the German Enigma code in part of a top-secret British operation that historians say short- ened the war in Europe by two years. When he died Alan Turing's at the age of 41, Turing was doing the earliest work on what would now be called artificial life, simulat- ing the chemistry of biological growth. Throughout his remarkable career, Turing had no great interest in publicizing his ideas. Consequently, Forgotten important aspects of his work have been neglected or forgotten over the years. In particular, few people— even those knowledgeable about computer science— are familiar with Turing’s fascinating anticipation of connectionism, or neuronlike computing. The resources of the WWW are transferred via the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and may be accessed by users by a software application called a web browser and are published by a software application called a web server. English scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. He wrote the first web browser in 1990 while employed at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. The browser was released outside CERN in 1991, first to other research institutions starting in January 1991 and then to the general public in August 1991. The World Wide Web has been central to the development of the Information Age and is the primary tool billions of people use to interact on the Internet. Web resources may be any type of downloaded media, but web pages are hypertext media that have been formatted in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Such formatting allows for embedded hyperlinks that contain URLs and permit users to navigate to other web resources. Novelists, at these moments, have found it necessary to define what differentiates the novel from other media and what makes the novel a viable form of art and communication in the age of images. At the same time, writers have expanded the novel form by borrowing conventions from these newer media. I describe this process of differentiation and interaction between the novel and other media as a “media assemblage” and argue that our understanding of the development of the novel in the twentieth century is incomplete if we isolate literature from the other media forms that compete with and influence it. The concept of an assemblage describes a historical situation in which two or more autonomous fields interact and influence one another. On the one hand, an assemblage is composed of physical objects such as TV sets, film cameras, personal computers, and publishing companies, while, on the other hand, it contains enunciations about those objects such as claims about the artistic merit of television, beliefs about the typical audience of a Hollywood blockbuster, or academic discussions about canonicity. -

New Atheism and Secularism
HYBRIS nr 42 (2018) ISSN: 1689-4286 TOMASZ SIECZKOWSKI UNIWERSYTET ŁÓDZKI NEW ATHEISM AND SECULARISM 1 Introduction The antagonism between the sacred and the secular is nothing new. For many centuries the competition between the church and the state was driven by the ultimate goal of winning the basic loyalty of the governed i.e. the flock. In the 1960’s and 1970’s it seemed that the conflict was resolved and secular ways of political practices took over for good. Since its beginning in the aftermath of 1648 Westphalia peace treaty secularism most often has been realized by political means even when passed off as a massive communal movement as it happened in the Leninist and Stalinist Soviet Union. In the Western states in turn secularism was well established governmental policy, with religions privatized and out of scope of both academia and politic transformations. And it would probably stay this way for some time longer if it hadn’t been for terrorist attacks in New York (2001), Madrid (2004) and London (2005). Those raised new and public reflections on the nature of institutionalized religions as well as created opportunities for renown authors to wage a war which a couple of years before seemed to had been won and forgotten. Most often the beginning of the so called new atheism1 is attributed to the notorious Sam Harris’ book The End of Reason (2004) written in the aftermath of 11/09 attacks. Soon after a plethora of interesting and massively influential books were published, Richard Dawkins’ God Delusion (2006), Daniel Dennett’s Breaking the Spell.
