Blige didn't graduate high school. While speaking with The Washington Post, Mary J. Blige said as a child, she 'didn't care about getting an education,' and she ultimately dropped out of school in the 11th grade, according to CBS . Reading at only an eighth-grade level meant she ran into many issues throughout her career. 'It hurts a lot when you cannot really comprehend what a person is saying in a meeting or you don't even understand what you're reading in your contract,' she said. In 2011, she decided to make her education a priority by obtaining her GED. 'What I came to understand about education is that it is the key to life,' she said. There were also rumors that she was headed off to Howard University, and that rumor allegedly came straight from Blige herself. You have to sing for your life,' she said. She went on to record her sophomore album, My Life , which she described as her 'call for help.' She told the publication: 'I didn't think anybody would pay attention to my call for help, but my fanbase did.' The winning formula for her album proved to be the 'depression and all this oppression' she was dealing with in her real life, and when she fueled that gut wrenching pain into her lyrics, she became a musical force to be reckoned with. Drug and alcohol use was how Mary J. Blige coped. After facing so many devastating life events, Mary J. Blige turned to drugs. In a 2013 interview with Los Angeles Confidential (via USA Today ), the 'Not Gon' Cry' singer opened up about her past addictions — which she later revealed as cocaine use — by saying, 'So many dark moments —which all added up and that's what sprung on the drug addiction, trying to numb it all with the drugs.' Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. We all work, we all have different visions now and different jobs, but the passion should be the same. Is hard to stay in touch now with some bands, is even harder to check the internet for new albums and new bands, but when i have some free time i come back to my first love: this music. 11 years and i am still playing with this fanzine, and i am doing it for me in the first place and for those 5 people close to me, but always with a smile on my face when i am doing it.     Genesis: Get ‘Em Out By Friday The Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction Depending on where one looks for the information, the original release dates of Genesis singles and albums are often misreported. This article uses several sources, including music paper cuttings, websites and books, to try and determine the most likely release date in the UK for their officially released product issued between 1968 and 1978. For a detailed analysis to be completed beyond 1978 will require the input of others that know that era far better than I with the resources to examine it in appropriate levels of detail. My own collection of source material essentially runs dry after 1978. As most people searching for release dates are likely to go to Wikipedia that is where this search for the truth behind Genesis’ back catalogie. The dates claimed on Wikipedia would themselves have come from a number of sources referenced by contributors over the years but what these references lack is the evidence to back up their claims. This article aims to either confirm or disprove these dates with the added bonus of citing where this information stems from. It’s not without a fair share of assumptions and educated deductions but it offers more on this subject than any previously published piece.
