It argues that women’s work in imperial China took on different meanings as ecological settings, economic resources, and social class shifted. The very commodity—tea—that these women produced also shaped portrayals of their labor, turning them into romantic objects and targets of gossip. But women tea-pickers also appeared as good women with moral dignity, suggesting the fundamental importance of industry and diligence as female virtues in imperial China. n imperial China, “men plow and women weave” (nangeng nüzhi) stood I as a canonical gender division of labor. Under this model, a man’s work place was in the fields: he cultivated the land and tended the crops, grow- ing food; a woman labored at home, where she sat at her spindle and loom, making cloth. -

The Crisis of Classical Learning in Eighteenth Century China © Higher Education Press and Springer-Verlag 2011 Abstract The discourses of classical scholars during the eighteenth century reinforced a shift from Song-Ming rationalism to a more skeptical and secular classical empiricism. By making precise scholarship the source of acceptable knowledge, Qing classicists contended that the legitimate reach of ancient ideals should be reevaluated through comparative delineation of the textual sources from which all such knowledge derived. This turn to empirically based classical inquiry meant that abstract ideas and rational argumentation gave way as the primary objects of elite discussion to concrete facts, verifiable institutions, ancient natural studies, and historical events. In general, Qing classicists regarded Song and Ming “Learning of the Way” as an obstacle to verifiable truth because it discouraged further inquiry along empirical lines. The empirical approach to knowledge they advocated placed proof and verification at the heart of analysis of the classical tradition. During this time, scholars and critics also applied historical analysis to the official Classics. Classical commentary yielded to textual criticism and a “search for evidence” to refortify the ancient canon. Representing a late imperial movement in Confucian letters, Qing classicists still sought to restore the classical vision. -

The Tower of Going Astray: The Paradox of Liu Yazi’s Lyric Classicism† Zhiyi Yang Prologue † I thank Tze-ki Hon (SUNY), Michel The Tower of Going Astray, or Milou, is an erstwhile wine house in the Hockx (SOAS), Kang-I Sun Chang (Yale), picturesque water town of Zhouzhuang (Jiangsu province). Standing by Martin Kern (Princeton), Michael Lack- ner (Erlangen), Shengqing Wu (HKUST), a whispering stream lined with willow trees, it once served traders and and especially Jon von Kowallis (New sailors from the region who loaded silk and rice onto bamboo-mat-roofed South Wales), as well as the two anony- mous readers (one of whom identified boats to sail across China and beyond. Now a tourist attraction, the house herself to me as Xiaofei Tian) for their commemorates a few poets who in late December 1920 met there on help and suggestions. several occasions to drink and write poetry. They called it Milou, referring to a legendary labyrinth of desire built for Sui Yangdi (569–618), a poet- emperor who would lose his empire after less than fifteen years of rule; a Western student of Chinese poetry might recognize this reference to Milou thanks to Stephen Owen’s eponymous book (1989), which elaborates on the seductive power of poetry. These poets were local members of the Southern Society (Nanshe, active 1909–1923), a classical-style poetry association with deep ties to the Nationalist Party, and they had gathered to welcome their retired chairman, Liu Yazi (1887–1958), who hailed from nearby Wujiang County. It was a difficult time for the Society. -
