Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

656 chapter sixteen this way the scholar-ofcials were completely deprived of their option to keep themselves detached from the regime. Te cultural control in the Song dynasty may be considered as rather tight, but at least on the surface, the personal dignity of the scholar-ofcials was still respected, so they were able to pursue, more or less, their ideal that the search for the “Way” was their ultimate purpose in life, whereas the Ming regime, from the very beginning of its establishment, tried to cast the personality of men of letters in a slavish mould. During the Ming dynasty, the Cheng-Zhu Lixue was honored, forc- ibly, as a government-sponsored theory, and their annotated editions of Confucian classics were held as the required texts for daily learning and as the basis of the civil service examinations. From the beginning of the Ming to the Chenghua reign, the standard format in the civil service examinations gradually took shape. Te eight-legged prose, with fxed number of characters in length and the requirement that one could only “compose in the voice of the ancients” rather than freely assume one’s own, further reinforced the shackles on the thinking of the literati with a lasting infuence. (See “Survey of Ofcial Appoint- ment” in History of the Ming) Tereupon the free and lively literary practice, introduced in the last years of the Yuan, came to a sudden stop at the beginning of the Ming. Te more than a hundred years aferward (1368–1487), through the last years of the Chenghua reign, made a rather lengthy period of decline in the history of literature. -

In order to answer the following three questions “ whether the current tea culture phenomena can be called “tradition” or not; what are the changes in tea cultural tradition and what are the new features of the current trend of tea culture; what are the endogenous and exogenous factors which influenced the change in the tea drinking tradition”, I did literature research from ancient tea classics and historical documents to summarize the development history of Chinese tea culture, and used two month to do fieldwork on teahouses in Xi’an so that I could have a clear understanding on the current trend of tea culture. It is found that the current tea culture is inherited from tradition and changed with social development. Tea drinking traditions have become more and more popular with diverse forms. -

Jill's family, Billy's family, and Tanya's family each had just two or three boxes of tea on a shelf, but Julie's had a whole cabinet dedicated to tea. No bags in boxes either; her parents drank loose-leaf tea only. "The real stuff," her dad called it. Packed tightly in rich red and gold tins, the Tang's collection included fragrant jasmine green tea; Longjing tea, a pan-fried green tea Julie preferred to call by its nickname, Dragon Well tea; roasted, curly-leaved oolong tea; lightly sweet white tea; and more. Every New Year-the Chinese New Year that is-her parents would have a traditional tea ceremony. That's the time when she would roll her eyes and slink out of the room. Her mom said it was an important cultural tradition, but Julie just thought it was B-O-R-I-N-G. (Or at least she assumed it would be if she ever stuck around for it.) However, now that she was 13 (an official teenager at last!), Julie felt different, more mature, and she was beginning to really enjoy history, thanks to her great social studies teacher. Julie decided it was time this New Year to take an interest in her own family and cultural history once she realized she actually knew very little. (She had only been to China once when she visited her grandparents as a five-year-old and her classes devoted equal time to studies of all the cultures of the world, not just that of the Chinese.) "Why do we have to do this tea ceremony every year?" Julie asked her mother, who was taking the clay teapots out of the cabinet reserved for special teapots and fancy dishes. -

The manuscript has been determined to be a school boy’s hand copy, complete with errors, and it reproduces not only the text (which appears in large characters), but also an early commentary (small, double-column characters). -
Notes on the History of Tea
Notes on the History of Tea It is surprising how incomplete our knowledge is. We are all aware that we import coffee from tropical America. But where do we obtain our tea? What is tea? From what plant does it come? How long have we been drinking it? All these questions passed through my mind as I read the manuscript of the pre- ceding article. To answer some of my questions, and yours, I gathered together the following notes. The tea of commerce consists of the more or less fermented, rolled and dried immature leaves of Camellia sinensis. There are two botanical varieties of the tea plant. One, var. sinensis, the original chinese tea, is a shrub up to 20 feet tall, native in southern and western Yunnan, spread by cultivation through- out southern and central China, and introduced by cultivation throughout the warm temperate regions of the world. The other, var. assamica, the Assam tea, is a forest tree, 60 feet or more tall, native in the area between Assam and southern China. Var. sinensis is apparently about as hardy as Camellia japonica (the common Camellia). The flowers are white, nodding, fra- grant, and produced variously from June to January, but usually in October. The name is derived from the chinese Te. An alter- nate chinese name seems to be cha, which passed into Hindi and Arabic as chha, anglicized at an early date as Chaw. The United States consumes about 115 million pounds of tea annually. The major tea exporting countries are India, Ceylon, Japan, Indonesia, and the countries of eastern Africa.
